CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 10, UPPER DUBLIN 9 (OT)
Emily Cliggett scored the tying goal with 4:11 seconds remaining in regulation and also scored the game winner with 2:26 remaining in the first three-minute overtime period to propel the Titans to the dramatic win.
“This is a huge win,” South coach Janique Craig said. “Upper Dublin has a strong program. They’ve been at the top of their conference for a long time.”
Early on, there was nothing to suggest that the game would be decided in overtime as the Titans took what appeared to be a commanding 7-1 lead only to watch the Flying Cardinals battle back to go on top late in regulation. The Titans showed their mettle and came back to earn the win.
“We have a young team this year with six or seven sophomores in our lineup,” Craig said. “Our goal is to improve every game, and this is a great learning experience. Even though you’re up by six goals, you can’t let down. Upper Dublin came back strong in the second half, and it just shows you can’t let down no matter how many goals you’re up.
“It was a great learning experience, and I’m glad it happened at the beginning of the season so we can take this and use what we learned in another game.”
The Titans appeared to be on their way to an easy win when they sprinted to a 7-1 halftime lead.
“We had a game plan, and they stuck to it,” Craig said. “They played with poise, made smart decisions and didn’t force it. That was the key - to make sure they were guarding their marks, playing with poise, getting in transition and have a passing game.
“That’s what we were focusing on - making sure we were looking up, seeing the field and moving the ball quickly. They did a great job in the first half. We were moving the ball and working the offense. Then the second half came.”
The second half belonged to the Flying Cardinals, who scored four consecutive goals in a two-minute span eight minutes into the second half. The Flying Cardinals tied the game at 8-8 with 6:14 left in regulation and 11 seconds later took a 9-8 lead, setting the stage for Cliggett’s tying goal two minutes later.
“We only had two fouls the entire first half, which is really great for any team,” Craig said. “In the second half, Upper Dublin just had the momentum.
“The last three minutes, we were in possession. With 20 or 25 seconds left on the clock, they got the ball, and they were coming down as time ran out.”
The Flying Cardinals controlled the draw in OT, but the Titans gained possession after a Cardinal overthrow. Moments later, Cliggett scored the game winner.
Cliggett and Courtney Dietzel each connected for the hat trick. Sarah Poli had one goal and three assists. Tori Wigand had a goal and an assist, and Devon Dietzel and Corrine Kenney each added single goals. Annie Danyluk chipped in with an assist.
Courtney Dietzel also had 10 draw controls and was assigned the task of defending the dangerous Julie Cross.
“She did very well,” Craig said. “Kelly Senour and Courtney Taylor did well on guarding their marks, and our defense - we were just there with the slides.
“Everyone did well on defense, and that continued right up the field into transition. We played smart, clean defense, and we capitalized on the other team’s mistakes. We played as a team and one unit.”
Erin Putnam had 15 saves in goal for the Titans.
For the Flying Cardinals, Cross led the way with four goals and three assists. Taylor D’Ginto had three goals, and Rachel DiFranga had one goal and one assist. Dominique Greene-Coleman had one goal.
The Titans upped their record to 3-1 while the Flying Cardinals fell to 0-5. Four of Upper Dublin’s five losses have been by two goals or less.

NORTH PENN 15, ABINGTON 9
It had been a week between games for the Maidens, and coach Jami Wilus Behm decided to use that time to hold some intense practices.
“I think they will tell you they were excited to have a game,” Behm said. “Practices have been tough. There have been pushups and 50-yard sprints every time we drop the ball.
“In our first two games, we had way too many turnovers. We had a lot tonight, but we worked really hard to get the ball back. I saw a lot of improvement. Even though we won the first game against Ridley (9-8), we still didn’t play -I felt - our best.
“In our game against Hatboro (a 15-6 loss), there were times we played really well and then other times when we didn’t. Having five practices in a row where we basically did all drills until yesterday – yesterday we started to do more game stuff, but it was a lot of catching and throwing and back to basics. We considered it tryouts. We even did a trial mile and got back to the normal routine.”
The Maidens reaped the benefits for that practice in Wednesday’s win, and no one looked more eager to play than junior Emily Schulze, who scored a game-high six goals, contributed an assist and had six draw controls.
“The work we put in the past several days really set the tone,” Schulze said. “We were bummed after our loss to Hatboro.
“At the practices this week, we went hard. We knew we needed this win, so we just came out strong. We put in the effort this week.”
