Football Fever: Week 4

By Scott Huff

The awful weather last week led to some unpleasant outcomes on the offensive side of the line of scrimmage for Suburban One League football teams.

The unrelenting precipitation led to numerous turnovers – whether you were playing on the pristine surface at Souderton Area High School or the quagmire at Upper Merion High School.

Turf or mud – it was a mess.

Suburban One League teams will have their final audition for the conference schedule this week. This is the final week of ‘preseason’ football – where unlike the NFL – the games count toward playoff aspirations.

CB West (1-1) experienced the thrill of victory last week with an 8-7 nonleague win over William Tennent (0-2). It was the first win for new head coach Brian Hensel.

“To win this game meant a lot to us,” said Hensel who saw his Bucks lose 58-18 to Bethlehem Freedom in his coaching debut. “We came into this game focused on ourselves – to see what we could do better.

“Our kicking game hurt us the first week of the season,” added Hensel. “We wanted to tighten the screws a little, and we wanted to improve our kicking game.”

Buck punter Andrew Van Eeckelen had a huge part in helping West gain the victory. The change in field position paid considerable dividends for West.

The Bucks trailed 7-0 going into the fourth period, but junior running back Joe DiStefano scored on a one-yard run. The extra point, however, failed, and West still trailed, 7-6.

Van Eeckelen pinned Tennent back on the one-yard line with a gorgeous punt. And that great field position resulted in the game-winning points for the Bucks as the snap from center by the Panthers went through the end zone for a game-winning two-point safety.

“We really came into the game with a simple game plan,” said Hensel. “We wanted to show ball control and execute our running game.”

West out gained Tennent 230 yards to 100 yards of total offense.

Central Bucks West will attempt to extend its winning streak against Wissahickon this week.

“I told the players not to be fooled by that 45-0 score,” said Hensel in reference to the Trojans’ loss last week to Pottsgrove. “Pottsgrove is a team that is going to go deep into the AAA playoffs. Wissahickon is a talented team that won’t shy away from anyone.”

Upper Dublin (0-2) did not lose its second game of the season last year until November 7 when the Flying Cardinals were defeated in the PIAA District One Quad-A playoffs by Conestoga.

This season the Cardinals suffered their second loss of the season in a 34-0 loss to Upper Perkiomen (2-0). UD has been outscored by opponents 55-14 so far this year.

“These kids are definitely not used to losing,” said Upper Dublin coach Bret Stover. “Losing was accepted here in the past, but no one is happy with losing.

“Winning won’t come easy,” added Stover. “We have some young kids who are going to make mistakes. We have to learn how to execute and make some plays.”

Sophomore quarterback Andrew Derr continues to show improvement on the offensive side of the ball, while defensive tackle Frank Yurick and defensive end Anthony Williams have also played well.

“We have given up some points on defense, but we have given teams a short field with turnovers,” said Stover. “Andrew has made some nice throws, but we are going to have to do a better job of catching the football.”

Upper Dublin will attempt to get its first win of the season when they travel to Truman (0-2) to meet the Tigers on Thursday.

“Truman is bigger and more physical than us,” said Stover. “It is a short week, and with them playing a new offense, it will be a tough week for us to prepare.”

Abington (2-0) has a rare bye this week.

“We were supposed to play Northeast this week,” said Abington head coach Tim Sorber. “But they got a new coach, and they dropped us from their schedule.

“When we found out about it last spring, there was nobody left that we could schedule on this date,” added Sorber. “We will just have to deal with it.”

Both Central Bucks East and Plymouth Whitemarsh have had to deal with the high octane Ghost offense so far this season. Abington blasted the Patriots 31-7 and whitewashed the Colonials 38-0. The math gives the Ghosts a 69-7 scoring advantage this season.

Senior quarterback Sam Kind and junior running back Julien Ireland have lived up to preseason expectations. Against PW, Kind threw scoring passes to Anthony Hensley and Ireland, while Ireland also scored on a pair of runs. Hensley returned a punt 55 yards for a score.

“We really need some time to get game experience for both our offensive and defensive lines,” said Sorber. “The Northeast game would have helped with that, but there is really nothing that we could do about that.

“We can take the extra week and prepare for Neshaminy,” added Sorber as the Ghosts open the SOL National Conference with the defending league champions. “We can focus on that game alone and hopefully that will get us ready.”
Neshaminy (2-0) received a strong test from Hatboro-Horsham (1-1) and held off the Hatters, 13-6. A key defensive play was turned in by Kryan Kervick who returned an interception 17 yards for a TD. Bryan Dean ran for 100 yards on 28 carries and Charlie Marterella threw a TD pass to Ricky Williams.
