CR South Wrestling Advances to State Quarterfinals

Council Rock South advanced to the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class AAA Team Championships at Hershey with a win over Cathedral Prep on Thursday.

PIAA (AAA) TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS FIRST ROUND ACTION

FROM THE GIANT CENTER IN HERSHEY, PENNSYLVANIA

District One was well represented in Round One of the PIAA (AAA) Team Championships as Boyertown got things started with a thumping of Clearfield, from across the state to Hershey, PA, in the Giant Center.  The Boyertown Bears were dominant from the start and pinned their way to a 61-12 victory in the top half of the bracket.  Boyertown will face Canon McMillan in quarterfinal action Friday at 12:00pm.  Canon Mac downed Jersey Shore 46-21 in early action.

Council Rock South stepped onto the same mat at 8 pm to battle with Cathedral Prep, the District 10 Champions.  The Golden Hawks started off strong at 120 pounds with Ben Radner’s 8-2 victory over Prep’s Andrew Stark, as the Golden Hawks grabbed the lead early with two decisions and a fall from Zack Trampe at 132 lbs with a flying cement job to take a 12-0 lead.  Cary Palmer needed a takedown in overtime against Brandon Sauers for a sudden victory 5-3 at 126.  Brother Riley Palmer was an 8-3 winner over Ta ‘Naz Gregory at 138 to make it four in a row for South.  South seemed methodical winning four straight, but Prep kept the bonus points to a minimum with the exception of returning state runner-up Zack Trampe tallying six points with his pin fall.

At 145 pounds, CR South’s Lucas Martoccio was the better man in overtime, as he used his length to snag a leg and pinwheel it for the takedown to snatch a sudden victory 4-2 win over the Rambler’s Carter Starocci.  Martoccio’s win extended the Golden Hawks lead to 18-0 as the Hawks kept the winning streak going.  They remained perfect and extended their lead as Nick Verdi posted some bonus points with his uneventful 11-2 major decision over the Preps Albert Taylor at 152.  Dylan Schwartz used his power to turn Rambler Alejandro Linan to his back with a half-n-bar combo and flatten him in 2:50.  The Golden Hawks secured half of the fourteen contested bouts to start the match with a lucky seven straight wins, pushing their lead to 28-0.  The train took a stop at 170 for the Golden Hawks and only lasted 30 seconds as Luigi Yates derailed the Hawks’ Tyler Gettman for a quick stop fall.

After South dropped another one at 182, the Hawks’ Joe Doyle sealed the team victory at 195 pounds using a sweet headlock from the bottom, and stepped in for double grapevines in 4:33 to record the fall.  Although the Ramblers had a chance to tie things up with four straight falls, which seemed highly unlikely, there was still some lingering doubt of the outcome of the dual.  They sparked some hope in the slim chance with a pin fall at 220, but John Anderson ended the intrigue for the Golden Hawks as he wrestled at heavyweight (285) to a 4-1 loss to the Rambler’s Kawaun Deboe, making the team score 34-19.

From there it was onto the quarterfinals for the Golden Hawks, who will face Belle Vernon, the District 7 Champions, 57-17 winners over Exeter Twp, at 2 pm Friday afternoon.
