National Conference

NESHAMINY 5, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 0

It is the final week of the regular season, and the top teams in the SOL are looking for both conference titles and more points to earn a higher seed for the District I Class AAAA playoffs.
That would make for an easier road for squads like Neshaminy, which is closing in on the SOL National crown. Only Bensalem can catch the Redskins at this point, and on Monday afternoon, they made that quest even tougher, thanks to a 5-0 drubbing of visiting CR North.
“After a slow start, we put together a really nice team effort,” said coach Tom Foley.
Like many local teams, the Redskins were the beneficiaries of momentum from a late first half goal. Bobby Lutz made it happen with a pass that got to Zach Rider, who did the rest with a scoring shot that made it 2-0 at intermission.
Before that, Neshaminy had been looking for a second strike for over 25 minutes, as Nick Tucci set up Dylan McDonald for an early go-ahead goal.
As it turned out, those tallies were enough to get the job done against the Indians, but more was to come in the second half. Nick Tucci added to his good offensive year with the third goal. Then, Hunter Jackson found the back of the net twice to cap the scoring. He added an assist off a crossing pass to lead the Redskins in the scoring department, while James McCourt and Tucci added assists.
Neshaminy moved to 9-0-3 in the league and remains undefeated this year overall. The Redskins next play Pennsbury Wednesday and can clinch at least a share of the league title with a victory.

WILLIAM TENNENT 5, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 2
The Panthers got the breakthrough they needed on Monday afternoon during their visit to CR South. After playing to a 2-2 stalemate in the first half, the Panthers scored three unanswered tallies in the final 40 minutes to put away the Golden Hawks.
The victory ended Tennent’s two game winless slide and improved it to 6-4-2 in the SOL National. At 14 points, that is good for sole possession of fourth place with two games to go.
“I was pleased with how we responded in the second half,” said Panthers coach Luke Gibson. “Our attack was much more fluid, and we were very clinical in our finishing.”
The Panthers have enjoyed a great season from Johnny Ciarlante, and this match was more of the same. He popped in a pair of goals and added an assist in the victory. Tony Ciarlante was again solid, too, as he assisted on one and scored twice, including the game winner and the insurance shot that made it 4-2.
The Panthers also saw Bryan Note contribute to the tune of a goal and two assists, while J.R. McCabe had a solid afternoon that included an assist.
The Hawks dropped to 3-7-2 in the league with the setback.

BENSALEM 2, TRUMAN 1 (OT)
While Neshaminy remains in the driver’s seat, Bensalem remains in outside contention for the SOL National crown. Any title aspirations they may have had were in jeopardy at Truman Monday night, but eventually, the Owls prevailed in a 2-1 triumph that took a sudden death overtime session to determine a winner.
A familiar name made the difference for the Owls. Forward Chris Juergenson took a pass from midfielder Omar Luvigno and buried the clinching, “golden goal” about five minutes into the first overtime. Prior to that, Bensalem grabbed the early advantage off a goal by forward Brian Kilcoyne, but it was answered on a 40-yard connecting shot by the Tigers to tie things up.
“It was a tough game for us, and we stuck with it and kept pressing it and eventually got what we needed,” said Owls coach Joe Leone.
The Owls, who outshot Truman by a 14-6 margin, also had solid performances from midfielders Elan Fingles and Jack Lee. The former had an assist to help Bensalem improve to 9-3 in the SOL National. It can clinch second place with a win over Abington Wednesday.

PENNSBURY 4, ABINGTON 3 (2 OT)
For Pennsbury, a younger face came through on Monday night at Abington.
The Falcons were two minutes from a draw with the Ghosts when freshman Zach Lobasso got an opportunity. He seized it in a big way, burying a shot past the Abington keeper to seal a 4-3 victory and keep the Falcons in third place by themselves in the SOL National.
“The team showed great character,” said Falcons coach Tom Stoddart. “(It was) great preparation for playoffs.”
Pennsbury was in danger of falling in this one after the Ghosts struck three times in the opening 13 minutes of the second half. With five minutes remaining in regulation, though, Doug Chapuis evened things up with his only goal of the night.
Also helping the Falcons cause was Connor Waters, who scored both goals prior in the first half. Both Keon Randolph and Greg Stam assisted his tallies.

Abington dropped to 4-7-2 in the SOL National with the loss, while the Falcons jumped to 7-4-1.

