WISSAHICKON 10, UPPER DUBLIN 8
By Mike Prince  for SuburbanOneSports
In what is David Schlesinger’s second year with Wissahickon, the head coach did what the previous coach was unable to do in the previous four years with the Lady Trojans.
Going against their neighborhood rival in Upper Dublin, the Lady Trojans, celebrating their Senior Appreciation Night, got a huge effort out of freshman midfielder Carolyn Wilde in a 10-8 win over the Lady Cardinals in a Suburban One American Conference game at Wissahickon High School on Monday night.
It was the first win for Wissahickon over Upper Dublin in six years and puts the Lady Trojans into a tie for second place in the conference with the Lady Cardinals.
“It’s a huge win,” Schlesinger said.  “It has been six years since we beat them and with the proximity of the schools to each other, it creates a natural rivalry.  A lot of the girls on both teams grew up with each other and to get beat so many times in a row and now get this first win in a year where we’re only playing once as opposed to usually a home and away, it’s huge.  The girls worked incredibly hard and they were completely pumped up for this game.”
The two teams went back and forth in the first half, trading goals until Wissahickon (10-5, 6-2) was able to take a one-goal lead into the half (5-4).
In the second half, thanks in large part to the play of Wilde, Wissahickon was able to win a majority of the draw controls, eventually going up 10-6 before coming out on top with the two-goal victory.
“It was a typical Upper Dublin – Wissahickon game,” Upper Dublin coach Dee Cross said.  “It was a great game and very hard-fought and congrats to Wissahickon.”
“For my program, in my second year at Wissahickon, it’s a big statement win,” Schlesinger said.  “Upper Dublin is the big bear who has been beating on us for a long time, so to get over that hump is very meaningful and I think we should do some interesting things moving forward.”
The Lady Trojans received three goals from Zoe Gomez, while Wilde, who won five draw controls, scored twice and added a pair of assists.  The freshman was matched up against Julie Cross, Upper Dublin’s 6-foot-2 star, who, despite scoring five goals, was held in check for much of the second half.
“Carolyn really changed the game going against an incredibly talented player in Julie Cross,” Schlesinger said.  “She was able to use her quickness and her body to box her out a little bit and things started going our way.  Julie Silverman also came up big in net and she was spectacular.  So many players played really well.”
Silverman stopped 10 shots in net to earn the win, while the Lady Cardinals (7-9, 6-2), who face Norristown on Wednesday, received nine saves from goalkeeper Sarah Gallagher.
Taylor D’Ginto added two goals and an assist for Upper Dublin, while Rachel DiFrangia scored once.  Cross added two assists to her game-high five goals.
Wissahickon, which also received two goals from Emily Vervlied and one apiece from Christina Tsiobikas, Lauren Irvine and Rachel Zucker, is just happy to still be eligible for districts.
“We want to continue our season and we’re not ready to go home after Saturday,” Schlesinger said.  “To get that win and still be eligible for the playoffs is a huge thing.”
Zucker added a pair of assists and two groundballs, while Shannon Stagliano led the Lady Trojans with four groundballs.

SOUDERTON 17, NORTH PENN 7
There was something magical about Monday night’s win over the Maidens. At least for players on Souderton’s sidelines. It had been a long time between championships – a decade to be exact, and the Indians left no doubt that they are the class of the newly-aligned SOL National Conference this season, rolling to the impressive win over their nemesis.
When the final horn sounded, just one thought ran through senior Michelle Goodwin’s mind.
“Champions,” she said.
And champions they are indeed. Last year, the Indians finished a distant fifth in the then Continental Conference with a .500 record in league play. This year, they rolled through league play without a loss and boast a 15-0 record overall.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” senior Tori Bulgier said. “It just felt like the gears were working. I feel like we all really trusted each other and had a lot of confidence in each other (more) than we had in some other games, and I feel like we really came together this game.”
What is it that sets this year’s team apart?
“The camaraderie,” said Bulgier.
“We never let a person get down,” Goodwin said. “We’re always bringing people up. We’ve just been playing together so long, and that’s a key factor as well.”
That team concept carried over into the scoring where the Indians received three goals from Nikki Palmer, Chessie Rahmer (two assists), Natalie Bulgier (one assist) and Tori Bulgier. Amber Lambeth (one assist) and Brittany Roynan both added a pair of goals while Krista Schneider had one goal and Rachel Judge, one assist.
“We have a very unselfish team, and it shows through our stats – we have six goal scorers almost every single game,” Souderton coach Kelly Kelly said.
Souderton owned Monday’s game from the outset. Ten seconds into the game Rahmer, who came up with the ball on the draw, found Palmer for the score. The Indians were off and running. A come-around goal by Natalie Bulgier was followed by a Tori Bulgier goal, this one with an assist from Judge, and the Indians led 3-0 before fans had settled in their seats.
“I can’t complain when my team comes out and does that,” Kelly said. “Before each game, we have all these hype things we do to get ready.
“A lot of our season has been – have fun with it. If you don’t have fun, you don’t want to play. Every single game, this group of girls has a good time, and they want to play together. I think that friendship really takes people far.”
When Rahmer scored at the 6:05 mark, the Indians led 9-0, and only a goal by Juliana Hill, who finished with four goals, prevented the Indians from taking a shutout into halftime.
“This season – with the way we’ve been working, there’s no letdown,” Kelly said. “Every game is a single game. This was a great way to end league play.”
A goal by Roynan put the Indians on top 13-2 before the Maidens scored back-to-back goals for the first time all game when Hill and Emily Schulze connected.
The Indians had some dazzling sequences in the second half, including Roynan’s goal off the draw and Lambeth’s powerful sidearmed shot with a Natalie Bulgier assist. The Indians led 17-4 before the Maidens used goals by Ashley Durham, Kate Suzuki and Hill to close out the scoring.
The win was the Indians’ first over the Maidens in six years.
“Every time we have been on the opposing side on the losing end, I think it’s built a little bit of wanting to win – wanting to win so badly,” Goodwin said.
Not to be overlooked in the win was the performance of junior goalie Kelly Williams, who turned away 13 shots – several on superb saves.
“Kelly stepped up big tonight,” Kelly said. “She was making the key saves when she needed to.
“Our defense draws a lot of energy from Kelly – how can you not when a girl plays like that? You work your butt off, and Kelly is right there supporting you. Kelly came up with huge saves. She kept us in it for the beginning piece of it, and then the girls took off with it.”
Defensively, Goodwin had four ground balls and four caused turnovers. Roynan and Lambeth both had six ground balls and also had eight and five draw controls respectively.
The Maidens (11-6, 6-2 SOL) will close out their regular season with a league contest at Council Rock North on Wednesday.
“I think we showed our youth a lot tonight,” North Penn coach Jami Wilus Behm said. “They’ve been building up for four years basically with this team.
“I don’t know when the last time they beat us, but these girls have been playing together in their youth program, and they’ve been building. They took their hits in the beginning. We just made a lot of mistakes out on the field.”
The Indians will face one of the district’s elite teams in Radnor on Friday.
“We can’t have big heads,” Tori Bulgier said. “Also, another thing we pride ourselves on is our composure. We just try to be the best we can.”
“We work together as a team, not as individuals,” Goodwin added. “That’s what we focus on too.
“We just have to take this into playoffs. We’re not going to let down.”