Sydney Lear added the hat trick, Jenn DeLongis added two goals and one assist, and Juliana Hill had two goals. Chloe Novak and Ashley Durham each added single goals, and Michelle Lassen had one assist. Novak also had five draw controls.
“We needed the draw every time,” Schulze said. “If we lost the draw, we needed to get it back, but if we won the draw, we wanted to push it to goal.”
The Ghosts were led by the four-goal, two assist performance of Jeannie VanBuren. Lindsay Baer had two goals, and Sam McGee had one goal and one assist. Rachel Morris and Mikki Raymond both had one goal, and Maddie Sjohlm had one assist.
“Unfortunately, it was one or two people that ended up doing the majority of the work tonight,” Abington coach Mary Kate Lomady said. “They have a lot of heart and a lot of soul, and I’m so proud of them.
“We were down some starters, dealing with sickness and other issues. We were struggling with depth issues, and our girls were tired. We weren’t able to get over that hump. Tonight it was just an off night for them.”
Goals by Lear and Hill spotted the Maidens an early 2-0 lead, and they still led by two (5-3) after a DeLongis goal at the 13:55 mark. The Ghosts used goals by Morris and McGee (reverse stick) to knot the score 5-5. The Maidens reeled off three straight goals to go on top 8-5 and took a 9-7 lead into halftime.
Goals by Durham and Schulze to open the second half made it an 11-7 game, but Raymond scored for the Ghosts, trimming the Maidens lead to 11-8. The Maidens – out of a timeout – won the ensuing draw, and back-to-back goals by Schulze gave the Maidens a five-goal advantage. The Ghosts never threatened the rest of the way.
“Tonight once (Emily) made that first shot and second shot – she was working at a different speed,” Behm said of Schulze. “She’s really fast, but sometimes she doesn’t use it.
“Tonight from the defensive end to the offensive end, she was just tremendous. It was one of the best games for a player I’ve seen in a while.”
Sophomore Michelle Dyck turned away 11 shots in goal for the Maidens. For Abington, Avery Greenberg - up from the junior varsity - turned away four shots in the second half.
"She really came up big for us," Lomady said.
While the Ghosts saw their record drop to 2-3, the Maidens improved to 2-1.
“This (win) will give us the fire to go on,” Schulze said. “It will give us the energy and motivation. I think this win will help us in the end.”

Doylestown, PA – Central Bucks South went out to an 8-5 fourth quarter lead and held off a late comeback by a determined North Penn team to win 8-7 in Suburban One Continental Conference lacrosse action on Wednesday night at War Memorial Field.  The Knights took an early 1-0 lead, thanks to the first of Matt Brady’s five goals, but the Titans’ Jake Henze scored late in the first quarter to tie the game at 1-1.  Brady scored again for the Knights early in the second quarter before goals by Anthony Paone and Brendan McGrath gave the Titans a 3-2 lead, but North Penn tied it at 3-3 on a goal by Scott Keffer.  Facing off after the Knights goal, the Titans’ Anthony Paone executed a spectacular split dodge to finish up the first half scoring at 4-3.  Knights’ goalie Chris Barr kept the game close with several great saves and a timely hit on a Titan shooter.
The second half saw the Titans score again on the second of McGrath’s three goals to take a 5-3 lead, but Brady scored two in a row to tie it at 5-5.  McGrath then scored his third goal of the night to end the third quarter with a 6-5 Titans lead.  Leading off the fourth quarter CB South scored two, the first on a tipped feed from Joel Zimmerman to Jimmy Gallagher and then got their final tally on a man-up rocket from Evan Falkowski to make it an 8-5 game.
North Penn goalie Chris Barr remained hot and kept the game close as Brady went to work again, scoring his fifth to close the gap at 8-6 with 3:49 left.  Jake Diamond then scored for North Penn with just under two minutes left in the game to make it an 8-7 nailbiter, but the Titans’ defense, led by Kevin Witchey, Kevin Uzelac, Tim Ross, Bobby DiBrino and Jason Sklenkar, was able to hold off the charging Knights.
Brady led all scorers with five goals and an assist, while McGrath had three goals and an assist to lead the Titans.  Barr finished up with 17 saves for the Knights.  With the win, CB South improved to 4-0 (2-0 SOL Continental), while the Knights dropped to 1-3 (0-3 SOL Continental)
