PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 73, POPE JOHN XIII 57
The Colonials closed out a perfect December with a no-doubt-about it win over Pope John XIII in the Jameer/Pete Nelson Classic at Widener University.
“This is one of those games when you look back at the season – it’s one of those marker games,” coach Jim Donofrio said. “We played well enough to beat Pennsbury at one o’clock in the afternoon after a Friday night game, and I thought that was pretty impressive for high school kids to do.
“Here we go with an 8:45 game last night against Friends Central with De’Andre Hunter, who’s a big-time player going to Virginia. You get home at 11:45 at night, and you’re playing today at three o’clock in the afternoon – two high level games. It was really a nice early moment for us of advancing. We’re just advancing after this game.”
Senior Xzavier Malone led the way with a remarkable triple-double, finishing with 14 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds. Mike Lotito – named game MVP – added 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
“We were led by the seniors mostly,” Donofrio said. “We had talked earlier this season - can the other guys step up around Malone so we can be multi-faceted, and that was what today and yesterday were about.
“Davon Burrell (seven points) Kevin Ashenfelter (eight points), and Mike Lotito is starting to really play like a senior veteran kid. The thing is they’re scoring, and I think it takes a while if you’ve never done it before. It takes Xzavier Malone saying, ‘I’m going to help you do that.’ When he starts believing in his teammates and they give it back to him knowing he’s going to be a key force, then you’re going to be a good high school team.”
Oakley Spencer added 12 points and Grady Minick, eight, as nine players contributed points – including six with eight or more points. It was more than enough to earn the convincing win.
“They were young, but two 6-8 guys on the wing are still 6-8 guys on the wing,” Donofrio said of Pope John XXIII. “I was able to drive up and watch them play at St. Anthony’s on Sunday night, and they’re not playing light competition.
“It was a very veteran, mature performance by our team today to basically play 10 guys and yet there’s more of the coming together.
The Colonials, who led 16-14 after one quarter, took a 35-28 lead into halftime and then put the game out of reach with a 21-10 third quarter.
