Tyler Dougherty – St. Joseph’s University (Track)
Major: Health Sciences
Final list of colleges: St. Joe’s, Bucknell, Monmouth
Reasons for choosing St. Joe’s: “The campus, the location and the student lifestyle. I liked that it was part of the city but not in the city, and I like that it’s a Catholic school.”
When did the idea of competing in track at the college level become a reality? “Probably about my sophomore year when some of the seniors were getting money.”
What was the recruiting process like? “It started when I entered high school, and it was just fun the whole time. It was never really stressful.”
How exciting is it to realize your goal of receiving a track scholarship? “It’s probably some of the best news I have had. It’s exciting.”
Coach Michael Cox says: “He was a key part of our 4x100 (relay) that won the state championship this year. He was critical to our success there. He really showed a lot of improvement throughout the last three years but especially this past year in dropping his individual times in the 100 and 200. He really made significant progress, and that helped him secure that Division One spot.
“He was a great leader. He’s one of our captains, and he really showed great leadership this past year.”
