HATFIELD — Bugs swarm, especially bees, gathering around their target.

Council Rock South’s ice hockey team swarms, and even though they don’t have stingers, they are dangerous when they begin to swarm.

Just ask Central Bucks East.

The Golden Hawks scored early and often enroute to an 11-1 mercy-rule victory over the Patriots on Wednesday night at Hatfield Ice.

South scored five times in the first period, added four more in the second and finished it off with two in the third. East netted its lone goal in the second period.

“When you get opportunities like this, you have to make the best of the opportunities and make sure you’re not too high and not too low,” said CR South coach Joe Houk. “Just get the job done.

“Tonight was one of our stronger games. I thought we moved the puck real well.”

Kevin Koles was just one of the many players recording points in the game. He had three assists by the end of the first period, added one in the second and then finished off the scoring in the third with a goal and an assist.

“I think we were moving the puck pretty well,” said Koles, whose six points led a dangerous South attack. “Not much chances that they were getting, and when they are, we’re getting the pucks deeper.

“Obviously, we’re just looking for the open guy in the slot, and I think that’s how most of our goals were scored today.

“We’re not really focused on who scored. We’re just focused on putting the puck in the back of the net. Whoever gets it gets it.”

All told, seven Golden Hawks hit the back of the net. With Wednesday’s 11 goals, South has 63 goals in six games, and in some of them contests, like Wednesday’s, they aren’t even playing the full 51 minutes.

East coach Jeff Mitchell knew what his team would be facing coming into the game. And, not surprisingly, he got it.

“We were expecting to play probably the best team in the league, a high caliber team that has a lot of high-end talent,” Mitchell said. “I would have liked to get a better start, a harder start right out of the gate, but they are a great team. We just couldn’t keep up.

“I felt like we were kind of on the defeated side before we even set foot on the ice. It was 6-0 going into the first five, six minutes.”

Actually, it was 2-0 after five minutes but it got worse quickly.

“They have no shortage of scoring talent over there,” Mitchell said. “It’s good for them.

“I would have liked to stay a little bit closer for a bit longer. But it is what it is.”

Koles, who is a defenseman, is one of Rock South’s leaders, both on the ice and off.

“He’s my most stellar guy,” Houk said. “Kevin sees the ice well. He holds it together.”

South wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard. With only 29 seconds gone in the first period, Gavin Nisenzon got things rolling, ripping one past East goalie Cole Breen off assists from Chase Tovsky and Koles.

Koles had a hand in the next two goals also. The first was a goal from Illia Mukhin and the second on a goal from Jake Weiner at the 12:02 mark.

Three minutes later, the score was 4-0 when Mukhin notched his second goal. And 47 seconds later, Jackson Mosley finished off the first period onslaught.

Things didn’t get any better for East in the second period. Four more South goals went up on the scoreboard.

Mukhin collected his third goal with only17 seconds elapsed. Nikita Volobuiev and Weiner added goals to make it 8-0 before Ethan Cenci got the Patriots into the scoring at the 9:11 mark. Weiner finished off his hat trick minutes later to put the Hawks up 9-1 after two periods.

That set things up for what turned out to be the final 2:35 of the game. Blaise Pepe scored with 1:24 gone in the third period and Koles ended it at 2:35.

In addition to Koles’ six points, Weiner and Mukhin both had five each. Volobuiev contributed four points as the Golden Hawks upped their record to a league best 6-0.

“We’re top to bottom this year from the goal line on out,” Houk said. “There’s not a lot of holes.”

Amen to that.
