SOL Baseball Wrap (4-9-14)

Check out the results for SOL baseball teams in action Wednesday.

SOUDERTON 10, NORTH PENN 9
The Knights appeared to be in complete command when they opened up a 9-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning of Tuesday’s Continental Conference game, but that’s when the fun stopped.
Souderton scored three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and added single runs in the sixth and seventh to earn the dramatic come-from-behind win. Jason  Smith capped a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate with a one-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to plate the game winner.
“They battled back,” coach Mike Childs said. “The kids did an awesome job.
“At 9-2, they hung their heads a little bit, but they still had some fight in them. We took advantage of their pitchers walking us, and overall, it worked out for us.”
The Indians benefitted immensely from 14 free passes – 12 walks and a pair of hit batters.
All but lost in the shuffle of Smith’s seventh inning heroics was the standout relief effort of Luke Caviston, who threw 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball. The senior right hander allowed just one hit and one walk while fanning three.
“This was his first pitching experience this year,” Childs said. “It was his first outing, and he did well. He held them in check. Especially late in the game when we needed him to step up, he stepped up big time.”
Offensively, the Indians were led by the three-hit effort of Smith that included a double, stolen base and three runs scored. He also drew a walk to reach base safely on all four trips to the plate. Micah Plank was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Aaron Gulibon was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
For the Knights, Brendan Heggan was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Jared Melone and Douglas Apple both finished the day 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Bobby Scott also had a double in a game that saw the Knights hold a 9-8 advantage in hits.
While the Knights fell to 1-1 in league play (2-2 overall), the Indians improved to 3-0 in the league (4-1 overall).
“This is huge,” Childs said. “They’re great kids. I could say that every year, but this group – they’re baseball guys. They love it, they get along with each other. It’s a really neat team. They’re having fun – they’re definitely having fun.
“Anything can happen in high school baseball, and that’s what I told them in the third inning. In our league, anyone can beat anyone on any given day.”

HATBORO-HORSHAM 2, PENNRIDGE 1 (9 innings)

Propelled by the standout performances of Dave Brown and Eric Lane on the mound, the Hatters eked out a 2-1 win over the Rams. Brown allowed just one run and three hits in the first five innings while Lane tossed four shutout innings to earn the win. He allowed just two hits.
“It was nice to get a league win,” coach Pete Moore said. “We’ve been in games. We lost a tough one to Souderton, and CB East just outplayed us.
“It was nice to bounce back today. Dave Brown was outstanding on the mound, and Eric Lane threw four shutout innings in relief.”
The Hatters won it with a run in the top of the ninth. Justin Gregorio singled to open the inning and was replaced by pinch runner Erik Kledon. A sacrifice bunt by Alex Kledon set the stage for junior Chris Crookham to deliver a single to drive in the game winner.
“Chris also played outstanding defense,” Moore said.
The Rams actually struck first with a run in the fifth, but the Hatters got that run back in the top of the sixth, benefitting from a single by junior third baseman Kevin Barron and an RBI walk to Gregorio that plated pinch runner Cole Davis.
“They’re extremely talented, they’re extremely well coached,” Moore said of Pennridge. “They always do the fundamentals.
“Our pitchers were very good, and our defense was outstanding. We had guys that were willing to put their bodies on the line to make plays and pitchers that were able to throw multiple pitches for strikes in any count, and that always gives you a chance to win.
“It was just big for us to get that first win in the league. We’ll go from here. We have a tough game tomorrow against CB South.”
Eric Thomas and Kevin Barron both collected a pair of hits to lead the Hatters. For the Rams, Brad Misialek was 3-for-4 with three singles. He also was hit by a pitch.
The Hatters are 1-2 in the league (3-3 overall) while the Rams are 1-2 in league play (2-2 overall).

PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 4, WISSAHICKON 3
The Colonials found themselves staring at a 3-0 deficit after three innings but exploded for four runs in the fourth and then rode the strong pitching of Jon Fisher and Zach Metz to earn the win.
“We have not played a game since last Tuesday,” PW coach Chris Manero said. “We didn’t know what to expect.
“They had a 3-0 lead going into the fourth, and we were a little flat. We weren’t having good at-bats, but in the fourth inning, we had a couple of big hits.”
None loomed larger than the two-run double by PW’s number nine hitter, Gavin Brody.
“He actually was not originally on the varsity roster but was called up after the first week,” Manero said. “He had a big double, and then our leadoff hitter, Connor Purdy, followed that with another double to give us the lead.”
Purdy reached base all three times he was at the plate, twice getting on board after being hit by pitches.
“We’re at the point where you want to get in a rhythm,” Manero said. “It’s just a matter of getting used to the batting order, getting used to the schedule and getting in some kind of routine.”
Fisher threw six strong innings to earn the win. He allowed just three hits and did not walk a batter while striking out three. Metz threw a scoreless seventh to record the save.
The Trojans, who held a 7-5 advantage in hits, were led by the two-hit effort of Lee Dugger.
While the Trojans fell to 1-2 in league play (1-3 overall), the Colonials upped their record to 2-0 in the league (3-0 overall).

BENSALEM 10, UPPER MERION 3
Jason Mulvey put an exclamation point on a big day at the plate when he delivered a grand slam in the seventh inning. It was his third hit of a productive afternoon. Ben Anderson and Joey Benedetti also homered on a day that saw the Owls pound out 13 hits.
It was Anderson’s two-run blast in the first that spotted the Vikings an early 2-0 lead. In the third inning, the Owls tacked on two more runs, this time benefitting from Benedetti's round tripper that also plated Nick Mulvey. The home run was the sophomore's first hit of the young season.
The Vikings made it a 4-3 game with two runs in the fifth, sparked by RBI singles from Troy Thomas and Brenden Steiner. A strikeout by Nick Mulvey, who relieved winning pitcher Chris Reyes in the frame, brought an end to the Vikings’ rally.
Bensalem added a pair of runs in the sixth, scoring a run on a wild pitch and another on Anderson’s RBI single.
The Vikings were led by the two-hit effort of Thomas.
Wermuth, Anderson and Andy Moser (double) each added two hits for the Owls.
Talon Simon absorbed the loss while Reyes, who threw 4.2 innings, earned the win. He allowed just four hits while fanning four and walking five. Mulvey did not allow a hit in 2.1 scoreless innings in relief.
The Owls are 1-3 overall (0-2 SOL) while the Vikings fell to 1-2 overall.
