ABINGTON 9, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 8
The Ghosts found themselves staring at a 4-1 halftime deficit, which could have marked the beginning of the end for an Abington squad that lost to Rock South by four earlier this season.
That didn’t happen.
The Ghosts outscored the Golden Hawks 8-4 in the second half to earn the dramatic win.
“This was a real good win,” coach Chris Aquilino said. “We were only down by three at halftime, and we just told them to keep playing the game.
“It was a sloppy first half. We had plenty of opportunities, but we just didn’t shoot well. Their goalie played really well. In the first half of that game, she was incredible. We have been in tight games all year, so being down in the first half was not the end of the world. I was proud of our kids. They kept fighting, they kept fighting, and finally they crossed over and got that one-goal lead”
Senior Hanna Sjholm scored the go-ahead goal with 4:17 remaining in regulation,
“She went to goal and put it in left handed,” Aquilino said.
The Ghosts won the ensuing draw and went into a stall the rest of the game.
“It all comes down to leadership,” Aquilino said. “Some of our seniors have become good leaders and settled things down.
“To go into a stall for four minutes, you have to use everybody catching the ball, and you have to trust each other. It’s a lot of pressure. It’s only one goal, and you know that South can get the ball back and can put the ball in the net, but they didn’t falter. You have to give them a lot of credit.”
The win came on the heels of a non-league loss to Methacton in overtime.
“This is huge,” Aquilino said. “Our goal is to try and win out.
“I was happy for the kids. They were really excited. Council Rock South has a really good team this year, and our kids know it. We couldn’t quite hang with them the last time we played, and they broke away and won the game.
“For our kids to come out and not be defeated after a 4-1 half really says a lot. They played the right way, they played together, and it paid off for them.”
The Ghosts were led by the six-point game of Mikki Raymond (three goals, three assists). Meredith Cox added the hat trick, and Jeannie Van Buren had two goals.
Gabi Rosenfeld (three goals, one assist) and Leann Hurley (two goals, one assist) led the Golden Hawks’ attack. Jamie Damirgian, Christine Besselman and Nikki Boyd each had single goals. Boyd and Mollie Sheehy both had one assist.
Claire Quist was credited with 10 saves in goal for the Golden Hawks. Kate Margolis turned away eight shots for the Ghosts.
“I think our goalie was key,” Aquilino said. “Our goalie and our defense played really well.
“Kate Margolis is a senior, and she’s played well for us all year. She’s kept us in some games. That and out transition – we started to be able to pass the ball downfield and get some pressure from a transition standpoint.”
The Ghosts improved to 3-3 in the league (5-5 overall) while the Golden Hawks are 3-2 in the league (5-4 overall).
PENNSBURY 19, NESHAMINY 3
Kelsy Gumbert (two goals, five assists) had a seven-point game, and Joy Hopkins (four goals, two assists) had six points to lead the Falcons. Missy Frankil added the hat trick, and Sara Benzinger and Rachel Pierce both had two goals. Jackie Sweeney had one goal and two assists while Anna Cruser, Ali Hickman and Alyssa Matthews each had one goal. Matthews also had an assist.
Sarah Sobolevitch and Liana Eyre combined to turn away six shots in goal for the Falcons, who improved to 5-0 in the league (8-2 overall). The Redskins are 0-5 in league play (3-8 overall).
CENTRAL BUCKS WEST 18, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 17
In a classic battle between the neighboring rivals, the Bucks eked out the win, fighting off a tenacious East comeback that saw the Patriots rally from a four-goal deficit with two minutes remaining.
“Despite East winning most of the draws in the second half, we held on and continued to produce on the offensive end,” said West coach Tara Schmucker, whose team led 10-6 at halftime.
Elena Romesburg had a huge game for the Bucks with five draw controls, six goals, two assists, two caused turnovers and nine ground balls. Sophomore Jacq Fitzgerald had five goals, and Paige Savard added the hat trick. Jane Savard, Sarah Gebre, Meghan Tillger and Elle Ueland each had one goal. Jane Savard, Ueland and Fitzgerald all had one assist.
For the Patriots, Marissa Glatt led the way with five goals and one assist, and Mary Kate Schwartz and Katt Miller both added three goals each. Kaitlyn Stout, Julia Norek and Maggie Stella each had two goals.
East goalie Alana Rivas had 10 saves and Emma Rosenthal had one while West’s Kyra Bergere had 13 saves.
The Bucks improved to 5-4 in the league (7-5 overall) while the Patriots are 4-5 in the league (8-5 overall).
