Girls' Swimming District 1 Results (2-27-15)

North Penn won its third consecutive District One Class AAA girls swimming title on Friday at La Salle University’s Kirk Pool.

The Maidens scored 306 points over the two-day meet.

Kailyn Evans was third in the 100 freeestyle, Olivia DiStefano was third in the 100 backstroke (57.45) and Megan Zartman was fourth (57.77) for North Penn.

The Maidens team of Aimee Baur, DiStefano, Erin O’Neill and Evans were second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:27.93).

“The 400 free relay didn’t come out on top but that was our best time this year so I’m really happy with that,” DiStefano said. “Our team record is 3:25 so we’re hoping to get that at states. That’s always on my mind.”

Pennridge had its best-ever district meet, taking second in team scoring (190).

The Rams’ Hannah Zurmuhl, Anna Beno, Brittany Weiss and Morgan Scott won the 400 freestyle relay in a meet record time of 3:25.59, breaking the previous mark of 3:28.99 set in 2014 by North Penn.

“That was very exciting,” Pennridge coach Ryan Griffiths said.

Morgan Scott capped off her district meet with her second win in as many days. The freshman won the 100 freestyle in 50.31, complementing her win in the 200 freestyle on Thursday.

“Our girls are stepping up and we’re telling everyone that Pennridge is here and we’re one of the top teams in the district,” Scott said.

Right behind her was teammate Hannah Zurmuhl, who came from the seventh seed to capture the silver medal (51.15).

Brittany Weiss finished third in the 100 breaststroke for the Rams (1:04.92).

North Penn’s Kailyn Evans was third in the 100 freestyle (51.48).

Haley Sutton of Hatboro-Horsham was second in the 100 backstroke (57.13).

Upper Dublin’s Jenna Johns finished fourth in the 100 freestyle (51.90).

Hannah Wittman of Central Bucks East was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.93).  The Patriots finished 10th in team scoring (94 points).

“Overall I’m happy,” Wittman said. “I was hoping to place in the top three or four so I’d be safe as far as getting to states and I did that in the breaststroke.

“I have some things I need to clean up but I’m definitely excited to be going back to states and hopefully improving my time.”

The top five finishers in Class AAA and the winner in ClassAA receive automatic berths at the PIAA competition, slated for March 11-14 at Bucknell University. Other swimmers may get state bids based on statewide time comparisons.
