Quakertown coach Peach Draper is desperately searching for that first victory in her first season as Panther coach.

Q-town (0-5-3) played very well in a 2-1 loss to Souderton (5-3) in a SOL Continental Conference field hockey game, but both Draper and her team are anxious to crack into the win column.

“It seems like every game is just like one before it,” smiled Draper. “We have three ties – and we lost three games by a 2-1 score.

“We’re right there, fighting, never giving up,” added the coach. “Once we win that first game, I’m sure winning will become contagious.”

Quakertown played the Big Red close from the opening whistle to the final whistle. But the Panthers were never able to cash in on late flurries in front of the net.

“Quakertown is very dangerous, very fast,” said veteran coach Mary Ann Harris. “And anytime a team keeps it to a one goal game, you are never at ease.

“I thought we should have had more chances to score goals,” continued the coach. “We got the ball into the striking zone, but we couldn’t put the ball into the goal.”

Souderton did, though, score the first goal of the game at the 28:43 mark of the first half. Becca Reach pushed the ball into the goal with an assist from Becca Chylack.

Quakertown answered minutes later when Cassandra Landis cashed in on rebound off the stick of teammate Colleen Gavin at the 20:36 mark of the first half.

“We have been working hard on rebounds,” said Draper. “Cassandra was in a good spot, and she put the ball in the goal.”

Souderton scored what proved to be the game winner at the 8:15 mark of the first half when Olivia Shoemaker redirected a shot by Chylack into the goal.

“I really could not see the ball at all,” said Shoemaker. “I saw the shot being taken – and then the ball rolled through the girl’s leg behind me and on my stick.”

The Right Place – Right Time goal was the difference in the scoring.

The first half stats favored the Big Red who out shot Q-town 4-2 and had five corners compared to just one for the Panthers.

The second half stats slightly favored Quakertown who out shot Souderton 3-1. The Panthers had four corners compared to five by the Big Red over the final 30 minutes.

Both goalies – Souderton’s Ann Jefferis and Quakertown’s Sarah Werner – kept the ball out of the goal the entire second half.

“The losing gets frustrating at times,” said Draper. “But the girls have a great attitude and have kept it positive. They very much want to win.”

“The best team always scores the most goals,” said Harris. “No matter how well you play, and we have outplayed teams and lost, the best team always scores the most goals.”

Simple as that.
