UPPER DUBLIN 59, NORTH PENN 39
By Mike Prince
When you get balanced scoring and a solid defensive effort, things generally go your way.
Upper Dublin got both on Friday night, helping the Cardinals to an 11-0 run to start the game and a 16-point first half lead in the season opener for both squads.
In the end, the all-around effort gave the Cardinals a 59-39 win over the Knights in the second game of Upper Dublin’s boys’ basketball Cardinal Classic Tournament at Upper Dublin High School.
The Cardinals were led by Marc Conran, who finished with 14 points, while Zach Greenberg and Kevin Woods added 13 and 12, respectively.
“Our scoring was great tonight,” coach Josh Adelman said.  “We had guys who stepped up and played great.  We had guys like Kevin (Woods) doing things, whether he was scoring or giving it to Ryan Stover or (Zach) Greenberg.  Our balanced scoring was tremendous today.”
Upper Dublin’s defense was superb as well, holding North Penn to only 25 points through the opening three quarters.
After the 11-0 run to open the game, Upper Dublin continued to build on its lead, putting up 16 points in the second quarter to capture a 29-14 halftime lead.  In the third, the Cardinals continued their balanced scoring effort, increasing their lead to 17 after 24 minutes of play.
Upper Dublin closed things out with a 17-point fourth quarter to run away with the 20-point victory.
“It was just a great effort,” Adelman said.  “We really came out as a team and played tremendous team basketball and I think we really owned the boards, which was great.  We had opportunities to push the ball down the floor and get some easy baskets and with that came confidence.”
North Penn (0-1, 0-0) was led by senior Jason Jones, who finished with nine points.  Senior Noah Melchior added six, while Aaron Dean and Joseph Richards each tallied five.
Upper Dublin (1-0, 0-0), which will now prepare for a home meeting with Conestoga in the tournament’s championship game on Saturday night, also received six points from Matt Thompson and five apiece from John Barrett and Ryan Stover.
North Penn will have to go back to the drawing board and try to figure out what went wrong on Friday night.
“Well, if the kids weren’t ready, that’s on me,” North Penn coach John Conrad said.  “They weren’t ready, so that’s on me.  We certainly got outworked, but as I said, we didn’t have them ready to play earlier and that starts with us.”
North Penn (39) – Melchior 3 0-0 6; Jones 3 0-0 9; Coleman 1 3-4 5; Dean 1 2-2 4; Hakim 1 0-3 5; Richards 1 3-4 5; Lim 1 2-3 4; Shue 1 0-0 2; Lord 1 0-1 2. Totals: 13 10-17 39.

ABINGTON 64, WEST CHESTER HENDERSON 48
Abington clamps down on the Warriors in victory
By Jesse Bernstein for SuburbanOneSports.com
In the Galloping Ghosts’ season opener, senior Amir Hinton’s 20 points and junior Lazaros Mackrides’ stellar interior defense were the keys in shutting down West Chester Henderson.
Hinton’s 20 led all scorers. For Abington, junior guard Matt Penecale added 13 points and a bevy of slick passes, Mackrides finished the game with 11 points, and sophomore guard Jordan Neely added eight of his own.
The first half was sloppy but tight, and each time the Ghosts seemed like they were about to pull away, Henderson turned to their leaders, senior Mark DiMatteo and junior Colin Costello. They finished the half with 13 points between them, and Abington led only 26-22 at the break.
While his defensive presence would be more noticeable throughout the game, Mackrides did pour in a quick six first quarter points. On Mackrides’ defense, Abington coach Charles Grasty said, “That’s what we expect from Laz. That’s what he’ll do, he’ll extend the floor for us, he’ll knock down some shots.”
The third quarter was a nightmare for Henderson, as they were outscored 17-7. Penecale scored six points in the quarter, and Mackrides sent three shots flying away from the rim, eliciting big cheers from the crowd.
The fourth quarter featured a parade of subs for both teams, and Abington took the first round game of their annual Ghost Tip-Off Classic, advancing to Saturday’s championship game against Wissahickon at 4 pm.
