Upper Merion senior attackman Nate Hare has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at Robert Morris University.
Hare scored 58 goals last year, helping the Vikings finish 14-4 and qualify for the District 1 playoffs in just their second year as a varsity team. Hare was a Suburban One American Conference first-team and All-Phillylacrosse.com Honorable Mention pick.
Hare, who made the Fab Forty team at the Philly Lacrosse Showcase in November, plays club lacrosse for the Duke’s LC.
Robert Morris is one of the most improved programs in Division I men’s lacrosse in recent years. The Colonials went from 4-11 in 2008 to 9-7 last year. Robert Morris started off 5-0 in 2010 and cracked the USILA Top 20 at No. 19 this week; thought the squad fell to Mount St. Mary’s on Tuesday.
“I went out there at the end of the summer and met the coaches and again when they played Ohio State last week,” said Hare. “The coaching staff is great. They have a love for the game and they love teaching.
“The players were cool and they have a real desire to win.”
Hare, who is on the Distinguished Honor Roll this year, plans to major in Business Management or Marketing.
“They have a great business school and I love the city of Pittsburgh,” he said. “The campus has about 5,000 students, which is exactly the size I wanted.”
Hare, who has 96 career goals heading into the season, is optimistic the Vikings will again challenge in the Suburban One American.
“I know that our league has real tough competition with Wissahickon, Upper Dublin and Plymouth Whitemarsh,” he said. “All four of these teams are right there in contention for the league title and really whoever comes out and plays the hardest is going to get it.
“We graduated some seniors, but we have some young guys ready to come up and fill spots and our junior goalie (Conor Crowe) is really strong.”
