Noa Rothstein, University of Michigan (Rowing)

Major: Movement Science at the School of Kinesiology

Final list of colleges:  Michigan, Boston University, University of North Carolina

Reasons for choosing Michigan:  “I want to be an occupational therapist, so I was immediately drawn to their School of Kinesiology, and just the balance of being a Big 10 school and also having a great academic life, and their rowing program is known for being really good. I’m a very competitive person, so this will be a good school for me.”

How did you get involved in rowing, and what was the progression that led you to rowing at the collegiate level?  “My friend did a camp over the summer going into my sophomore year, and she told me and my sister to try out rowing with her that fall. I went to novice that year and realized that I was only 95 pounds and I probably wouldn’t be able to row, so I picked up coxing, and I ended up being good. I was on the novice first boat.
“In my junior year, my first season on varsity, I was moved up to first boat. I didn’t really think I was going to cox in college because by the time I was on varsity it was still pretty new to me. Until the spring of my first varsity year – we were winning a lot of races, and I got to go to nationals, and I wasn’t ready for my senior year to be my last year.
“When I started, I had no idea what I was expecting. Especially picking it up my sophomore year, I wouldn’t think I’d be where I am now.”

What is the role of a coxswain?  “There are two parts to it. There’s the organizational aspect where I basically run the practice, make sure the boat gets into and out of the water smoothly, I take care of all of the equipment, and I basically call out commands from the boat in practice just to make sure everyone is on the same page. I coach the girls on their technique.
“There’s another aspect which is the motivational aspect, so during pieces and during races, I put together a race plan, so I know what to say to the girls that will make them pull as fast as they can.
“I’m competitive, but I’m not the most outgoing, but something changes when I’m on the water.”

Coach Ted Sobolewski says:  “Noa’s work ethic and leadership from the coxswain seat has made a huge impact on our team. She has worked incredibly hard to prepare herself to compete at the highest levels of the junior rowing, and it will be exciting to see her continue to develop at the highest levels of collegiate rowing. Michigan’s rowing program is consistently among the best in the country and will provide an environment that Noa will thrive in. I hope she will continue to develop her abilities both academically and athletically to have the same impact for Michigan that she has at Mercer.”
