DIEHL, CALDWELL PUSH CONESTOGA TO ROAD WIN OVER PENNSBURY
By Jesse Bernstein for SuburbanOneSports.com
Conestoga junior guard Andrew Diehl scored 17 points to lead the Pioneers to a hard-fought 53-42 road victory over the Pennsbury Falcons. Sophomore guard Daryyl Caldwell added 14 for the Pioneers. Junior guard Mekhi Bryant led the Falcons with 23.
Pennsbury jumped out to a six-point lead after the first as Bryant poured in eight during the quarter. A few dump-offs to junior forward Derrick Woods resulted in a big two-handed slam and a couple of free throws. However, the lead was tenuous; Pennsbury gave up multiple offensive boards and only escaped without giving up second-chance baskets because of their superior size.
Andrew Diehl, who had a quiet four points in the first, started to make his presence felt in the second, scoring five of his nine points in the quarter in a one minute span. His last bucket came on an alley-oop off of an inbound that prompted a timeout from Pennsbury.
On the other end, the Falcons were settling for contested jumpers. A few hustle plays from junior guard Cameron Jones and a last-second three from Bryant gave Pennsbury a 26-22 lead heading into halftime.
The third quarter saw things get a little chippy. Conestoga junior forward Dan Vila and Derrick Woods had been jawing and battling in the paint for most of the game, and it finally boiled over late in the third. After Vila shoved Woods and no call was made, the two started towards each other, prompting warnings for both players. Just seconds later, they were at it again and were both assessed offsetting technical fouls. It was Vila’s fourth, and it came at a critical juncture. On the other end, Bryant had already stroked three 3’s in the quarter, and it looked as if Pennsbury might finally break away. However, strong play from senior reserve forward Andrew Utter and junior guard James Vandeventer kept it tight, and the quarter ended with Pennsbury up one.
For the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, every possession had coaches screaming and tough defense from all parties. Then, Vila fouled out, and Pennsbury’s size advantage was suddenly much larger. Derrick Woods, quiet since his technical, had three blocks in one possession, as the much smaller Pioneers simply could not finish over the 6’8 junior.
But Pennsbury couldn’t take advantage of their stellar defense. The only player who was consistently putting the ball in the basket, Bryant, suddenly found himself running into two defenders every time he curled around a screen. Meanwhile, Caldwell, held to only two points in the first half, exploded in fourth, hitting shots off the dribble and knocking down free throws to finish the game with 14 points. From the beginning of the quarter until there was 2:58 left, Conestoga outscored Pennsbury 13-4 to open up an eight-point lead. The lead was cut to five with 2:15 to go on another three from Bryant (he finished with five of them), but poor passing and porous defense doomed Pennsbury in the end.
After he was finished chest bumping his assistant coaches, Conestoga coach Michael Troy said that the win was “…a testament to the team and how hard they’ve worked. It’s awesome when you have a bunch of guys come in, and we talked about, in between quarters, being together. We’re the ones who determine the outcome.” Andrew Diehl, on the second half said that “…they played pretty good defense…And if they were going to deny me, that would give open shots to my teammates.”
Pennsbury (16-3, 10-1 SOL) will visit Abington on Tuesday, the only SOL team they’ve lost to this year. Conestoga (16-3, 11-2 CL) will play Upper Darby at home on Tuesday.

The Ghosts led 37-34 after a high octane first half and took a 54-48 lead into the final quarter when the Vikings rallied to knot the score at 68. It was 75-75 game after the first overtime, and in the second, the Vikings outscored the Ghosts 11-6.
Amir Hinton was one of four Abington players in double figures with 23 points. Matt Penecale added 18, and Laz Mackrides had 16. Anthony Lee scored 13, and Jordan Neely had nine.

The Panthers were hoping to exact a degree of revenge for the 22-point loss they absorbed at the hands of Neshaminy just four days earlier. “They’re always ready to play, and I knew they would be a different team from Tuesday.”