NORTH PENN 2, CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 1
It was a showdown for separation, and North Penn was up to the challenge.
After back-to-back setbacks to CB South and CB East threatened to derail their chances at a league title, the Knights hosted CB West Monday afternoon with second place on the line. Two first half goals were enough for the Knights strong defense as North Penn held on for a 2-1 triumph.
“It was a very well-played game,” said North Penn coach Paul Duddy. “I thought we had the better of it for a while, but CB West put the pressure on us.”
“So, it’s a big three points both ways,” he continued.
It was also a great day for the defense, which has still not allowed any opponents to score more than two goals in a game this year. Taking care of the left side in this one was Nick Miller, while fellow defenders Drew McMenamin and Tim Langton manned the center positions.
“I think our defenders played very well and limited their opportunities,” Duddy said.
McMenamin has also been a factor offensively this year, but against the Bucks, it was right side defender Milan Szilagyi’s turn to do that. He found striker Dylan McMahon for the eventual game-winning goal in the opening 40 minutes.
The other Knights tally came from Kevin McKenna, who scored off a feed from Rob Terchek.
The Bucks had some chances, but Alan Vernon took care of North Penn’s net, pulling in eight saves to get the win.
“He just made a couple of outstanding saves,” complimented Duddy.
The win gives North Penn 26 points at 9-2-2 in the league. If the Knights can win at Pennridge Wednesday night, they will clinch at least second place and could even have a chance at catching CB East depending on their league finale with CB South.
“They always play us just extremely tough,” Duddy said of Pennridge.
CB West fell to 7-3-3 in the SOL Continental with the loss, but will wrap up no worse than third place with a victory Wednesday against Hatboro-Horsham.

HATBORO-HORSHAM 4, QUAKERTOWN 0
The Hatters may be just 4-8-1 in league action, but they are at least in position for a huge opportunity on Wednesday.
The Hatters will host CB West that afternoon, and if they can pull off a victory, they will finish no worse than fifth in the strong SOL Continental. That could be enough to make a postseason bid, a hope the Hatters kept alive thanks to a 4-0 home win over Quakertown Monday night.
“If we can maybe steal a win against a good West team, we might be able to sneak in,” said Hatboro-Horsham coach Kyle McGrath. “It might be a bit of a long shot, but if we win, we could be in the conversation.”
At 6-9-2 overall, Hatboro-Horsham has already wrapped up a better mark than it had in 2012, when the Hatters were breaking in several younger players. The experience has helped them hang tough down the stretch this year. They stayed with CB South before falling 2-1 and tied Pennridge within the last week.
The Hatters needed a win, though, and got it thanks to a strong defensive performance to go with a big night for Andrew Tice. He scored the last two tallies as Hatboro-Horsham added some insurance to put away the Panthers, who fell to 2-10 in the league with the loss.
Center back Dante D’Alonzo helped lead the defense in the shutout despite being out of his normal position in the midfield. He also had an assist, as did Chris Hobbs, who scored the second Hatter goal.
“He played well in the back tonight,” McGrath said.
The game winner came from Kyle Parkinson, while Brian Ehlich stopped four Panther shots in net.
“Regardless of who they’re playing and what they’re situation is, they go into battle and give their all every game,” praised McGrath of his team.

SOUDERTON 2, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 0
Souderton may have something to say about the Hatters’ fifth place aspirations. Needing a win themselves Monday night at home against CB South, the Indians earned what was arguably their biggest victory of the year in a 2-0 upset.
The win snapped a six-game unbeaten streak for the Titans, who had given up only two goals in that span and climbed into fourth place in the process. After a scoreless opening half, the Indians struck two minutes into the second half thanks to Tyler Eckardt. Six minutes later, a second goal came, this time following an earned penalty kick that Nick Stulb put home for some breathing room.
Tylor Strozeski added an assist in the win, which bumped the Indians to 4-8-1 on the year in league play and into a tie with Hatboro-Horsham for fifth. They will travel to Quakertown Wednesday night for a potentially huge match with the Panthers.
CB South, meanwhile, stands at 7-5-1 in the SOL Continental.

CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3, PENNRIDGE 2 (OT)
The Patriots picked up their ninth consecutive win in league play, but this one was anything but easy. East won it when Kyle Clow scored the ‘golden goal’ with 19 seconds remaining in the first overtime.
“Pennridge played very well,” East coach Mike Gorni said. “They did a great job.
“We’re playing for first place and to win the league, and they – of the next five (teams) – were one point ahead, and they’re fighting to keep any playoff chances alive, and you could tell that effort was there on their part tonight. Give them a lot of credit.”
The Rams took a 1-0 lead into halftime, thanks to a goal by Ethan Aigeldinger midway through the opening half. East’s Evan Vare (Ryan Gleason assist) connected for the equalizer 13 minutes into the second half, but the Rams had an answer as Justin Csaszar (Henry Savage assist) scored on a laser shot from 25 yards out to put his team back on top 2-1.
With eight minutes remaining in regulation, Evan Vare knotted the score with his second goal of the game, this time using a Ryan Vare assist.
That set the stage for an exciting OT period and Clow’s game winner.
“Ryan Vare served it in, Evan Vare played it back, and Kyle Clow hit a scorcher from about 14 yards out through a lot of bodies for the game winner,” Gorni said.
The Patriots upped their league mark to 10-2 (12-3 overall) with two games remaining in the regular season. They will travel to Central Bucks South on Wednesday night and close out league play with a game against Quakertown on Friday afternoon. One win in the next two games will give the Patriots sole possession of first place. The Rams fell to 3-8-2 in league play (6-9-2 overall).

American Conference

PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 2, UPPER DUBLIN 0
It was a game with first place on the line, and once again, the Plymouth Whitemarsh defense was up to the challenge.
Earlier in the season, the Colonials let a two-goal advantage against Upper Dublin slip away in the second half and wound up falling by a 3-2 score. It was the most goals the Colonials have yielded in any game so far, and since then, they had pitched five shutouts and allowed only four goals in eight games.
The tables turned this time, though, as the Colonials again built a 2-0 edge by the break, but this time, they did not allow the Cardinals to get closer. The result was a shutout victory that vaulted the Colonials into first place at 12-1 in the SOL American. It puts them a win or tie against Springfield (Montco) Wednesday away from wrapping up the league title.
The hero of the night was Austin Betterly, who scored both goals for the Colonials. Earning assists were Dylan Ensslin and Kenny Almack, while keeper Brett Paul stopped six Upper Dublin shots.
The Cardinals could still tie for first, but will need to beat Upper Merion on Wednesday and get some help from Springfield.

UPPER MERION 3, CHELTENHAM 2 (2 OT)
Upper Merion took a big step toward a potential postseason berth Monday night with a 3-2, double overtime triumph over Cheltenham.
Despite playing a man short for approximately 60 minutes of regulation, the Vikings held strong and managed to force an extra session against the Panthers, who fell to 3-9 in SOL American action with the loss.
After neither team could get a deciding goal in the first overtime, Upper Merion finally broke through with three minutes remaining in the second frame. After earning a free kick, Brendan Steiner struck a ball from 35 yards away that beat the Panthers keeper for the winner.
“Brendon Magdamo had an excellent game in goal,” praised Upper Merion coach Tom Dodds of his keeper. “George Dhima, Alan Castillo and Tyler Roberts played well for the Vikings.”
Prior to Steiner’s heroics, Abdu Bakillah connected twice for the Vikings, who are now 7-5 in the league. Two challenge matches remain, though, with Wissahickon and Upper Dublin coming to town Tuesday and Wednesday.

SPRINGFIELD (MONTCO) 2, UPPER MORELAND 1
Make it two of three for the Spartans, who held off a challenge from Upper Moreland in a 2-1 road win. Springfield is now 4-9 in the SOL American and 4-12 overall on the year, and with 12 points, the Spartans are in position for fifth place at year’s end.
The game winner came from Igor McVeagh, who connected on a penalty kick to give the Spartans their final tally. The other came from Riley Woron, who was set up by Corey Cottone to get the offense going.
The Golden Bears’ Tyler Klinert scored the only goal for his squad, which dropped to 1-11 in league play and next face Cheltenham Tuesday.

WISSAHICKON 5, NORRISTOWN 0
The Trojans remain in third place in the SOL American and flexed their muscles in doing so Monday with a 5-0 home win over Norristown.
All of the tallies were scored by different players for the Trojans, who are now 8-4 in the league. Just four minutes in, Ryan Becker, who also had an assist, popped in the eventual game winner.
Nine minutes later, Sam Hunt made it 2-0, and late in the opening half, Devon Memis scored to help the Trojans take a 3-0 edge into intermission.
Tommy McHale and Alex Tappen added goals of their own to cap the scoring, while Cole Kropnick and Alex Chiodo-Ortiz had assists. The Trojans sent 24 shots at Eagles keepers, while Neal Guaglianone and John Carrozza combined for the shutout.
