PIAA AAA Swimming & Diving Championship Results (3-12-14)

PIAA SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
Kinney Natatorium, Bucknell University

Ian Forlini of William Tennent capped a stellar career with the final piece in his already impressive resume. Forlini, the four-time Suburban One League NationalConference and District One Class AAA champion, captured the gold in diving on Wednesday’s opening day day of the PIAA Class AAA meet, held at BucknellUniversity’s Albert Kinney Natatorium.

He posted a score of 596.15, bettering the meet record o f581.45 set last year by Pine Richland’s Dominic Giordano.

“I was hoping I could do my dives well and then as I got closer and closer I was really trying to do them as well as I possibly could toclose it out,” he said. “I wanted to do each dive cleanly.”

Not to be outdone, Upper Dublin’s Christopher Devlin sawgold in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 1:39.22.

“It was beyond my wildest dreams,” Devlin said. “I didn’t even think about it. The 200 was wide open this year and I got lucky.”

Tommie Dillione of Council Rock North rounded out the gold medal haul for the SOL, taking first place in the 200 freestyle (1:49.44).

“It’s something I’ve dreamed about for a while and for it to actually happen is pretty crazy, especially in a race like that where it was soclose and so exciting,” she said.

Hannah McGee made her first trip to states a memorable one.

The Plymouth Whitemarsh freshman finished in a tie with Victoria Palochik of Nazareth for 16th place after the preliminaries of the 50 freestyle with their time of 24.37.

Because 16th place is the final spot in the consolation heat, the girls had to swim off for the right to compete in the evening race.

Palochik, also a freshman, came away with the victory, posting a 24.08 to McGee’s 24.47, but McGee was not disappointed.

“It was great to be here,” McGee said. “I didn’t see the swim off coming at all. I was a little nervous but I calmed myself down.

“This was definitely a successful meet for me. I didn’t even expect to make districts but I got to states. I had a lot of time drops and I worked hard so I’m happy with the result.”

A shoulder injury at the beginning of the year prevented her from swimming one of her best events, the 100 butterfly.

“I’m definitely hoping to swim more fly next year but I’m still going to keep the freestyle because I had so much success this year.”

Wissahickon’s Amanda Zlotnikoff also competed in the 50 freestyle, finishing 21st (24.47).

“This was a good warm up for me,” said Zlotnikoff, a sophomore who will swim the 100 backstroke on Thursday. “I’m more serious about my other event.

“Last year I didn’t make it in the 50 so this is new for me, and this is the first time I was in two events. Now I’m really excited for the backstroke and I’m not going to let the 50 bring me down. The backstroke is myfavorite event.”

Teammate Danny Knoll is looking forward to his first-ever state swim in Thursday’s 100 freestyle.

“I’m pretty excited about it,” said Knoll, a junior. “It’s a good experience for me. I practiced in the pool and it was amazing so I can’twait to actually race.”

He and Zlotnikoff are the lone Trojans at the meet.

“I just wish I’d brought teammates with me,” Knoll said. “It’s kind of lonely.”

For Cheltenham freshman Matthew Werner, this year’s state meet was a bonus.

The 12th place finisher in the District One Class AAA meet,Werner was an alternate for the state meet but got the call to compete.

He finished 20th (271.10).

“I didn’t really expect this but I thought I had a chance to go so I’m really glad I was able to do this,” he said. “Once I got her my goal was to make the semifinals and I did it.

“There was no pressure because just being here was a bonus for me.”