NORTH PENN 14, SOUDERTON 11
The Maidens opened up an 8-5 halftime lead on their way to the important win.
"We knew Souderton was going to be tough," North Penn coach Jami Wilus Behm said. "They have good fundamentals, but our girls just kept fighting tonight.
"Earlier this week, we lost leading scorer Kaitlin Suzuki to an ACL tear. We have a philosophy at North Penn that is 'next girl up.' We had many players step up tonight. I thought Hannah Young and Ashley Durham really did a great job leading the attack."
Hannah Young (four goals, two assists), Lauren Green (three goals, two assists) and Ashley Durham (four goals) led the Maidens. Sydney Lear, Michelle Lassen and Jules Hill added one goal each. Senior Jenna Stover turned away six shots in goal for the Maidens, who upped their league record to 7-2 (9-2 overall). The Indians fell to 5-4 in the league (6-5 overall).
HATBORO-HORSHAM 15, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 4
Rachel Rausa led the Hatters with five goals while teammate Kate McKay contributed the hat trick. Colby Eldridge (two goals, two assists), Carly Daley (two goals, one assist), Annette Desipio (two goals, one assist), Maria Guerra (one goal, one assist), Casey Swezey (two assists) and Jenna Cutilli (one assist) also contributed to the scoring.
For the Titans, Megan Hamilton had one goal and one assist while Emily Cliggett, Courtney Dietzel and Sara Poli each had one goal. Lauren Roberts added an assist.
Leslie Searles turned away eight shots in goal for the Titans. Jackie Giovinazzo was credited with seven saves in goal for the Hatters, who improved to 8-0 in the league (10-1 overall). The Titans fell to 2-7 in league play (3-8 overall).
NORRISTOWN 14, UPPER MORELAND 13 (OT)
It wasn’t easy, but the Eagles – thanks to a goal by Kerri Harner in OT – earned their first SOL win on Thursday. They trailed for most of the game, rallying to knot the score on a goal by Keifonna Ferguson that sent the game into overtime.
“They were pumped up for the game,” Norristown coach Stacie Staufenberg said. “We talked to them – ‘Hey, if you want a national championship, this is it.’
“We played well. We made some adjustments on defense. We gave up our defense and decided to just defend in the eight-meter, and it worked.
“We were losing until the very end of the game when I took a timeout and challenged my team. They stepped up.”
The Eagles’ coach credited the performance of senior midfielder Amelia Schunder.
“She became a captain late in the season, and she just understands,” Staufenberg said. “She works hard at leading.
“Keifonna Ferguson stepped up really big. They were afraid of her. She’s very controlled. They all worked well together. It was a team effort. They wanted it.”
The Eagles are without senior captain Rachel Hagel, who went down with a torn ACL and is out for the season.
Harner (four goals, one assist), Megan Grande (four goals, one assist) and Ferguson (four goals) led the Eagles’ attack. Natalie Mitchell added a pair of goals.
The Golden Bears were led by Maura O’Leary (three goals, two assists) and Maddie Maura (three goals). Ashley Duff (two goals, one assist), Felicia Milsop (two goals), Delaney Smith (one goal, one assist), Emily Zanine (one goal, one assist) and Veronica Baez (one goal) rounded out the scoring.
Jamilynn Justice had 12 saves in goal for the Eagles while Kaitlin Taylor was credited with six saves for Upper Moreland.
While the Golden Bears fell to 1-8 in league play (3-9 overall), the Eagles are 1-9 in the league (2-10 overall).
UPPER DUBLIN 18, CHELTENHAM 12
Taylor D’Ginto scored seven goals while Rachel DiFrangia had five goals and one assist to lead the Flying Cardinals. Kayla McAneney added three goals and one assist, and Samantha Boyd had two goals. Erin Russell (one goal) and Shelby Kenny (one assist) closed out the scoring.
For the Lady Panthers, Sammie McManus led the way with the hat trick. Emily Hawkins, Allie Liss, Gabby Szczepanek and Allison Hawkins each had two goals. Skye Wallace added one goal.
Upper Dublin goalie Sarah Gallagher was credited with 12 saves.
The Flying Cardinals are 9-0 in league play (10-2 overall) while the Lady Panthers are 5-3 in the league (5-6 overall).
