SOL Boys' Soccer Wrap (10-9-13)

Check out the results for SOL boys’ soccer teams in action Wednesday.

American Conference

WISSAHICKON 2, CHELTENHAM 0
While two teams still ahead of the Trojans in the conference standings, Wissahickon has not completely lost touch with its quest to win a share of the SOL American crown.
The Trojans suffered a blow on Tuesday when Plymouth Whitemarsh rallied to defeat them. Any potential hangover, however, was erased Wednesday, when two goals were more than enough to help the Trojans improve to 7-4 in league play.
At 21 points, they would need help but could conceivably still end up tied in points with either, or both, Plymouth-Whitemarsh and Upper Dublin.
“After a tough loss the day before, it was good to respond today with a win,” said Wissahickon coach Stuart Malcolm.
Just 10 minutes in, Shane Fallen scored the game winner while Sam Hunt added insurance with about three minutes to go in regulation.
“(We) took the lead with a well taken goal from outside the area from Shane Fallen,” Malcolm said. “(We) continued to apply pressure on the Panthers defense, but could only manage one goal in the half.
“The second half both teams traded scoring opportunities, but Wissahickon managed to seal the game with a well-worked free kick and a header from Sam Hunt two minutes from time.”
Neal Guaglianone stopped three shots to preserve the shutout. Cheltenham is now3-7 in league play.

PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 3, UPPER MERION 0
Finishing is critical in soccer.
For the second straight day, Plymouth Whitemarsh went into halftime in search of its first goal. Against Wissahickon Tuesday, the Colonials were trailing only to come back and win by a 2-1 score.
This time around against Upper Merion, the Colonials were locked in a scoreless tie. They put together an outstanding second half to pull away for a 3-0 victory. The shutout was the eighth of the season for coach Devon Landgraff’s squad, which is now 10-1 in the SOL American and tied for first in points with Upper Dublin.
Two goals came as a direct result of whistles against Upper Merion. Alex Bilodeau connected on a penalty kick while Conor Moore earned a direct free kick and buried a shot past the Vikings keeper from 20 yards away. The other tally came on a shot from Austin Betterly, who scored off a setup by Dominic Wlodarczyk.
In goal, Brett Paul stopped five Viking shots to earn the win. Upper Merion is now 7-4 in the league.

SPRINGFIELD (MONTCO) 2, NORRISTOWN 1 (OT)
The Eagles were seeking their fourth win in six tries when Springfield (Montco) trekked to town Wednesday afternoon. What transpired was a tight battle but one that Springfield was able to take thanks to a “golden” goal in overtime.
Riley Woron was the difference maker for the Spartans, who improved to 3-11 overall and 3-8 in league action with the victory. He scored both tallies for Springfield, one of which came in the second half and the other to clinch the win in overtime. Earning assists for the Spartans were Corey Cottone and Igor McVeagh.
Norristown slipped to 5-10 on the season with the loss. Its goal also came in the second half off a shot by Shane Hammer.

UPPER DUBLIN 6, UPPER MORELAND 0
Early and late goals can be very damaging in soccer. If both occur together, though, it can be even more disastrous. Such was the case for Upper Moreland Wednesday.
Upper Dublin paid its annual visit, and in the first minute got on the board when Alex Browndorf set up Andy Quan. The Cardinals didn’t score again until less than a minute remained in the first half when Alex Demchick found Louis Mayers for a goal that made it 2-0 at the intermission.
Upper Dublin again wasted little time before striking in the second half as Zach Arnold found the back of the net on a shot assisted by Glenn VanOrden in the opening minute. Eight minutes later, Arnold was back at it again, connecting for a goal that was set up by Josh Franklin. Louis Mayers used a Ray Flacco assist to score the fifth goal in the 68th minute. The Cardinals capped things when Nick Browndorf scored on a shot assisted by Justin Greene with a minute to play. Scott Wexler and Charlie VanOrden combined for the shutout. Bobby Dell and Connor O’Hagan combined for eight saves in the losing effort. The Cardinals improved to 10-0 in the American Conference while the Golden Bears fell to 1-10 in league play.

National Conference

PENNSBURY 4, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 1
It’s always good to be playing your best down the stretch.
Perhaps that will be the case for Pennsbury this season. After losing four straight between Sept. 26 and Oct. 3, the Falcons appeared to be grounded. In two games since, they have outscored opponents by a combined 7-1 margin, including a 4-1 road drubbing of CR North Wednesday.
“The game is easier when we finish our opportunities,” Falcons coach Tom Stoddard said. “We are beginning to play with a good rhythm.”
His team improved to 5-4-1 in the SOL National with the win and is tied for second with 16 points.
Charlie Rushing had a pair of goals to lead the way offensively for the Falcons while Connor Waters added two assists. The other Falcon tallies came from Zach Labosso and Keon Randolph.
The Indians are now 4-7 in league play after the loss.

NESHAMINY 2, WILLIAM TENNENT 1
The Redskins scored both of their tallies in the opening 40 minutes and never relinquished their advantage. Eric Schaefer (Nick Tucci assist) put the 'Skins on the scoreboard in the 25th minute, and nine minutes late, Hunter Jackson connected, using a Schaefer assist.
A Jay Essig first half goal was all the Panthers could muster in the home setback.
“It was a disappointing result for our group, and collectively, they feel as if they missed an opportunity to grab points,” Panthers coach Luke Gibson said.
Neshaminy improved to 11-0-2 with the win and is undefeated at 8-0-2 in the SOL National. Tennen dropped to 7-5-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the league.

