SHSHL AA Playoff Preview

Scott Huff previews Monday’s SHSHL playoff games and recaps the final week of SHSHL regular season action.

The 2014-2015 Suburban High School Hockey League regular season is in the history books – and the 2014-2015 SHSHL playoff history will be written this week.

The Class AA championship series will begin Monday as the top eight seeded teams from the SHSHL Continental and SHSHL National Conference will take to the ice.

The defending Flyers Cup and Class AA state champion Central Bucks South Titans (Continental) earned the top seed and will face the 8th seeded Neshaminy Redskins (National).  The second seed was earned by the Council Rock South Golden Hawks (National) who will face the 7th seeded Pennsbury Falcons (National).  The third seed was earned by the Central Bucks West Bucks (Continental) will face the 6th seeded Central Bucks East Patriots (Continental).  And the fourth seed was earned by the North Penn Knights (Continental) who will face the 5th seeded William Tennent Panthers (National).

The winners will all advance to the SHSHL Class AA semifinals to be played on Wednesday at Hatfield Ice.  And the SHSHL Class AA championship game will be played on Thursday at Hatfield Ice with a 6:40 pm face-off.

The Class A SHSHL championship series will begin on Wednesday (2/25/15) as the top four seeded teams from the American Conference will take the ice in semifinal contests.

The Wissahickon Trojans earned the top seed and will face the 4th seeded Plymouth Whitemarsh Colonials.  The second seed was earned by the Harry S Truman Tigers who will face the 3rd seeded Hatboro-Horsham Hatters.

The SHSHL American Conference championship game will be played Thursday at Hatfield with an 8:20 pm face-off.

Head To Head:  Central Bucks Southrouted Neshaminy by a 10-0 score in the only meeting between the teams this year back on December 17, 2014.  In that contest – Leo Flick and Anthony Rubas each scored a pair of goals to fuel the Titan offense, while goaltender Aaron King recorded the shutout with 12 saves.  Redskin goaltender Matt Sheley registered 33 saves in net.

Head To Head:  North Penn defeated William Tennent by a 6-3 score in the only meeting of the two teams this year back on January 9, 2015.  In that contest – Alex Peterson fueled the Knight offense with a four-goal explosion, while goaltender John Roberts was excellent in net with 33 saves.  The Panthers had three single goal scorers – Andrew Bean, Mike Padgeon, and Alec Dugan – and goaltender CJ Lineman registered 19 saves.

Head To Head:   Central Bucks West played Central Bucks East twice during the regular season – and both ended in ties.  Back on November 26, 2014, the Bucks and the Patriots played to a 2-2 deadlock.  In that game, Gary Palmer and Nick Chimeria scored goals for East and goaltender Evan Angotti had a remarkable 42 saves.  Shawn Philipps and Luke McCleerey scored goals for West while Jonah Brous stopped 33 shots.  Back on December 11, 2014, the Bucks and the Patriots played to a 3-3 deadlock.  In that game – Jake Davis, Bryan McIntosh, and Brennan Kolar scored for CBE and goalie Steve Gilcrest had 34 saves.  Dalton Anton, Joe Anton, and Scotty Cappuccio scored goals for CBW while Brous had 33 saves in net for the Bucks.

# 2 Council Rock South Golden Hawks (11-4-1, 23) vs. # 7 Pennsbury Falcons (9-7-0, 18)
@Bucks County Ice – 6:30 pm

Head To Head:  Council Rock South played Pennsbury twice during the regular season with Rock South winning both games.  In the first meeting – the Golden Hawks outgunned the Falcons 9-7 – and in the second meeting CR South routed Pennsbury 8-1.  In the shootout first meeting, the offense for Rock South was fueled by Kyle Bradley with three goals.  Nick Meli, Brian McBride, Chad Weiner, Justin Adams, Matt Owens, and Danny Richmond each scored single goals.  Christian George was in net and had 24 saves.  In the first meeting loss – the Falcons received two-goal efforts from both Jack Kelly and Luke Ledes.  Single goals for PHS were scored by Nathan Raccagno, Anthony Bench, and Ryan Mudrick.  Trevor Schadler recorded 33 saves for the Falcons.  In the second meeting – the Golden Hawk offense featured a three-goal effort by Adams and a two-goal effort by Meli.  Bradley, Parker DeFelice, and Austin Price had solo goals – and George registered 17 saves.  In the second meeting, the lone goal scorer for the Falcons was Ledes – and the goaltending duties were split by Schadler (8 saves) and Dous August (9 saves).