WISSAHICKON 16, PLYMOUTH WHITEMARSH 3
The Trojans jumped out to a 10-2 halftime lead on their way to the decisive win. Laura Frankenfield (five goals, four draw controls) and Zoe Gomez (five goals, three ground balls) led the Trojans. Lindsey Andersen added two goals, one assist and four ground balls. Bailey Weber had four assists, and Lauren Irvine chipped in with two goals. Taylor Myers (one goal) and freshman Marie Dickson (one goal, one assist) closed out the scoring. Jackie Hibbs (three ground balls, one interception) and Ashley Laskowitz (three ground balls) came up big defensively.
The Trojans are 7-3 in the league (8-3 overall) while the Colonials fell to 2-6 in the league (3-8 overall).
Boys
CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 10, HOLY GHOST PREP 9 (OT)
Tyler McGee scored the game winner in overtime to cap a come-from-behind win over the Firebirds. The closely 
contested battle featured several lead changes with the Firebirds taking a 9-7 lead with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Titans took advantage of man-up opportunities, using goals by Tyler Strayline with 4:49 remaining and another at 3:31 by Tom DiBrino to knot the score. Led by goalie Ryan Kelly’s seven fourth quarter saves, the Titans played inspired defense to send the game into OT.
Coming out of a timeout in the first possession of sudden death, McGee knifed through the Firebirds’ defense to score the game winner for the Titans (10-3, 6-2 SOL).
Brendan McGrath led the Titans with four goals while Strayline finished with two goals and an assist. Joel Zimmerman and Willie Pendleton both had a goal and two assists while DiBrino finished with one goal and one assist. Kevin Witchey and Jake Henze each had an assist. AJ Caputo and Brandon Jacobsen had critical hustle plays on defense while Tim McCrudden, Jason Sklencar and Conner Bechtel keyed the long-pole effort.
With five games remaining in the regular season, South’s 10 wins is the most for the program since 2007 and is a dramatic turnaround for a team that won only two games in 2011.

UPPER MERION 10, SPRINGFIELD (MONTCO) 9
Trevor Kupecky had a seven-point game for the Vikings (one goal, six assists) while Mike Zadroga scored a team-high five goals. Joe Mintzer had two goals, and Tyler Thornton had a goal and an assist. Jack Rosenfield and Nick Shendge both had single goals. Troy Minnich had 20 saves in goal for the Vikings.
UPPER MORELAND 16, NORRISTOWN 3
The Golden Bears opened up a 7-0 lead at the end of one quarter and never looked back. Norristown scorers were Sean Calhoun, Tyeler Kingkiner and Carson Lucard with one goal each. Cody Baker had one assist.
COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 7, COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 5
The Golden Hawks earned the hard-fought win in the battle of neighboring rivals on Thursday. Kyle Walter led Rock South with the hat trick while Mitchell Vaysman had two goals and three assists and Shane Magrann added two goals. Sam Presley had one goal and Corey Giampietro, three assists, to close out the Golden Hawks' scoring.
Wednesday, April 24
CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 9, PENNRIDGE 8
The Titans held off an inspired Ram squad to win the tightly-contested SOL game on Wednesday at War Memorial Field. Pennridge took advantage of numerous CB South penalties to score several doorstep goals and keep the game close down the stretch, but the Titans were able to hold off the Rams to spoil their upset bid.
Pennridge's Eric Fernandez scored his fourth goal of the night on a two-man up situation to make it a 9-8 game with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, but the CB South defense held off the charging Rams on an intercepted pass by Titans' defenseman Kevin Uzelac with a minute to play. CB South's Kevin Witchey sealed the win with a key ground ball as time expired.
On offense, the Titans' balanced attack was led by Brendan McGrath with two goals and an assist and Jake Henze with a goal and two assists. Ty Strayline and Ty McGee each had two goals while Joel Zimmerman and Willie Pendleton each added a goal for CB South. Alex Heimbach had three goals for Pennridge while Matt Brown had a goal and an assist.
With the win, the Titans improved to 6-2 in the Continental Conference (9-3 overall). The Rams are 1-6 in the league (3-9 overall).
UPPER DUBLIN 16, NORRISTOWN 2
Ten players contributed scoring for the Flying Cardinals in Wednesday's win. Ben Winebrake (four goals, two assists) and Michael Rama (three goals, three assists) led the way with six-point games. Michael Sowers (three goals, two assists) had a five-point day. Ryan Siwinski, Zach Hanson, Will Lunney, Nicholas Vernacchio, Michael Mullen and Wills each added one goal. Vernacchio and John Minehart each had one assist. Jack Deragon and Bobby McPeake combined for four saves in goal.
The Eagles, who trailed just 2-1 at the end of one quarter but 8-1 by halftime, received a goal and an assist from Mike Smith while Sean Calhoun had a single goal.
