LEHIGH VALLEY 8, SOL AMERICAN/CONTINENTAL 4
Lehigh Valley opened up a 6-0 lead after four innings. The SOL American/Continental erupted for four runs in the sixth, but that’s as close as it would get in Wednesday’s Carpenter Cup opener at FDR Park.
After a one-two-three first inning, Plymouth Whitemarsh senior Anthony Tomassetti hit a two-out double to left center in the second. A strikeout for the inning’s third out brought an end to that threat.
With one out in the third inning, Plymouth Whitemarsh’s Mike Orensky and Cheltenham’s Lukas Nakkula collected back-to-back singles, but the SOL American/Continental could not capitalize.
One inning later, Lehigh Valley opened up a 6-0 lead before the SOL American/Continental got on the scoreboard with a four-run sixth. Hatboro-Horsham’s Jimmy Tooley was hit by a pitch to open the inning, and PW’s Kevin Reilly singled through the right side. Pennridge’s Ray Knight doubled, plating a run. North Penn’s Colby Chan, Quakertown’s Dennis Pierce and Wissahickon’s Jackson Tappen each drew walks. Pierce’s and Tappen’s– with the bases loaded - both pushed a run across. Chan scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Central Bucks East’s Jack Nugent to make it a 6-4 game. The SOL American/Continental would get no closer.
The SOL American/Continental collected eight hits – no player had more than one.
North Penn’s Joe Valenti, who allowed three hits and two runs (only one earned) in two innings, absorbed the loss. North Penn’s Josh Lowe allowed one hit and struck out two in a scoreless inning on the mound. Upper Dublin’s Sean Curran did not allow a hit in two scoreless innings. He walked one and struck out a paid.
