North Penn defeated archrival Wilson 9-6 to capture the 2023 Pennsylvania Girls’ Water Polo State Championship.

The Knights led 6-3 only to watch Wilson rally to knot the score, but they broke a 6-6 tie with three unanswered goals. Emily Pironti scored the go-ahead goal, and Fiona Rowe added a pair of goals in the final minutes for the 9-6 final.

“The girls were coming in as the number one seed,” NP coach Jason Grubb said. “They had one loss on the year and that was to Wilson. They had a great state championship tournament as they were rolling through getting to the Wilson game.

“In the championship game, we were able to take the lead, hold onto the lead, and when Wilson was able to make a little bit of a run, we finished the fourth quarter very strong and took a three-goal lead at the end to cap off the win.”

Wilson, who captured the 2022 state title, had just three losses on the season – all three were to North Penn.

Pennridge defeated Governor Mifflin 12-8 in the third-place game.
