One of the biggest transitions from high school to college swimming is the extended distances contested at the college level.

Some SOL swimmers got a taste of the longer events at the Central Bucks South Distance Meet, an annual event hosted by the Titans over the holiday break.

For the girls, Quinn MacMillan of Central Bucks West won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:08.52.

“It’s a pretty big event and I’m usually a sprinter so this is an unusual event for me,” MacMillan said. “I tried it last year but I wasn’t really into it. This year I was.

“I’m happy with my time. I think I could have gone faster but I think I dropped about 40 seconds off my time from last year so I’ll take it.

“These are the kinds of events that you see in college and this is a great opportunity to try them out.”

Central Bucks East made a good showing at the meet, as Jess Jozefiak won the 200 butterfly (2:19.23), Ellie O’Brien won the 200 breaststroke (2:31.27) and Hannah Wittman won the 400 individual medley (4:37.63).

“I’m really happy with my swim,” said O’Brien, who broke her own meet record. “I didn’t expect my time to be that fast.”

Wittman, O’Brien, Nicole Guss and Jozefiak won the 400 medley relay (4:13.64) and Louise Huuki, O’Brien, Jozefiak and Wittman won the 800 freestyle relay (8:18.79).

Caitlin Connor won the 200 backstroke (2:20.15) for Central Bucks South.

For the boys, Hatboro-Horsham’s Michael Thomas won the 200 backstroke (1:56.02) and 400 individual medley (4:17.78) and Kyle Finn won the 200 butterfly (2:06.33).

Finn is primarily a freestyler and is not particularly noted for the butterfly.

“This wasn’t an event I had my eye on,” he said. “It was just kind of thrown at me. I’ve never done it before so I just tried it out. It’s nice to do something different and see what you can do.

“I’ve always done free and this is the first time I’ve done any fly. They just noticed in practice that I was doing a 50 fly so I tired a 100 and then they threw me in this just to see what would happen.

“It’s nice to play around and not just keep getting sucked into the same two events.

“The longer distances are good preparation for the big races at the shorter distances that come in Feburary and March.”

Curtis Sumner, Pat Stasio, Thomas and Finn won the 800 freestyle relay (7:35.05).

Nick Radziul of CB South won the 1,000 freestyle (10:33.84).

Council Rock South’s Tim Harman won the 200 breaststroke (2:24.77).

“I just took the race out in a nice pace,” said Harman, a senior. “I saw where everyone was and tried to pick it up a little but then at the end I really tried to finish strong.

“It’s difficult because the distance is double what we would usually swim. You don’t know how to go into it so you just try to do your best.

“We’ve been to this meet before so I’ve done this before but it’s only once a year and every race is different so it’s not like I really have a lot of experience at this distance. That’s what makes this such a nice win for me.”

CB East won the 400-yard medley relay. Patrick Zalesky, Nick Dilemmo, Alex Butler, Andrew Zhugayevich clocked in at 3:54.82.
