COUNCIL ROCK NORTH 12, PENNRIDGE 10
The Lady Rams were hoping to make a statement while the Indians were looking to come out of an emotional week with their perfect conference mark intact.
It was the Indians surviving a gutsy effort to eke out their third win in four days, using a late goal by Marina Schreiner (Taylor Campbell assist) to break a 10-10 tie with 2:47 remaining in regulation. Devon Mela scored a come-around goal with 15 seconds remaining to put the finishing touched on a win that upped the Indians’ record to 5-0 in conference play.
The Golden Hawks were less than 24 hours removed from a hard-fought win over Central Bucks South after defeating archrival Council Rock South on Tuesday.
“You could tell out there it was tough for us, but once we got a goal we would feed off of each other, and the energy came back,” Campbell said.
The game featured seven ties, and even after the Indians – sparked by goals from Campbell, Anna Lehman, Schreiner and Claire Jarema in a five-minute span – opened up a 7-3 lead, the Lady Rams came roaring back.
Goals by Sam Ryder and Jordan Rimmer (Allison Fugate assist) in the final 90 seconds of the half trimmed Rock North’s lead to 7-5 by halftime. That advantage was erased just over five minutes into the second half when Rimmer scored on the heels of a goal by Maddie Dachowski. A free position goal by Maddie Maher gave the Rams a 9-8 lead, but Jarema scored the equalizer.
The two teams were still deadlocked 10-10 after Jackie Stevens scored for the Lady Rams with 4:04 showing on the scoreboard clock. The Rams won the ensuing draw but saw a free position shot turned away by Rock North goalie Margaret D’Auria, and defense, according to senior co-captain Laura Kwasnoski, was a key in the win.
“A lot of defense,” she said. “Our defense was really stepping up and being aggressive, especially with two of our starting defensive people out.”
The Indians, who were minus defensive starters Camille Aspite and Nicole Ender, came up with some key takeaways down the stretch.
For the Indians, Jarema had three goals while Schreiner and Mela both had two. Campbell had a goal and an assist, and Aubrey Deon, Makena Hanson, Kwasnoski, and Anna Lehman each had single goals.
Rimmer led the Rams with four goals while Maher had a pair. Ryder, Stevens, Dachowski and Jennifer Rodzewich each added single goals.
We were ready to go - we were focused, and we battled it out,” Maher said. “It was a tough game, but we stuck through it.”
