SHSHL Ice Hockey Playoff Wrap (2-27-13)

North Penn and Central Bucks South advanced to the SHSHL Class AAA championship round while Archbishop Wood and Upper Moreland will do battle in Class AA.

CLASS AAA
NORTH PENN 7, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 2
The Knights scored on five of their seven shots in the opening period on their way to a 5-1 lead over the defending champion Golden Hawks, and they never looked back on their way to the big win.
Cody Matthews was brilliant in goal for the Knights, turning away 46 of 48 shots. The Golden Hawks pelted Matthews with 29 shots in the second period but did not score a goal.
Matthew Stella and Christian Ahn both had three-point nights for North Penn with Stella contributing two goals and one assist and Ahn dishing out three assists. Alex Peterson had a pair of goals while Caleb Witzaney and Nick Capasso each had a goal and an assist for the Knights.
For the Golden Hawks, Alexander Drobot had a goal and an assist, and Nicholas Keck had two assists.
Rock South’s Justin Houk turned away 27 of 34 shots he faced.
The Knights will face Central Bucks South in the championship round.

CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 6, SOUDERTON 2
The Titans took an early 2-0 lead, and although the Big Red cut that lead in half on a powerplay goal by Chris Malanga (Dylan Manto assist), the Titans had an answer as Jimmy Milanese connected on a powerplay goal (Mike Pilla/Bobby Mallon assists) to send the Titans into the second period with a 3-1 lead. Souderton would get no closer than two goals the rest of the way.
Milanese had a four-point night for the Titans, contributing two goals and two assists. Brenden Clements (one goal, one assist), Nick DeLaurentis (two goals) and Mallon (two assists) each had two-point nights. Malanga had a goal and an assist to lead the Indians.
Souderton goalie Bryce McMichael turned away 30 of 36 shots he faced while South’s Jeff Peklowski was credited with 23 saves on 25 shots.
The Titans advance to the championship round where they will face North Penn.

UPPER MORELAND 4, LANSDALE CATHOLIC 1
The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead into the second period, thanks to a first period goal from Patrick Longhitano (Michael Longhitano/Andrew Hart assists), but that lead was shortlived. The Golden Bears scored a pair of goals in span of just over two minutes to take a lead they would never lose. Nick Park (Matthew Iehle/Matthew Baumgardner assists) scored the equalizer, and Jordin Holmes scored a powerplay goal to send the Golden Bears into the final period with a 2-1 lead. Goals by Holmes (Kyle Landis assist) and Matthew Baumgarnder (Nike Park/Matthew Iehle assists) – this time within a one-minute span – put the finishing touches on the win.
LC goalie Helen Cooney turned away 21 of 25 shots she faced. Upper Moreland’s Jared Burch turned away 25 of 26 shots in a stellar outing.
The Golden Bears will face Archbishop Wood in the championship round.

ARCHBISHOP WOOD 6, WISSAHICKON 5
The Trojans jumped out to a 3-0 lead and still led 3-2 at the end of one period, and the two teams were deadlocked 4-4 heading into the final period when the Vikings eked out the win. Nick Patton (Ryan Meinke/Troy Potts assists) put the Vikings on top 5-4, but Dustin Rabinowitz answered with a powerplay goal for the Trojans (Matt Vervlied/Luke Honorowski assists). Patton scored the game winner on a powerplay goal, using an assist from Matt Mandes.
Meinke and Patton led the Vikings with two goals and two assists each. Mandes and Potts both had three-point nights with each adding a goal and two assists. The Trojans were led by the two-goal, one-assist effort of Rabinowitz while Honorowski had three assists. Tyle Freas had a pair of goals, Edward Burkart had a goal and an assist.
In goal, Wissahickon’s Jordan Fromm turned away 28 of 34 shots while his counterpart, Wood’s John Capinas, had 20 saves on 25 shots.
The Vikings will take on Upper Moreland in the championship round.
