HATBORO-HORSHAM 9, ABINGTON 6
In a battle of defending SOL conference champions, the Hatters – the defending Continental champs - rallied from a 6-4 second-half deficit to earn the big non-league win over the defending National champs.
“Abington every year is a real good team,” Hatters coach John Kurek said. “They’re always competing for a playoff spot, and we didn’t want to lose a game like this.
“The kids were disappointed with the (Central Bucks) East game getting cancelled the other night, and they played well. Abington has another good team this year, so I’m glad our team pulled it out.”
Kurek was most pleased with his seniors and their resiliency after watching a 3-1 first quarter lead disappear by halftime as the Ghosts rallied to knot the score and then took a two-goal lead early in the second half.
“In the third quarter, one of my senior long poles really twisted his ankle, so he was out a couple of minutes,” Kurek said. “They scored a couple of quick goals, and that’s what gave them the 6-4 lead.
“He came back in, and the seniors really rallied the whole team, tied it back up at 6-6 and said, ‘Hey, we’ve got to finish this thing.’ They just pulled away. I was most pleased the kids didn’t give up, and the seniors really came around and rallied the team.”
Kurek credited captains Jake Cresta, Matt McPoyle and Keith Cameron for providing leadership and then went on to laud the performance of goalie Marc Poust, who recorded 18 saves on 24 shots.
“Marc Poust had an unbelievable game,” the Hatters’ coach said. “He was unbelievable, especially in the second half.
“It was 4-4 at the half, and they scored a couple of quick ones and it was really due to a couple of our guys getting injured, and we were shorthanded. He really closed up the gates and did well.”
The Hatters were led offensively by Connor McPoyle (two goals, three assists), Matt McPoyle (two goals), Brendan Mulligan (two goals) and Logan Eldridge (one goal, one assist). Zach Erwine and Pierre Armstrong also contributed with one goal each.
Cresta, Matt McPoyle, Cameron and Ryan Moore led the Hatters defensively, holding Abington to just two goals in the second half. Cresta and Connor McPoyle led the Hatters with five ground balls each. Matt McPoyle had two ground balls.
Brian Beck dominated on face-offs, giving the Hatters plenty of offensive opportunities.
“The kids needed this one,” Kurek said. “We had a tough one against Garnet Valley last week. We lost 8-7 and the kids were disappointed and just wanted to get back out on the field. When the game was cancelled on Tuesday, it still stuck around, so to get that first win is really big.”
The Hatters (1-1) return to action on Friday when they will face Souderton in their SOL opener.

"Ever been in an elevator and get off at the wrong floor - that's kind of how our game went," coach Duncan Swezey said. "Coming off a big win the night before at North Penn, we came out a bit flat and found ourselves down 4-0 as EA did a great job getting control of the ball off the draws. It was having and controlling the ball in the North Penn game that made the difference.
"In Thursday's game, we found ourselves on the receiving end of that pressure and often found ourselves in high pressure situations when we just needed to execute. EA did a great job of pressuring the ball, and we found ourselves making some mistakes that seemed to cost us. That's part of the game."
In the second half, according to Swezey, the Hatters found themselves playing down two players for almost 20 minutes as the result of yellow cards.
"For anyone who has been in that situation, it is not fun, and all I can do is hope we learn from it," he said. "We were not the best team on the field, but the entire team knows we are better than how we played."
