Hatboro-Horsham 51, Upper Moreland 42
Five games into this young 2013-14 season, it’s pretty evident who Hatboro-Horsham’s MVP has been thus far.
Zach Quattro, who has been the Hatters’ best offensive player by far this season, followed up a 24-point performance with a 26-point game in a 51-42 win over Upper Moreland in a game played at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia on Friday afternoon.
In the first ever high school games played at the WFC before a 76ers game (the Hatboro-Horsham ladies took on Upper Moreland in the earlier game), Quattro ended up with 17 of his team’s 22 first half points as the Hatters opened up a 22-19 lead.
“Zach is just incredible,” Hatboro-Horsham coach Dennis Steinly said.  “We rely on him so much for scoring and offensively, and he continues to put up numbers.  His shooting percentage is not what it was last year, but I think that will get better and I think once he finds a rhythm, we’ll be able to look for him exclusively to get us going.”
The two teams played a fairly even opening half and third quarter, but a buzzer-beating shot by Billy Metzgar at the end of the third put the Hatters on top 37-35.  The went on to outscore the Golden Bears 15-7 in the final quarter.
“I think the momentum from that buzzer-beater carried over into the fourth,” Steinly said.  “We put the game away in the fourth quarter.”
The Hatters trailed after one quarter 12-9 but took a three-point advantage into the locker room.  They outscored the Bears by eight in the fourth.  Metzgar finished with seven points for Hatboro-Horsham, while Walt Kimble, who played excellent on both sides of the floor according to Steinly, finished with eight.
The Bears were led by Kevin McFall’s 14 points.  Chris Corr added nine.
Regarding playing inside a 20,000-plus person arena and on an NBA floor, Steinly said his team was extremely excited.
“I think they all had a great time and it was amazing.  It really was,” he said.  “It was a great experience and I think everybody enjoyed it.  It was a struggle early because of the environment and of course the court is different with the NBA three-point line throwing guys off, but once we settled in, we were good.”
The Hatters upped their record to 4-1 (2-0 SOL) while the Golden Bears fell to 2-3 (1-2).

Council Rock North 55, Truman 29
Council Rock North’s defense was on full display from the very start, holding visiting Truman to only 29 points in a 26-point win on Friday night.
Steve Nowmos had a very strong defensive night, while the guard trio of Chris Rowland, Josh McWilliams and Matt Margolis all played well covering the perimeter to help North to its first league win of the season.
“It was a big win, especially after the fact that we lost a home league game last Friday,” CR North coach Derek Wright said.  “You want to take advantage of those types of games, so to get one back tonight was really important.
“We played excellent overall team defense tonight, and we executed our game plan and rebounded the ball very well, and it set a nice tone to start the game and carried throughout.  Steve did a nice job of guarding the post, and our guards did a great job of coming in from the perimeter to rebound the ball very nicely.”
Offensively, Rowland led the way with 16 points.  Nowmos and Will DeSautelle each added eight, while McWilliams tallied nine.
“We just distributed the ball well and had a good overall balance,” Wright said. “Offense always looks good when you make shots and we did tonight.”
Rock North and Truman are both 1-2 in league play.

Plymouth Whitemarsh 69, Wissahickon 56
Thanks in large part to junior guard Jimmy Murray, Plymouth Whitemarsh can now say that it is the only remaining team (out of eight) to still be undefeated in conference play.
Murray scored 27 points and added three rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots while leading the Colonials to a 69-56 win over Wissahickon at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School on Friday night.
Despite trailing 17-7 after one quarter of play, PW (4-1, 3-0) game roaring back, and led by two at the half.  In the fourth, Murray got hot, scoring 11 points in the fourth quarter.
“This is a big win for us,” Murray said.  “Wissahickon is a very good team, but we just came out on top.”
The win dropped the Trojans to 3-2 overall and one 2-1 in league play, while leaving PW all alone in first place.
“After the first quarter, I just said, ‘It’s a long game.’  We just scored 85 points the other night,” PW coach Jim Donofrio said.  “Offensively, we don’t really need to get on guys.  You maybe make a few adjustments, but you have to stay confident and keep them loose.  Just believe a bit.”
Murray proved to Donofrio that he could believe in him, making nearly every shot he took in the final quarter when the two teams were still only separated by one possession.
Junior Andre Mitchell finished with 20 points and five assists for the Colonials, while TJ Minetola played solid defense, blocking three shots while bringing down eight rebounds.  Brett Paul finished with 11 points.
“Right now, it’s important to get the win,” Donofrio said.  “To be on an early roll is nice, but I’m actually trying to figure out where we are with confidence in big games.  That’s what I like about us the most.”

Cheltenham 52, Upper Dublin 41
CHELTENHAM WITHSTANDS LATE COMEBACK BID TO BEAT UPPER DUBLIN
By Jesse Bernstein for SuburbanOneSports.com
The way Cheltenham coach John Timms talked about his team, you’d have thought they’d lost.
“We’re immature,” said Timms. “In the fourth quarter, our inexperience shows.”
While the Panthers almost did cough up a lead that grew to as large as 13, they showed remarkable composure in withstanding a furious Cardinal comeback, winning 52-41 at Upper Dublin on Friday night.
Cheltenham’s pressing defense and superior athletes clearly caught Upper Dublin by surprise, as Cheltenham was able to hold their opponents to just 11 points in the first half, shutting down Upper Dublin’s star sophomore forward Simeon Fryer (in his first game back from a concussion). Khalil White stroked three 3’s in the first half and would finish with 11 to lead the Panthers.
Fryer came flying out of the gate in the second half, scoring seven of Upper Dublin’s 11 points in the third quarter, helping to cut the lead to 10 (32-22).  The crowd was back into it, calls started going in Upper Dublin’s favor, and it seemed as though the Panthers were simply overmatched.
Senior forward Aaron Burton had some second thoughts on that, and, buoyed by his 6 points, all from the line, Cheltenham exploded for 20 points in the fourth quarter, never letting the lead grow smaller than three.
Fryer, who led Upper Dublin with 16 points, threw down a one-handed slam in traffic that had everyone in the gym on their feet. However, a crucial carrying call with 1:04 to go that was followed by a quick Cheltenham layup sealed Upper Dublin’s fate, and the Cardinals could only foul and hope for a few misses for the last minute.
“We’re still learning how to close games,” Timms said. “If they continue to close like they did tonight, they’re going to be just fine.
Cheltenham improves to 2-4, while Upper Dublin drops to 2-2.
