SOL Boys' Lacrosse Wrap (4-22-14)

Check out the results for SOL boys’ lacrosse teams in action Tuesday.

Pennsbury 6, Neshaminy 5
Pennsbury has lost several close games this year.  After a one-goal loss to Central Bucks West, two-goal defeats at the hands of Council Rock North, Souderton and Nazareth and a hard-fought loss against Abington, the Falcons have just had trouble playing a full 48 minutes.
So when the Falcons were able to get past their top rival by only one goal on Tuesday afternoon, it made Pennsbury coach Jamie Huber that much more satisfied with the win.
“It’s been a very interesting season,” he said, “but it was good to beat our rival today and now we know that we can win as a team and not have to rely on one man.”
With their third-string goalie in net – a player who only had one previous game of varsity experience before Tuesday – Pennsbury was able to get past the Redskins, 6-5, in a conference meeting at Neshaminy High School.
The Falcons, who now sit at 3-8 overall and 2-3 in conference play, played keep away in the final minute of regulation to hang on for the one-goal victory.
“We played very confident and have been in every game, but haven’t been able to win much,” Huber said.  “To beat your rival with goaltending issues and for your team to pull together was great.  Our defense basically dictated where the shots were going.”
With Pennsbury’s starting goalie out since last Friday with a broken thumb, and its backup goaltender not eligible to play on Tuesday after missing the last week or practice with an illness, in stepped junior Ryan Fuller, who was the JV goalie just last week.
Fuller stopped 11 shots while helping the Falcons to the win.
“Ryan came in last Friday and he was big today,” Huber said.  “I’d like to believe that this kind of win will help us to propel forward, but we’re just taking it one game at a time.”
In the win, Pennsbury was led by Jared Petty, who scored two goals and added an assist.  Greg Kolowajtis, Lyle Arvanites, John Conte and Matt Anderson all scored goals for Pennsbury, which outshot the Redskins (0-3 National Conference) 30-18.  Arvanites helped the Falcons by winning 60 percent of his faceoffs.  Pennsbury scored twice in the first quarter and led 2-1 before taking a one-goal lead (4-3) into the fourth quarter.
Pennsbury led by two goals with three minutes remaining before Neshaminy cut its deficit to one goal.  The Falcons were then called for a penalty, but killed the Redskins’ man advantage and after getting a turnover in the offensive zone, were able to sit on the ball until the final seconds.
“Our record doesn’t reflect the kind of team we are,” Huber said.  “I look at the teams that are ranked ahead of us with better records and it’s unfortunate because we’ve been in almost every game and we played a relatively challenging schedule.  I don’t know what kind of momentum this game is going to provide us for the whole season, but we have a very tough slate ahead of us.  We don’t get many breaks from here on out.  Out record doesn’t show it, but I think we’re capable of beating the top-level teams.  We just haven’t put a full game together.”
In the loss, Neshaminy was led by Matt Magdelinskas, who scored two goals and added two assists.  Cale Kitchenman, David Knuckles and Kevin Goetz each scored one goal for the Redskins, while Dan Dogba stopped seven shots in net in the losing effort.

Abington – Council Rock North
Abington and Council Rock North had their National Conference meeting postponed on Tuesday afternoon due to the threat of poor weather conditions.  The game will be made up Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Abington High School.

Central Bucks East 9, Central Bucks West 5
Ryan Brown scored four goals to lead East’s attack in Tuesday’ battle between the neighboring rivals. Matt Milici added two goals and two assists while Matt Schmidt, Dave Gressgott and Matt Brown each scored single goals. Matt Vetter had three assists.
Dustin Buchanan led East’s defense with eight ground balls. Andrew DelBrocco won 9-of-16 face-offs. Goalie Sean McGovern was credited with 11 saves.
For the Bucks, Jimmy Sykot had a pair of goals, and Kevin Ernst, Clark Hanes and Grant Udiinski each had one goal. Reece Udinski had one assist. Goalie Mike Harvin was credited with 10 saves.

Upper Dublin 19, Norristown 0
Upper Dublin scored 11 goals in the first and cruised to a 19-goal shutout victory over host Norristown on Tuesday afternoon.  Michael Sowers led the Cardinals with three goals and six assists, while Evan Scott added four goals and four assists.
The Cardinals, who scored five times in the second quarter before pulling their starters for the second half, also got five goals from Michael Mullen and three apiece from Ryan Siwinski and Sanjay Foster.  Bobby McPeake started in net for Upper Dublin, stopping one shot to earn the win.

The Cardinals improved to 9-0 in conference play with the win, while Norristown dropped to 1-9.

Upper Moreland 9, Upper Merion 6
Upper Moreland improved to 5-3 in American Conference play with a three-goal win over Upper Merion on Tuesday afternoon.  With the loss, the Vikings dropped to 4-4 in conference play.

Jack Myers and Noah Katz stopped five and four shots, respectively, while splitting time in net for Wissahickon.
Springfield was led by Ben Wiley’s four goals and Brendan Doyle’s two.  The Spartans dropped to 4-5 in conference play with the loss.

Council Rock South 17, Harry S. Truman 0

The win improved the Golden Hawks’ conference record to 3-1, while dropping Truman to 0-4.

Pennridge 19, New Hope-Solebury 14

The two teams battled to a 6-6 tie after a high-scoring first quarter, but the Rams, who took a 10-8 lead into halftime, outscored the Lions 13-8 the rest of the way.
The Rams were led by Blake Schoenmeier and Sean Fechter, who recorded four goals and five assists apiece.  Ethan Clemmer added four goals and three assists, while Kyle Fanelli scored three times.
