Fans of long-range shooting had to love Friday’s fifth place game as the two teams combined for 21 3-pointers with East burying 12 shots from beyond the arc.
The Patriots won all four quarters over the visiting Royals.
“It was a good win,” East coach Erik Henrysen said. “Upper Darby is a team that beat a lot of good teams this year. When it comes down to it, you’re playing in these playback games that come down to how are the guys going to respond to playing in ‘consolation’ games.
“I’m happy with the way we came out – more so in the second half when we got things going.”
The Patriots, who led 12-10 after one quarter, took a 28-24 lead into halftime and outscored their visitors 39-30 in the second half.
“We felt like we didn’t move the ball all that well in the first half,” Henrysen said. “The second half we moved the ball better, and we found ourselves with really good shots where we were taking uncontested 3s. We ended up going for nine 3s in the second half, and they were all really, really good shots.”
Three players finished in double figures. Jacob Cummmiskey led the way with 17 points, which included three 3-pointers, and Kyle Berndt added 16 points, connecting on four 3s. Justin DiRoberto added 11 points with a pair of 3s.
“Joey Giordano creating and Jake Cummiskey and Kyle Berndt – that’s kind of what we’ve come to expect,” Henrysen said. “Justin DiRoberto hasn’t been satisfied with the way he’s played, and he came through for us in a big way tonight as he did for most of the beginning of the season, so it was nice to see him get going.”
Also for the Patriots, Tyler Dandrea added seven points while Giordano and Dhruv Mukund both had six points. Mukund had a pair of 3s.
The Patriots head into the state tournament with back-to-back wins under their belts and three wins in four playback games.
“I don’t think we have that in us in our program to say – let’s go out and worry about matchups for states,” Henrysen said. “We approach every game the same – roll out the balls and try and win the game.”
Central Bucks East (24-5, 14-2 SOL) will face Archbishop Wood, District 12’s third place team, in Friday’s opening round of the PIAA 6A Tournament.
