  • Saturday morning practice finished? Yep.
  • Temps in the mid-twenties? Brrr, yes.
  • Going home to decompress for the day? Not quite yet.

Last Saturday, some of the captains from Pennsbury Swim and Dive team loaded up their cars with bags of clothing donations from the team and headed over to CR South for the annual Clothing Drive Fundraiser. This annual event provides funds to ‘Lauren’s Angels’ a nonprofit for Lauren Shevchek, a former CRS swimmer. Funds are used so she may continue her active-based therapy program as part of her ongoing recovery from a spinal cord injury.

Why collect items for a clothing donation for a competitor?

“It’s important to find unity in a sport, not just for your own team, but for the whole conference. When a community comes together, they are stronger than when divided,” said Ashley Martillotti, one of PHS Swim & Dive captains.

“While we’re competitors on the pool deck, we’re all friends and support one another outside of the pool and it brings us together,” said Maggie Sweitzer, another PHS captain.

While the PHS team loves the competition amongst the area schools, the program has been developing its focus on community involvement and volunteering. Events like this one give the athletes an opportunity to be part of something much larger than themselves and in this case, their school.

During the month of January, PHS Swim and Dive will be collecting used towel donations (no rips or strings), dog and cat treats, food and supplies for local animal shelters and the Alpha Bravo Canine nonprofit. They hope to engage their fellow athletes across the conference to be a part of it.
