Philadelphia - The Suburban One League – American/Continental opened its defense of its 2016 Carpenter Cup title with an impressive 20-5 victory over the Philadelphia Catholic League in a game played on the pristine Ashburn Field at FDR Park. The SOL/AC will advance to a second round game on Monday (6/12 @ 12:30) on the immaculate Showcase UYA Field at FDR Park against Delaware North, which won its opening round game 3-2 over Berks County.

SOL/AC head coach Jon Pallone (Quakertown) rode last season’s Carpenter Cup championship bus as an assistant coach and knows the journey well.

“This year is a bit different in that I am the head coach,” said Pallone.  “I get to look at the roster, make out the lineup, and try to find the right combinations.

“It was great to have a group of players back from that championship team to build around,” added Pallone in reference to Nick Pave (Springfield), Jake Reed (Quakertown), Andrew Mayhew (Pennridge), JT Breslin (Upper Dublin), Nate O’Donnell (North Penn), Luke Barnum (Souderton) and Thyar Summarell (Souderton).  “Everyone always looks at pitching, and to have a pitcher like Nick (Pave) gives everyone a great deal of confidence.”

Pave – who was the starting pitcher in the championship game a year ago at Citizen’s Bank Park – was once again the starting pitcher for the SOL/AC team in the opening round game.

“It is really cool to be back playing in the Carpenter Cup,” said Pave.  “I really don’t get to see this much talent in one place during our regular season – and the competition is great.

“The facility here (Ashburn Field) is great, but it is even greater at Citizen’s Bank Park,” added Pave.  “This was a good start for us – it’s hard to lose when your team scores you that many runs.”

Part of that offense was generated by North Penn junior Ryan Bealer who drove home a pair of runs with a triple in a four-run third inning.  Bealer is one of eight Knights on the SOL/AC roster – a list that includes seniors O’Donnell and Corey Stouffer; juniors Danny Kirwin, Tyler Siddal, Billy Collins, and Hunter Hamlin; and sophomore Zack Miles.

“Sometimes it helps to play with players that you have played with all season,” said Bealer.  “We know how to play with each other – you have my back and I have your back.

“But it is also great to play with players from the other teams,” added Bealer.  “They are bitter rivals during the season, and now they become your teammates.”

“This is a very young group to play on a Carpenter Cup team,” said Pallone as the SOL/AC boasts a talented roster of 11 juniors, seven seniors, six sophomores, and a freshman (Plymouth Whitemarsh catcher Kevin Reilly).  “It was great to see the way we scored runs today – and maybe a lot of these kids will be back again next year.

“I know that it has been a great experience for the Quakertown kids,” added Pallone in reference to Reed (Bloomsburg), junior Justin Guidos, and sophomore Dennis Pierce.  “Jake just loves the game of baseball and wants to play any game he can get into.  And both Justin and Dennis have a chance to get some exposure and continue their high school season against some quality competition.”

Batter Up….

The SOL/AC led 5-4 after five innings but put the game away with a five-run sixth inning and a nine-run offensive explosion in the eighth inning.  The winner’s line score was impressive with 20 runs and 19 hits.

The hottest bats belonged to Zach Miles (North Penn) and Thylar Summarell (Souderton).  Miles played shortstop and had two hits with four RBI and scored two runs, while Summarell played right field and matched Miles with two hits and four RBI and two runs scored.

Other offensive firepower came from Jake Reed (Quakertown) who had two hits and scored three runs; Luke Barnum (Souderton) who had two hits and an RBI; Billy Collins (North Penn) was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI; while Tyler Siddal (North Penn) had two hits, scored three runs, and collected two RBI.

On the Bump….

Nick Pave (Springfield) gained the win for the SOL/AC and allowed just a single run over the first two innings.  Alex Crim (Hatboro-Horsham) followed with a two-inning stint that saw him register two strikeouts.  Justin Guidos (Quakertown) hurled the fifth inning for the winners.  Danny Kirwin (North Penn) had the longest mound appearance throwing three shutout innings with three strikeouts. The Knights’ ace did not allow a hit. Andrew Mayhew (Pennridge) finished the game for the SOL/AC and struck out two hitters in his single inning of work.

Finally…

“Things went really well for us offensively, but there are still some adjustments I would like to make,” said Pallone.  “Maybe a tweak here or a tweak there, but I don’t want to change too much.

“The idea is to give the players an opportunity to play against good competition and in front of some scouts,” added Pallone.  “And to have some fun doing it.”

And a 20-5 win in the opening round of the Carpenter Cup sounded like it was a great deal of fun.
