American Conference

Plymouth Whitemarsh 2, Wissahickon 1 (OT)
Heading into his team’s contest pitting two of the three remaining undefeated teams in the American Conference, PW coach Devon Landgraff knew the stakes were high even though the conference season is just getting underway.
It took overtime, but the Colonials were able to come out victorious, as Austin Betterly took a pass from Dominik Wlodarczyk and put the ball in the back of the net, giving PW the win over Wissahickon at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School.
Betterly's goal came in the 87th minute, and improved PW's record to 4-0-0 overall and 3-0-0 in conference play.
"It’s a huge win," Landgraff said.  "I have a lot of respect for Wissahickon.  They are a very solid team, and the game went back and forth.  It was just an exciting game."
Ethan Miller scored on a pass from Alex Bilodeau 15 minutes into the contest to put the Colonials on top 1-0.  Darien Williams used a pass from Cole Kropnick to tie things up for the Trojans (3-1-0, 2-1-0) with only 12 minutes remaining in regulation, eventually forcing overtime.
In the extra period, Betterly put in a header to give PW the win.
"Austin connected right inside the 18 and one-timed it,” Landgraff said. “It wasn't savable, and it was a great shot.”
Shane Smith stopped five shots in net for PW while his counterpart, John Carrozza, stopped four shots for the Trojans.
"It was a good battle in the first half, but we got a little too defensive in the second half," Landgraff said.  "They got some good opportunities, and they finally connected on one, so we switched gears and regrouped for the OT period.  We stuck to our initial game plan, and it was an exciting overtime period."

Norristown 1, Upper Merion 0
Norristown's first win of the year didn't come easy, but it did come in exciting fashion.
Sophomore Gene Santiago scored his first career goal, and freshman goalkeeper Will Baltrus recorded his first career shutout as the Eagles got past visiting Upper Merion in a conference showdown.
Santiago, who hadn't played all afternoon until just before tallying the game-winner, scored off a pass from Drew Baltrus for the game's only goal, propelling Norristown (1-2-0, 1-2-0) the all-important win.
"Gene was in the right place at the right time, and I had just put him in two minutes prior to that," Norristown coach Jared Elias said. "I was just giving someone a break, and he just followed the play.  He took his time instead of trying to do too much or clobber it. He wasn't even 10 yards away, and he just placed it right in the back of the net nice and easy."
For the Eagles, it was reason to celebrate.
"I'm happy for Gene, but for the whole team, really,” Elias said. "I was more happy for the team in general to get a win instead of going 0-3 and having the standings look like they usually do."
Will Baltrus, the starting goalkeeper as a freshman, turned in a standout effort, stopping 11 shots en route to the shutout.
"Will has been the reason we are in every game," Elias said. "He's tremendous and I'm lucky to have him. He makes ridiculous saves.  Today, he stopped two or three shots from point blank range right in front of him.  He made some great saves and he's going to have a great career.
The Vikings fell to 1-2-0 overall and in conference play. Norristown will play Cheltenham on Friday in a rescheduled conference game.

CHELTENHAM 1, SPRINGFIELD 0 (2 OT)
Senior Abe Austin scored in the third minute of the second overtime to propel the Panthers to the dramatic win.
Coach Chuck Gesing credited the strong defensive play of Gene Han, Matt Fitzsimmons and Antonio Ringgold as a key to the win. Goalkeeper Tom Hipwell earned his first shutout of the season by turning away all eight shots he faced. The Panthers registered 15 shots, generated by the strong play of Josh Ryan, Brendan Chaplin and Joe Galtman. The game culminated in a through ball from Galtman to Austin for the game winner in the second half of overtime.
The Panthers (1-4-0, 1-2-0 SOL) earned their first win of the year while the Spartans fell to 3-2-0 overall (1-2-0).

National Conference

Neshaminy 5, William Tennent 3
Neshaminy exploded for five first half goals, which included a pair from Dylan McDonald, and went on to defeat the visiting Panthers 5-3 in a battle for first place in the conference standings.
The Redskins took a lead they would not lose when McDonald turned a pass from James McCourt into a goal in the fourth minute. Nine minutes later, Dan Grindrod (Kenny Herrmann assist) found the net, and then it was Kevin Goetz (Zach Albarran assist) connecting for a goal that gave Neshaminy a 3-0 lead in the 21st minute.
Tennent broke the Redskins’ run with a goal in the 29th minute to make it a 3-1 game, but that’s as close as the Panthers would get. McDonald connected for his second goal in the 34th minute, this one unassisted, and four minutes later, Albarran turned a Larry Geisler pass into a goal to send the ‘Skins into halftime with a 5-1 lead.
The Panthers played well in the second half, scoring a pair of goals, but it wasn’t enough as the Redskins (4-0-0, 3-0-0) earned a win to take over sole possession of first place in the conference standings.
The loss was the first of the season for the Panthers (3-1-0, 2-1-0).

Continental Conference

Souderton 1, Central Bucks West 0 (OT)
Souderton's bid to remain atop the Continental Conference was a tough one, but thanks to a goal early in overtime, the Indians prevailed.
Justin Molyneaux fed Danny Sullivan with a pass in the 85th minute and Sullivan, a senior, finished, boosting Souderton (3-1-0, 3-0-0) to the big win.
"I think it was a really big confidence booster," Souderton coach Matt Benner said. "It's a building win for the boys, and to start off the way we have in the league is really nice moving forward. We hope we can move forward with that confidence and get as many three-point games as we can."
In the overtime period, Molyneaux sent a perfect corner kick to the middle, where Sullivan headed it into the net.
"I thought Danny showed a lot of senior leadership at the end of the second half," Benner said. "When we took him out of the midfield and put him in the front, he was really turning the switch on and the goal he scored in OT was a class finish.  He got high and headed it home from a fellow senior. Justin has also been a real steady presence for us all year. He and Danny showed their senior captain leadership today."
In the winning effort, Souderton goalkeeper Paul Steingraber stopped two shots. CB West's Daniel Merritt stopped five shots.
Souderton's defense has yet to allow a goal in conference play this season.
"The defense as a whole has been outstanding," Benner said. "In preseason, one of our senior defenders (DJ Rostron) got hurt and we slid one guy back (Nate Berso) and he's done a really nice job filling in with the other three defenders. They've all done really well. It speaks volumes that they've played three league games and haven't allowed a goal yet, and our goalie has barely had to make any saves. It speaks volumes to what they have done."
Benner mentioned Berso, along with Chadd Ziegler, Jack O'Leary, Ryan Kramer and Jesse Mangum as defenders who have all played excellent thus far this season.
"All five of defenders have done a fantastic job so far," he said.
The loss drops the Bucks to 3-1-1- overall and 2-1-0 in conference play, while keeping Souderton tied with Central Bucks East for the top spot in the standings.
