SOL Boys/Girls Lacrosse Wrap (5-6-14)

Check out the results for SOL lacrosse teams in action Tuesday.

Boys
Upper Dublin 17, Plymouth Whitemarsh 2
For the second consecutive year, Upper Dublin was not only crowned as American Conference champions, but yet again, no team in the conference was able to get the best of the Cardinals.
Thanks to a five-goal performance from Michael Mullen, as well as three goals and seven assists from Michael Sowers, the Cardinals were able to get past Plymouth Whitemarsh, 17-2, in a regular season finale at Upper Dublin High School on Tuesday night.
Evan Scott added four goals, Ryan Siwinski scored three and Nick Vernacchio tallied five assists while helping Upper Dublin to finish the regular season 15-2 overall and 14-0 in the conference.
“Plymouth Whitemarsh always comes out to fight and they’re a well-coached team,” UD coach J.P. Banks said. “They came out strong in the beginning and it took us a little while to get our feet, but once we did, our kids figured things out. I thought we executed well.
“It’s always exciting to win the conference.  This is a deep group of kids and it was great for them.”
On Tuesday, Upper Dublin went up 5-1 after one quarter and never looked back.  The Cardinals took a 7-2 lead into the half and scored six more times before implementing the mercy rule and a running clock in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, as always, the Cardinals were led by Jack Rapine.
“Jack and Michael (Sowers) have been great for us this year,” Banks said.  “We always talk about the goal scorers, but our defense does a great job and gives us a lot of opportunities and possessions.  We looked at the beginning of the season with a goal to win the conference championship and our second goal was to try to go undefeated in the conference and thanks to those guys and the whole team, we were able to accomplish our first two goals.  We lost a strong senior class from last year, but our seniors stepped up this year to fill the void, and the way our younger kids stepped up into the leadership role has been really proud for me to watch.”
With no losses in the conference since 2012, everyone knows that Upper Dublin is the class of the American Conference, but with districts ahead, the Cardinals know they have a much tougher road ahead.
The Colonials, whose regular season ended with a conference record of 7-6, received a goal from Austin Betterly in the losing effort.

Wissahickon 15, Norristown 1
Wissahickon went up 7-0 after one quarter and led 13-0 at the half while cruising to a 15-1 win over visiting Norristown on Tuesday night.
The Trojans, who finished 11-2 in American Conference play, good for sole possession of second place (behind Upper Dublin), were led by Tommy Monaghan’s three goals and one assist.
Luke Gomez, Austin Jones and Matt Halligan each scored twice for the Trojans, while Zach Scannapieco, Brooks Melvin, Nate DeGroat, John Carrozza and Tyler Zapach each scored once.  Scannapieco, Jesse Miller, Jack Shea and Pat Magdalinski all drew assists for Wissahickon.
The Trojans used three goalies, including Jack Myers, who started and made two saves.  Noah Katz and Cooper McMasters stopped three shots apiece in net.
The Eagles’ lone goal came in the fourth quarter.  Norristown’s season ended with a conference record of 1-11.

Upper Merion 16, Cheltenham 3
Upper Merion traveled to Cheltenham and came away with a 13-goal victory on Tuesday afternoon, but the final score is misleading. The Panthers, 24 hours removed from an emotional win over Truman on Monday night - their first win of the season, trailed by just a 6-3 count at halftime before the Vikings pulled away int he second half.
The Vikings have one game remaining on their schedule at Springfield on Saturday, while the Panthers, who have been without their head coach for most of the season, have a contest at Norristown.

Central Bucks West 5, North Penn 2
Central Bucks West finished the Continental Conference with a record of 7-4 following a three-goal victory over opponent North Penn on Tuesday under the lights at North Penn High School.
The Knights’ disappointing season ended with a conference record of 1-10.

Luke Homan scored once and added an assist for North Penn, while Zach McKelvie added a goal of his own.

Holy Ghost Prep 8, Hatboro-Horsham 6
Hatboro-Horsham received three goals from Nick Paci and two more from Brendan Mulligan, but it came in a losing effort, as Holy Ghost prep got past the Hatters by two goals in a non-conference affair at Hatboro-Horsham High School on Tuesday night.
Zach Erwine scored once and added an assist for the Hatters, while Pierre Armstrong dished out three assists.  Brian Remaily recorded one assist for Hatboro-Horsham, which Mark Poust stopped 10 shots in net in the losing effort.
HG Prep was led by Michael Major’s four goals, while Greg Price stopped 14 shots in net to earn the win.

Council Rock North 6, Pennsbury 5
One season ago, Council Rock North was forced to share second place in the National Conference with top rival Council Rock South.  This year, that spot belongs solely to the Indians.
Brian Fitzpatrick scored three times and Matthew Moller scored twice to help lead the Indians to a 6-5 win over Pennsbury at Council Rock North High School on Tuesday night.
The win guaranteed CR North sole possession of second place in the conference behind Abington, while also keeping its district playoff hopes alive with one regular season game remaining.
“It was a win.  We look to improve every day and it’s always nice to beat Pennsbury,” CR North coach Jon Levine said.  “They always have quality teams, so it was nice to get a win and secure second spot in the conference outright after having to share it last year.  This year, we don’t have to, so that’s nice to see.”
In what has been a busy two weeks for the Indians, with four games last week and four total games on tap for this week, Levine admits his team is tired, but they certainly came out to play on Tuesday.
The first quarter featured plenty of offense between the two teams, with the Indians leading 3-2 following the opening 12 minutes of play.  CR North led 4-3 at the half before the Falcons were able to tie things up at 5-5 before the final period.
In the fourth, with roughly four minutes to play, Fitzpatrick scored his third goal of the game and the eventual game-winner to help the Indians to the win.
“We’ve been pretty tired, but the kids showed up to play,” Levine said.  “Brian (Fitzpatrick) and Matt (Moller) wanted to win more than anybody else on the field and they took control of the game.”
CR North will celebrate its Senior Night on Friday night when it hosts Abington, which is undefeated in conference play.
In the win, CR North also received assists from Austin Le and Dean Cohen.  Junior goalkeeper Brett McDonald stopped 10 shots to earn the win.
The Indians are unsure of whether or not they will be chosen to play in districts during this weekend’s district seeding meeting, but they’re hoping for the best.
“We just look to compete,” Levine said.  “I can’t tell you what’s going to happen or whether or not we’re going to get in.  Everything is all jumbled up and a mess, but if we keep improving, then maybe we’ll get in.  We’re not going to know for sure until Sunday morning, so we just have to wait and see.”

Abington 14, Council Rock South 8
The Ghosts (9-0) kept their perfect league record intact with Tuesday’s win over the host Golden Hawks. Junior Hunter Jones (five points, two assists) had a seven-point night to lead the Ghosts while junior Cameron Leech added two goals and two assists. Senior Will Dulin (one goal, two assists), junior Joey Lomady (three goals) and senior Brian Gallagher (three goals) each turned in three-point efforts. Junior John Wink chipped in with an assist.

For the Golden Hawks, Kyle Walter had a hat trick, and Colin Patterson added two goals. Jared Gambino, Sam Presley and McGrath each had one goal.
