CALN TWP - When all the individual results were in at Saturday’s District 1 Boys Class AAA Track and Field Championships, Pennridge did not have a district champion – not one individual gold medalist.

But, at the same time, the Rams had a lot of district champions. That’s because the Pennridge boys team won the district championship.

“This is Pennridge’s first district title,” said coach Bob Hosier. “The girls have done it before, but this was the first time for the boys.

“We didn’t have any first-place finishes and only a couple seconds or thirds. We just kept picking up points here and there. It was a team effort.”

The Rams were coming off winning their third consecutive Suburban One League Continental Conference championship a week ago.

Pennridge’s scorers at the 2017 district meet were Griffin McMann (second, discus; second show put), Alex Dimon (third, 300 hurdles; eighth, 110 hurdles); Vincent Polignano (fourth, high jump); Matt Eissler (sixth, 800); Josh Pinkney (sixth, 200); 4x800 (second) and 4x400 (fifth).

“We knew we were coming into districts with a good contingent,” said Hosier. “You don’t win districts with first places alone. Every point counts.”

Harry S Truman’s standout sprinter Sayyid Saunders snagged the gold medal in the 100 (10.66) and the bronze medal in the 200 (21.51).

“The 10.66 was very good,” said Saunders. “My p.r. (personal record) was 10.67. I got out of the blocks well. I was so proud of myself with my drive phase.

“Then, I sped up and let my legs do the rest. The Downingtown East runner was ahead of me for a little while, but I finished really well. It was a very heavy effort.”

Souderton’s Shamar Jenkins took first in triple jump (48-11.25), and his teammate Stephen Scott placed first in the 300 hurdles (38.46) and second in the 110 hurdles.

“I felt pretty good in the 300 hurdles,” said Scott, a senior. “My weakest part so far is the first three hurdles. I hit the second hurdle but it didn’t throw me off. Once I got over the third hurdle, I knew I could win.

“This is two district gold medals in a row in the 300s. I’m so happy I did it. It’s good inspiration for states. And, I’m going to states in both hurdles races.”

Hatboro Horsham’s Nick Marino repeated as district champion in pole vault. His winning height Saturday was 15-0.

Neshaminy’s junior distance ace Rusty Kujdych was gold medalist in the highly-competitive 3,200 with a time of 9:07.00.

Central Bucks South’s Matthew Scarpill returned home with the gold medal in the 1,600 with a time of 4:16.45.

Central Bucks West picked up a coveted gold medal in the 4x800 relay with a clocking of 7:48.96.