Council Rock South (11-4-1, 23) secured the SHSHL National Conference regular season championship with a pair of conference wins last week.  The Golden Hawks opened the week with a 4-3 victory over Neshaminy (6-10-0, 12) and closed the week with a 5-1 win over rival Council Rock North (4-11-1, 9).  In the win over the Skins – Darren Barder, Kyle Bradley, Matt Owens, and Jay Jenkins all scored single goals.  Mason Procz had eight saves.  In the victory over the Indians – Danny Richmond had a pair of goals while Owens, Dylan Varian, and Nick Meli scored solo goals.  Christian George was the winning goaltender with 22 saves.
Neshaminy (6-10-0, 12) earned the eighth and final SHSHL playoff berth as the Redskins split a pair of games last week.  Neshaminy opened the week with a tough 4-3 loss to first place Council Rock South (12-4-1, 23) and closed the week with a key 6-5 win over third place Pennbury (9-7-0, 18).  In the loss to the Hawks, Nick Foster scored a pair of goals while Ian Dixon scored a single goal.  Matt Sheley was terrific in goal with 37 saves.  In the win over the Falcons – Foster had three goals, while Dixon and Mike Maher scored solo goals.  Sheley had 29 saves in a winning performance.
Pennsbury (9-7-0, 18) split a pair of games and finished the regular season in third place.  The Falcons opened the week with a 5-3 victory over William Tennent (10-6-0, 20) and closed the week with a 6-5 loss to Neshaminy (6-10-0, 12).  In the win over the Panthers, Jack Kelly scored a pair of goals to fuel the offense, while Anthony Bench, Luke Ledes, and Kevin Koerner each scored single goals.  Trevor Schadler was the winning net minder with 18 saves.  In the loss to the Redskins, Adam Shapiro led the scoring with a pair of goals - while Tommy Hynes, Kelly, and Ledes each scored single goals.  Schadler registered 23 saves.
William Tennent (10-6-0, 20) lost its final conference game but remained in second place in the standings.  The Panthers fell to Pennsbury (9-7-0, 18) by a 5-3 score.  Jack McKeever, Chris Kreider, and Sean Ovington were the goal scorers for WT – net minder CJ Lineman had 19 saves.
Council Rock North (4-11-1, 9) closed out its conference schedule – and season – with a 5-1 loss to first place Council Rock South (11-4-1, 23).  Cavan Tully was the lone goal scorer for the Indians – while goalie Andy Cicconi had a remarkable 68 saves.
Abington (5-10-1, 11) was idle last week and missed the playoffs by a single point in the standings.  The Ghosts trailed Neshaminy (6-10,-0, 12) in the final standings.

Central Bucks South (13-2-1, 27) captured the SHSHL Continental Conference championship as the Titans split a pair of games last week.  CB South opened the week with a 5-0 loss to CB West (9-2-5, 23) and closed the week with a 6-4 victory over North Penn (10-4-2, 22).  In the victory over the Knights, Tyler Dunn sparked the offense with a pair of goals.  Thomas Liberta, Jared Conroy, Matt Stoll, and Justin McGowan each scored single goals.  Aaron King earned the win with 10 saves.
Central Bucks West (9-2-5, 23) closed out an excellent regular season with a split of conference games last week.  The Bucks opened the week with a 4-2 loss to North Penn and finished the week with a stunning 5-0 victory over first place Central Bucks South.  In the loss to the Knights, Patrick Smith and Scotty Cappuccio each scored a single goal – and Jonah Brous had 32 saves.  In the huge win of the Titans, Brous was spectacular with 42 saves – while Eric Schwass scored a pair of goals and Cappuccio, Luke McCleerey, and John McCreadie each scored single goals.
Central Bucks East (7-4-5, 19) finished its season with a win and a berth in the SHSHL playoffs.  The Patriots won their only conference game as they routed Souderton (0-16-0, 0) by a 9-2 margin.  Austin Chase and Nick Chimeria each scored three goals for the winners - while Bryan McIntosh, Brennan Kolar, and Jake Davis scored single goals.  Steve Gilcrest recorded 14 saves in net for the Patriots.
North Penn (10-4-2, 22) closed out its conference season with a 6-4 loss to Central Bucks South (13-2-1, 27).  Alex Peterson, Jake Heckenberger, Derek Heckler, and Ryan Nowicki each scored solo goals for the Knights, while John Roberts registered 36 saves.
Souderton (0-16-0, 0) closed out its schedule – and season – as the Indians were defeated by Central Bucks East (7-4-5, 19) by a 9-2 score.  Gabe Evans scored both goals for the Big Red while Joshua Smith had a fine game in goal with 31 saves.
Pennridge (4-12-0, 8) was idle last week as the Rams ended their season out of the playoffs in fifth place.

