Ann Herman – Cornell University (Cross Country)

Major:  Undecided but leaning toward economics

Final list of schools:  Cornell, Williams, Middlebury, Lafayette

Reasons for choosing Cornell:  “When I went on my visit to Cornell, I just really enjoyed it. I went on an unofficial visit in the summer, and I met the coach, and he was really a big factor. He was such a nice guy, and he seemed to really care about the girls. I went on the official visit in the fall, and I met some of the girls on the team, and I really got a feel for the school. The area is beautiful, and all the girls were really nice, and I felt like they were people I could become friends with. Also, my cousin goes there, and he likes it.”

What was the progression that led you to running at the collegiate level?  “As a freshman, I thought I wanted to compete at the collegiate level, and by the time I was a junior, I realized I wouldn’t know what else to do with myself if I didn’t run. I was lucky in that it was an easy process. I made an early decision, so it was out of the way. It was stressful getting my applications in, and it was stressful during the summer having coaches contact me, but overall, I’m really happy with how it turned out.”

Coach Don Little says:  “Annie is one of the most outstanding people that I’ve had the opportunity to be involved with. From student to athlete to human being – from top to bottom, she is just a class act. She is very kind, sweet, honest and is always considerate and worried about the other girls on the team, trying to make it a better experience for them both as far as leading as a role model as a runner and also trying to create an atmosphere of welcoming them in.  We have girls that run all across the spectrum as far as time is concerned, and Annie makes a genuine effort to make them feel welcome on the team.

“Scholastically, she’s a top kid. She takes high level courses, she scored phenomenally on the SAT, and she’s been accepted into an excellent Ivy League school in Cornell, and I know she’s very happy about the school, the choice and running.”
