Schafer Honored for All-America Selection

Neshaminy’s Megan Schafer recently was recognized for her All-America selection at the NSCAA’s National Convention.

The hardware just keeps accumulating for Megan Schafer.

The Neshaminy junior traveled to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s National Convention in Indianapolis, Ind., Jan. 18-19 with coach Rachel Clemens where Schafer was recognized for her NSCAA All-America selection as well as her selection as 2012 NSCAA High School State Player of the Year for Pennsylvania.

“It was awesome,” Schafer said. “Just being able to be one of the 80 girls who were there and being given the opportunity that I was fortunate enough to be nominated for this - I couldn’t be more fortunate to actually go to the convention.”

For Schafer, it was her second consecutive All-America recognition.

“It was pretty exciting,” Clemens said. “It’s a very humbling event. You get to see and be around just a bunch of elite soccer players. We’re talking about players that are the best out of every single state.

“It’s just a wonderful event with all these people.”

A highlight of the trip was the banquet honoring the collegiate and high school All-Americans as well as the Scholar All-Americans. Julie Foudy, a member of the US National team that captured the gold medal in the 1996 Olympics, was the guest speaker.

“Julie Foudy spoke, and I was so excited that I got to shake her hand,” Schafer said. “Listening to her speak – she was so inspirational, and it just meant a lot to me.”

This past weekend, Schafer traveled to Harrisburg where she was recognized for her selection at the 2012 PSCA Female Player of the Year.

“Anyone who has the hardware she has – they walk around with a big ego, and but Megan, not at all,” Clemens said. “You would never know. She does not care about what she does individually. It’s all about the team, and that’s what so many people really respect and admire about her.”

Schafer has made a verbal commitment to take her talents to Penn State University.