Wissahickon (16-1-1, 33) secured the SHSHL American Conference title with a pair of wins last week.  The Trojans opened the week with a 3-2 win over Plymouth Whitemarsh and closed the week with a 9-0 victory over Lower Moreland (1-12-5, 7).  In the win over the Colonials, Jacob Delsemer, Brandon Rosoff, and Kyle Wolf each scored single goals and Noah Katz recorded 12 saves in goal.  In the win over the Lions, Dylan Alioto and Rosoff each scored a pair of goals, while Ryen Haney, Harry Hessler, Ed Burkhart, Kevin Schaeffer, and Matt Wilson all scored solo goals.  Jake Modelevsky earned the win with seven saves.
Truman (14-3-1, 29) secured second place in the final American Conference standings with a pair of wins last week.  The Tigers opened the week with an 8-4 victory over Hatboro-Horsham (7-7-4, 18) and closed the week with a 6-4 victory over Upper Moreland (4-13-1,9).  In the win over the Hatters – Zachary Bennett scored four goals, while Zach Bennett scored two goals.  Michael Roarty and Codey Gordon each scored single goals, while goalie Kyle Huth had 21 saves.
Hatboro-Horsham (7-7-4, 18) held on to third place in the standings despite an 8-4 loss to Truman (14-3-1, 29).  Max Thalhelmer scored two goals for the Hatters, while Ryan Sharp and Jacob Mueller each scored single goals.  Goaltender Ryan McElroy registered 28 saves in net.
Plymouth Whitemarsh (8-9-1, 17) secured the fourth and final SHSHL American Conference playoff position as the Colonials split a pair of games last week.  PW opened the week with a competitive 3-2 loss to first place Wissahickon (16-1-1, 33) and followed with a playoff clinching 4-2 victory over Upper Dublin (6-11-1, 13).  In the loss to the Trojans – Joe Jordan and Chris Rinaldi scored single goals while Jacob Magill registered 36 saves.  In the win over the Cardinals – John Sciarrone, Kevin Lawrence, Christopher Zawislak, and Jonathan Isley all scored single goals for the Colonials.
Upper Moreland (4-13-1, 9) closed out its season with a tie and a loss last week.  The Golden Bears opened the week with a 7-7 tie with Lower Moreland (1-12-5, 7) and closed the week with a 6-4 loss to Truman (14-3-1, 29).  In the tie with the Lions – Nick Park fueled the offense with three goals, while Mykel Courduff added two goals for the winners.  Ryan MacFarland and Colin Burch scored solo goals for the Golden Bears, while net minder Patrick Beissel had 29 saves. 
Lower Moreland (1-12-5)
closed out its season with a tie and a loss last week.  The Lions opened the week with a 7-7 tie with Upper Moreland (4-13-1, 9) and closed the week with a 9-0 loss to Wissahickon (16-1-1, 33).  In the tie with the Bears – Cory Blumenthal scored four goals, Sean Irving scored two goals, and AJ Dorazio scored a single goal.  Eric Sphar was terrific with 41 saves.  In the loss to the Trojans, Sphar was even more terrific with 59 saves.
