Zach Quattro wasn’t worried about personal milestones as his Hatboro-Horsham team was staging a second half comeback in Friday night’s game at Pennridge. Granted, the Hatter senior knew that he needed 19 points to reach the 1,000-point milestone, but that was the last thing on his mind during his team’s fourth quarter rally.

“I was just playing my game like any other game,” he said. “I was just trying to help my team as much as I could.”

In the midst of his team’s rally, the Hatter senior buried a three-pointer from the top off an inbounds play that vaulted him to the magical 1,000-point plateau, but play continued. He followed his historic basket with another three-pointer that trimmed a once 24-point lead to five. Quattro finished the game (a 60-49 loss) with 24 points.

He is the 12th male basketball player in Hatboro-Horsham history to reach the historic milestone.

“After my freshman year, I really dedicated myself to working hard, and that was definitely one of the goals I had,” Quattro said. “Especially after having good sophomore and junior years, I knew heading into this year I had a shot at getting it.”

Quattro, who has accepted a basketball scholarship to Le Moyne College, entered his final high school season needing 272 points to reach the milestone.

“It’s definitely an accomplishment that recognizes dedication, persistence and hard work, and you have to be consistent,” coach Dennis Steinly said.

The senior standout got a taste of varsity action at the end of his freshman year. He’s been a fixture in the starting lineup the past three years, and the possibility of reaching the 1,000-point mark became realistic after a superb junior season that saw him average 17 points a game.

A first team all-league player, Quattro is one of just a few returning veterans from last year’s SOL Continental Conference championship squad.

“He has probably been our most consistent player throughout the season,” Steinly said. “He has been harassed by defenses the whole season, and to still do it without losing your composure shows you what kind of temperament he has.

“He’s had some rough games, but that’s part of the growing process and in the big picture will help him as a basketball player.”

For Quattro, the milestone is the culmination of years of hard work.

“I’ve been playing basketball for a long time, probably since I was five, and it’s been pretty much my life,” he said said. “I’ve been fortunate to have some really good teammates and coaches, and my family has supported me. I wouldn’t be able to do it without all those people. I’m just very fortunate.”

Quattro, who measures in at 6-6, added the three-point shot to his repertoire after his freshman year.

“That’s when I realized I had to work on different parts of my game,” he said. “I really focused on my outside shot, having a good inside-outside game.

“To get it on that kind of shot with all the preparation I put in, it definitely felt good.”

Quattro will be recognized for his accomplishment prior to the Hatters’ Senior Night game against Quakertown on Feb. 4.
