CR South/Pennridge Set to Battle in Consolation Semis

Pennridge and Council Rock South will wrestle for the final spot in states. To view photos of Friday's district duals, check the Photo Gallery later this weekend.

DISTRICT DUAL FINALS

Electric atmosphere at Upper Dublin H.S. for the quarterfinals of the D1 Duals, packed stands, press row full, and plenty of District One brass on hand set the stage for some exciting wrestling.

Starting at 120 pounds for the first bouts on four mats, the SOL National Conference Council Rock South Golden Hawks got out to a good start over Garnet Valley.   Zack Trampe defeated GV’s Matt Marino 4-3, but brother Mike Marino got the points right back with a huge 6-4 win over Dan Martoccio at 126 with a headlock in the second period.  Marino came off the bottom with an escape and immediately attacked, securing the headlock for essentially a 6-point move and enough to secure the win as he hung on in the third period with Martoccio on the attack.

In other action for the SOL Continental representative, Pennridge, the Rams Scott Parker took care of business with a fall for an early 6-0 lead over the PAC 10’s Spring-Ford Rams.  Ben Ross followed up with a decision in a furious battle for six minutes with plenty of action.  Ross was working for a fall in the second when the official stopped the match for blood time.  Ross defeated Spring-Ford’s Matt Kreible 7-1 for a much needed victory in a match-up of strength for both teams.

Quakertown, the other Continental rep from the SOL, was taking on powerful Boyertown.  The Panthers quickly fell behind in this one as the Boyertown Bears jumped out to an almost insurmountable lead 24-0 lead after Garret Mauger’s fall at 120-pounds over the Q-town’s Brandon Rosenberger.

Back to the CRS/GV match, after Dylan Schwartz added points at 138 for the Golden Hawks, Lucas Martoccio notched a huge win over a tough Pat Rowe 7-6 to extend the South lead to 13-3.  Prior at 132, CRS posted big points as Harry Murray posted a major decision over a very tough Ben Tuohey 16-8.

Meanwhile, Pennridge’s Kyle Gentile recorded a fall at 160 to get the green Rams back in the match 16-15 after Spring-Ford rattled off several wins.  S-F managed to get four wins in a row with the heart of their line-up, but Pennridge minimized the damage by not allowing a lot of bonus points.

Boyertown continued their dominance on Mat 1 with a punishing of the Panthers,  posting a 52-3 lead coming around to 106.  Even with Quakertown’s best wrestler on the mat, the Bears managed to steal a win in overtime as Jakob Campbell snatched a takedown at the edge of the mat to beat Collyn Dorney.  Final score Boyertown 55-Quakertown 6.  On Mat 4, Pennridge suffered a tough loss at 220 as Ezra Outlaw gave up a late takedown in the third period with the score 1-1.

A real dual meet score was on the board at 220 mark of the CRS/GV match on Mat 3, 20-18 in favor of Garnet Valley after the Golden Hawks Ben Kenis posted a 8-0 major over JC Zweier at 195.  Back to Mat 4, Pennridge could not catch the blue Rams after the Outlaw lost and Joe Kracz loss at heavy to (S-F) Josh Boyer 3-1 and they dropped to the wrestle-backs to face another green monster in Methacton.  Final score Spring-Ford 40–Pennridge 18.

Swing back to the corner on Mat 3 and CRS is holding the lead as they come around to the light-weights, and after Riley Palmer’s major decision putting South up 27-21 basically securing the meet unless a penalty point was assessed even with a fall by GV.  And a fall the Jaquars got at 113, but it wasn't enough as the first criteria of most bouts won decided it, 8-6 in favor of CR South and the 28-27 win to advance to the Semis to take on #1 seed Boyertown.

So next round looks like this Boyertown vs. CRS and Spring-Ford vs. Downingtown East in the semis.  Downingtown East downed Methacton 36-17.  Consolation matches Pennridge vs. Methacton and Quakertown vs. Garnet Valley.

DISTRICT DUAL SEMI-FINALS & 1ST ROUND WRESTLEBACKS

Pennridge got off to a strong start with three straight wins against Methacton in the wrestleback round at Upper Dublin.  Ben Ross started things off with a major decision, followed by Ethan Clemmer’s fall after trailing in his match at 132.  Matt Gerhart notched a decision and the battle was on.  With the score 17-12, the Rams Kyle Gentile bumped up to 170 and ran a series of arm bars to tech fall his counterpart and put the Rams ahead by double digits, 22-12.  The Rams had to forfeit at 195 after suffering a three-point loss to bring the Indians within one at 22-21.  In these duals, there is a lot of shuffling around in team’s regular line-ups as coaches engage in high stakes chess matches.

The Ridge’s Ezraw Outlaw hung on for a 1-0 decision at 220 to push Pennridge further ahead, 25-21.  The match tightened up when Tracy Green stepped on the mat with Joe Kracz.  Kracz went toe to toe with Green trailing 4-1 into the third, but Green was just to strong for the Indians as he won 8-1 as the two teams traded victories (25-24).  With the Rams stellar lightweights on deck, the outcome of the match was in their hands.  Matt Parker grabbed control with a pin using arm bars to finish at 106.  Kordell Rush won his 113 bout by decision, and with the match out of reach for Methacton, the Warriors forfeited to the Rams Scott Parker, making the final tally 40-24.

CR South jumped out early on Boyertown 9-6 at 126 pounds with Dan Martoccio’s  decision 2-0 over Boyertown’s Lucas Miller, in a battle of two of D1’s best.  Harry Murray followed with a 5-1 decision at 132, and Dylan Schwartz grabbed a 4-2 win over Dylan Wertz.  But the Bears roared back with a fall and a decision to go ahead 15-9 after an injury default suffered by South.  With the Boyertown upper weights doing the job for the Bears upping their lead to 38-14, the little guys came out to do battle in this Roman-like event.  The atmosphere in the gym was hostile and volatile just like in the Coliseum.

Riley Palmer nipped the Bears Jakob Campbell 3-1 with a late takedown in the third after surrendering a point after Campbell got a choice after Palmer’s second injury timeout.  The takedown came after a solid shot by Campbell, but Palmer positioned himself well to counter and secured the single leg takedown by wrapping up both ankles.  At 113, Nick Palmer kept it going with an 8-2 victory with a flurry of takedowns over David Campbell, thus winning the family feud, and bringing the team score to 38-20.  Boyertown’s Garret Mauger (120) defeated Zack Trampe 9-2 to finish off the Golden Hawks 41-20.

Quakertown could never get on track versus Garnet Valley in the other consolation bout, as the Jaguars outran the Panthers early 32-3 after eight contested bouts.  Only Lucas Garges moving up to 160 pounds could slow the Jags as he posted a 5-1 decision.  Garnet Valley seemed to want this one more after losing narrowly to CR South earlier in the evening, and the Jaguars showed it with a convincing win, 41-16.  Collyn Dorney (106) and Harrison Campbell (113) notched a pair of wins on the back end of this one for the Panthers.

So Quakertown is out, while #6 Pennridge will battle #5 CR South in the Consolation Semifinals, for a spot to move on to the State Duals, tomorrow at 1PM.  The Finals will match #1 Boyertown with #3 Spring-Ford.
