SOUDERTON 11, CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 10
The Patriots gave the Indians all they could handle in Wednesday’s SOL contest, opening up an early 5-2 lead and battling to a 7-7 halftime tie before the Indians rallied for the hard-fought win.
According to Souderton coach Kelly Yemm Kelly, this is a vastly different East team than the one that was winless in the SOL last season.
“Having seen them last year compared to this year, they’re just much more aggressive than they’ve been in the past, and they don’t let down,” Kelly said. “They’re a team – you can’t count them out if they’re down a couple of goals.
“Their transition in the midfield was absolutely tremendous today. They have fast girls that move with such purpose. Before, it was a slower paced game for them, but now it’s a lot faster. They’ve picked up their passing ability and their transition, and they have two players that are just solid – Schwartz and Norek.”
Schwartz accounted for six of East’s goals while Norek had one goal, and Kat Miller had a goal and an assist. Marissa Glatt and Lauren Burrell each had assists for the Patriots, who one night earlier battled defending conference champion Hatboro-Horsham tough.
“We know all the changes that have happened in the league – teams losing girls, teams getting different coaches,” Kelly said. “What we really try to focus on is that this is an open conference right now. There are so many changes, and everybody is right at each other’s level, and it can go one way or the other.
“My girls knew East played a solid game against Hatboro, and we know the level Hatboro can play at. I think they were prepared going in knowing East is a team that is out to prove something.”
The Indians were led by the five-point effort of Amber Lambeth, who had three goals and two assists. Natalie Bulger added three goals and an assist, and Tori Bulger and Alyssa Ziegler both had two goals. Chessie Rehmer closed out the scoring with a goal and an assist.
“We were actually down 5-2 right before I called a timeout to try and regroup the girls and pull them back together,” Kelly said. “Our transition, which we’ve really tried to work on since our scrimmage, wasn’t where it should be.
“After that timeout, the girls completely changed the way we were moving in the midfield, and I was extremely proud of our offensive attack in the transition coming down into our attacking end. We had quick ball movement going down the field, which was really great to see.
“A lot of younger girls stepped up to kind of take control of the midfield. Natalie Bolger stepped up and had an extremely positive game. She played really well in the midfield as well as Amber Lambeth.”
Jen Bergey was credited with 12 saves in goal for the Indians while her counterpart, East’s Alana Rivas, had 15 saves.
The Indians are 1-0 in the SOL while the Patriots fell to 0-2 (1-2 overall).

“The whole team did a great job implementing what we worked on in practice.”
Pennridge goalie Danielle Nichols turned away 20 shots in a busy night while West’s Kyra Bergere had eight saves.

“The kids were working together as a team,” South coach Mike Sharman said of his team’s impressive first half showing. “They were catching and throwing, they were fundamentally sound, and they looked really good.
“The defense was playing patiently, basically waiting for the other team to make a mistake. They did really, really well.”
The Knights outscored the Titans 3-1 in the second half.
“I don’t know what happened,” Sharman said. “We played Kennett last Friday, and the same happened. We were up 7-4 at halftime, and we lost 9-8, and we scored one goal in the second half.
“We have to figure out how to play four quarters of lacrosse. In the first half, the kids played great. Everything we practiced, they executed. In the second half, another team showed up that I didn’t recognize.
“One of the things that hurt us in the second half was we had nine penalties versus North Penn had zero That’s a challenge for us not to commit so many penalties and be man-down for so long. For us to have nine penalties and to let up three goals, I was really proud of my defense. Ryan Kelly, our goalie, is just lights-out amazing.”
Kelly was credited with 10 saves in goal, and North Penn’s Chris Barr also had 10 saves.
Tyler Strayline led the Titans with the hat trick while Anthony Paone, Tim McCrudden, Brendan McGrath and Willie Pendleton added single goals. Jake Henze had a pair of assists, and Pendleton, McGrath and Matt Mignogna each had one assist.