William Tennent         1          0          1

BENSALEM 3, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 2 (OT)
The Owls came into their home tilt with CR South in need of a win following a 2-0 setback at the hands of still undefeated Neshaminy Oct. 3. Bensalem got what they needed, and in dramatic fashion at that as the Owls tied things up late in regulation before Brian Kilcoyne netted the game winner in overtime.
Bensalem came back twice in this contest, the second of which came with five minutes remaining on a shot by Jimmy McDowell set up by Alex Rosenfeld. The game winner was also assisted by McDowell, while Kilcoyne originally evened the score at one on a penalty kick.

Nick Murphy and Ethan Benedict scored for the Golden Hawks, who fell to 3-5-2 in the SOL National with the setback. Bensalem improved to 7-3 and remains in second place after the triumph.

ABINGTON 4, TRUMAN 2
Juan Castillo and Matt Bachman each scored a pair of goals to lead the Ghosts to the win. Rashard Gayle and Patrick Smith scored for Truman, which went into the half tied with Abington 1-1. That wasn’t enough to overcome a three-goal burst by the Ghosts in the second half to help Abington to a 4-2 home victory.
Truman is now 2-9 in the SOL National, while Abington improved to 4-6 and snapped a four-game losing skid.

Continental Conference

CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 2, HATBORO-HORSHAM 1
Good second halves were the theme for several SOL Continental squads on Wednesday.
One of those proved to be CB South, which rallied after yielding the first goal with two unanswered goals of their own in a 2-1 home triumph.
“We waited a long time today to put it into gear, but once we got down one to nil, we pushed forward,” said Titans coach Don Brady. “We were able to come from behind, which was a big thing for us.”
With 15 minutes to play, the Hatters broke through with a goal by Troy Eutermoser that put CB South in a tough spot. But five minutes later, Danny Remick set up Andrew Denno, who buried a shot past the Hatboro-Horsham keeper for the equalizer.
With about one minute remaining before sudden death overtime, Denno came through again. This time, the defender, who plays the back line along with Kevin Regan, Ian Betts and Evan Salkowski, connected on a penalty kick for the game winner.
“Colin McGonigal stepped up for us in the midfield,” praised Brady. “Our back four’s just been fantastic.”
McGonigal filled in solidly for the injured Danny Busichio during the match. His efforts helped the young Titans win their eighth match in nine tries and jump to 7-4 in the SOL Continental, while the Hatters dropped to 3-7-1.
“We have 14 new kids on our roster, which has taken some adjustments for us,” Brady said.

CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 2, PENNRIDGE 0
On a Senior Night that saw 15 players honored for their efforts, the Bucks were able to send their fans home happy and still tied with North Penn at 7-2-2 for second place in the SOL National. They did so thanks to a 2-0 blanking of Pennridge
“We really wanted to send them off the right way,” said CB West coach Stefan Szygiel. “Every senior had an impact tonight and that’s what Senior Night is all about.”
With both teams still looking for an initial goal in the second half, Joel Klapper popped in the eventual game winner on a shot assisted by Chris Van Pelt. Later in the half, Van Pelt got in on the scoring after gaining enough control of a loose ball to send in a connecting shot.
“He hit a beautiful, left-footed half volley,” said Szygiel. “It was arguably the goal of the season.
He got the technique and he just smashed one.”
Redd Brown also came up with a clutch save that kept the game at 2-0 in the closing six minutes. Senior and target forward Vince Brunetto came off the bench to start the second half and helped get the offense going by creating two corners in just five minutes.
“He gave us just a jolt of energy that the entire team needed,” praised Szygiel.
Pennridge fell to 3-6-2 in the league after the loss.

NORTH PENN 4, QUAKERTOWN 2
The Panthers scored the opening two goals to grab the halftime edge, but North Penn was not about to yield an upset.
The Knights responded with four goals in the second half to avert a costly loss and pull away for the win. The victory snapped a two-game losing skid to league rivals CB South and CB East.

Kyle Woulfe and Albert Haynes scored for Quakertown, which fell to 2-9 in the SOL Continental.

CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 5, SOUDERTON 0
The Patriots showed no signs of a letdown then they faced Souderton less than 24 hours after their emotional win over North Penn.
“It was a tough game to get interested in since the game last night was for first place and very emotional,” coach Mike Gorni said. “It was kind of a tricky game.”
Any concerns Gorni may have had about a letdown were dispelled very early in this one as Evan Vare scored back-to-back goals within a five-minute span – both with Broock Weiss assists – just nine minutes into the game. Five minutes later, Ryan Vare got his name in the scoring column when he scored off a set piece, using a Ryan Gleason assist. The Patriots took that 3-0 lead into halftime.
Six minutes into the second half, Gleason scored with an assist from Evan Vare, and later in the half, Ryan Vare connected on his second goal of the game to close out the scoring, once again using a Gleason assist.
“I don’t even think Souderton played poorly,” Gorni said. “We were pretty consistent, and we finished our opportunities, which obviously everybody struggles with. We didn’t struggle today. We scored the ball well.”
The Patriots (11-3, 9-2 SOL) will travel to Quakertown on Friday while the Indians (3-9-2, 2-8-1 SOL) will travel to Pennridge Friday.
