CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 2, HATBORO-HORSHAM 1
The Titans have struggled to win the close games this season, falling by two runs or less in five of their seven league losses. On Friday, they turned the tables, finding a way to win despite collecting just three hits.
Two of those hits came in the bottom of the third inning after the Hatters had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the frame. A walk put the Titans’ leadoff batter on base, and when Jake Steinberg turned his sacrifice bunt into an infield single, the Titans had a pair on board with none out.
It looked as though the rally might stall after a failed bunt attempt and a strikeout, but with two outs, both runners advanced on a passed ball, setting the stage for a clutch two-out, two run single by Tanner Pfendner.
“That was the difference,” coach Mike Schaefer said. “That was all we got, and that was all they got.”
The win was the third of the week for the Titans, who also defeated Central Bucks West (4-1) and Souderton (7-1). Their only loss during a four-game stretch came at the hands of Quakertown (3-2).
“The game we lost to Quakertown we had a 2-0 lead going into the seventh inning, and they were down to their last two strikes,” Schaefer said. “They had nobody on, one strike on the hitter, we’re up 2-0, and we ended up losing 3-2. If we close out that game, we’re 4-0 right now.”
The Titans have allowed just one run in each of their three losses this week.
“Our pitching and defense has been phenomenal,” Schaefer said. “We just struggle to score runs at appropriate times and come up with clutch hits.
“Today we were fortunate to get that clutch hit, but we had three hits. You can’t win with three hits and two runs very often. That’s kind of been our story.”
Freshman Danny Klepchick earned the win on the mound, allowing seven hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out seven and walked four. He was relived in the sixth by Dan McCartin, who earned the save with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
“They left 11 guys on base,” Schaefer said. “We had a freshman on the mound, and he was able to pitch out of some tight spots.
“They had an inning where their first two guys led off with walks, but we were able to get out of it. In the last inning, they had the tying run on second, and we got out of it. We fought out of a lot of stuff all day.”
Chris Crookham led the Hatters with a pair of hits, including a double. Ryan Murphy and Eric Lane also doubled.
The Titans (7-9, 6-7 SOL) will play their fifth game in six days when they take on Owen J. Roberts in a non-league contest. The loss knocked the Hatters (11-8, 8-5) out of first place in the conference standings.

Jason Mulvey delivered a walk-off RBI single to plate teammate Chris Kilcoyne in the bottom of the seventh, propelling the Owls to the dramatic come-from-behind win.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first only to watch the Owls answer with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Nick Mulvey delivered a two-run single, and teammate Bill Kohler also had an RBI single in the inning.
That lead turned out to be short-lived as the Panthers exploded for five runs in the second. The Owls knotted things up with two runs in the fourth, and the two teams were still deadlocked 6-6 heading into the seventh when they scored the game winner.
Chris Reyes earned the win for the Owls. He did not allow a hit in two scoreless innings of relief that saw him walk one and fan three.

CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 7, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 3
Senior Sam Jellinek made his first varsity start a memorable one, working four innings and earning the win in Friday’s non-league contest. He allowed six hits and two runs (both unearned) while walking one and striking out two in his third mound appearance of the season.
“He did a great job of pitching to contact and throwing strikes,” coach Kyle Dennis said. “He pitched out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the first and didn’t allow a run and also another bases loaded jam in the third.
“He is a great competitor, and his performance kept hitters off balance. He has the ability to move all his pitches, and when they are on, he is very frustrating to hit off of. I was very proud of his performance today.
Pat Reilly (2-for-3, home run, three RBIs, two runs) had a big day at the plate for the Patriots, who scored three runs in the first and added three more in the second. Jake Warren was 2-for-2 with a double and two runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Brian McDonnell was 1-for-3 with a double and RBI.
The Golden Hawks, who held an 8-7 advantage in hits, were led by the 3-for-4 effort of junior Dan Obarowski, who doubled and drove in a pair. Zak Hepburn delivered a solo home run.
Perry Cohen absorbed the loss for the Golden Hawks (11-5).
The Patriots are 8-7 overall.
