COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 55, LOWER CAPE MAY (NJ) 47
The Indians were shorthanded heading into Sunday’s title game of the John Carlson Memorial Bracket championship game on Sunday in the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood. Not only were they without Michaela Finneyfrock, they also lost Katie Budny to an injury. Throw in the fact that the Indians found themselves in foul trouble, and it could have been a long afternoon, but it wasn’t, thanks in no small part to the efforts of the team’s four freshmen.
Emily Mackin, who received the starting nod, contributed a team-high 15 points on a dazzling 6-for-9 effort from the foul line and two-of-three from beyond the arc. She also pulled down six rebounds.
Fellow freshmen Megan Haggerty, Taylor Polinsky and Hannah Weiler also saw valuable minutes off the bench. Weiler, who buried the only three shots she took from the field, scored all seven of her points in the pivotal third quarter that saw the Indians turn a 24-23 halftime deficit into a 40-33 lead.
“I’m thrilled with the play I received from my really young kids,” coach Lou Palkovics said. “Between injuries, absences and foul trouble, it was really nice to see my bench step up, and that includes four freshmen.
“If I learned anything from this tournament it is that I am very comfortable going 10 or 11 deep on my bench, and that’s something I haven’t had in a while. It was great to win the championship, and the girls were excited.”
Jess Gerber added 14 points and six assists while Tara Garfield had 10 points, connecting on 4-of-6 shots from the field.
The Indians upped their record to 4-2 overall (2-1 SOL National Conference).
