Megan Shenk – United States Air Force Academy (Soccer)

Major:  Engineering with a minor in Religious Studies

Final list of colleges:  Air Force, United States Naval Academy, University of Iowa

Reasons for choosing Air Force:  “Quality of academics, the ability to become a military officer upon graduation, destination, and the soccer program.”

High school accomplishments:  Soccer captain, member of four-time league championship squad that was the state runner-up in 2011. Distinguished honor roll all four years.

Coach Audrey Anderson says:  “My fondest memory of Megan this year was during the transition between Jorge Rodriguez and myself - he would come up and help during the summer, and we both want what’s best for the girls. We’ve coached together for seven seasons, and we had a really good working relationship. I would call him for advice. It’s always good to have someone with his knowledge that you could call and ask questions. He was offering some help. Megan’s response to that was, ‘She knows what she’s talking about.’ It was like, ‘Okay, my team believes in me.’ I have the highest respect for Jorge, and you start second guessing every decision – is that the way Jorge would have done it? To have Megan stand up and say, ‘She knows what she’s doing. We trust her.’ After that moment at preseason, I knew this team was going to rally. We were not going to focus on a new coach, but our focus was then – how are we going to get to the state championship. It was a moment for me that changed my focus as well – I have to do my very best to make sure I’m doing what I need to be doing, and I think that speaks for Megan’s character. She reminds me of her parents. I don’t know her dad that well, but her mom is a super lady. Megan is such an outstanding person. When you see her on the soccer field, it’s so much more special because you know she’s great off the field. She puts everything she has on the field. She’s just a great person.
“This was a really special group of seniors this year. Out of the nine, six were starters, and six are going to college to play soccer, and two of the others definitely want to. They’re all going on to do bigger and better things. With Megan, I don’t think there are limitations. Whatever she wants to do, she’s going to do. She’s been talking about the Air Force since I can remember. For her to stay on that path and know how much hard work it will be – I can see her doing great things there. I really can.”
