CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 6, HATBORO-HORSHAM 5
It’s still early in the season, but it’s always something special when perennial SOL Continental Conference powers Hatboro-Horsham and CB East do battle. Monday night’s game was no exception.
The outcome in this one wasn’t decided until East goalie Sean McGovern came up with one last stop as the final horn sounded, preserving the win for the Patriots.
“It’s definitely keeping your cool and knowing we have prepared enough all season long for that kind of moment,” senior defenseman Tyler Butler said of the game’s final dramatic moments. “We all have confidence in Sean back in goal, and we knew he would be able to take any kind of shot they got off.”
The save was number 13 of the night for McGovern, who had four of those stops in the game’s final two minutes..
“Sean played great in goal – he had a ton of great saves,” said Matt Milici, who led the Patriots with two goals and an assist.
There was no mistaking the significance of Tuesday’s win, and as the Patriots walked back to their bench after the postgame handshakes, one of the players said to no one in particular, “There’s nothing better than beating Hatboro.”
And for a Patriot squad that had twice fallen to the Hatters last year – their only losses in SOL play, Tuesday’s hard-fought win was sweet indeed.
“It’s definitely a boost of confidence,” senior Matt Schmidt said. “It’s a big rivalry for us, and to come down here and get a win the first time we play them is definitely a good feeling for the whole team and the coaching staff because we work hard.
“A win like this versus a team like Hatboro that we’ve been neck-in-neck with for a couple of years feels real good.”
This one was a battle from the outset. The Hatters – thanks to a pair of Brendan Mulligan goals - led 2-1 at the end of one period, and they took a 3-2 lead into halftime.
“We just kept throwing the ball right to (goalie Marc Poust’s) stick,” said Milici. “He knew where we were going. We just weren’t moving the ball top shelf at all. That was our fault.”
Third quarter goals by Matt Vetter and Milici (Vetter assist) put the Patriots on top 4-3, but the Hatters had an answer.
Pierre Armstrong (Zach Erwine assist) scored the equalizer with 2:38 remaining in the period, and Nick Paci scored his second goal of the game in the final seconds of the quarter to put the Hatters on top 5-4.
That lead stood until Schmidt connected with 5:58 remaining in regulation to knot the score, and 42 seconds later, Heim scored a goal that turned out to be the game winner, this time using a Milici assist.
“We finally figured out how to play this keeper,” Heim said. “Marc Poust is a great goalie.
“We started shooting a higher percentage (in the second half), and the shots started falling. That’s exactly what we needed. We were getting the defensive stops and the face-offs too. Those are real key parts of the game and helped us take the victory tonight. It’s always great to come to Hatboro and get a win.”
Another key to the win was East’s patience and passing on the offensive end.
“I think the real difference in the first half and the second half was being able for our offense to start clicking and getting all six guys involved,” Heim said. “As soon as we slowed the ball down as a team and started thinking about our shot placement, things started coming together for us.
“That’s something we’ve been practicing a lot this year, getting all six guys involved and settling the ball down before we start attacking the cage. I think that’s really a key to playing successful team offense, especially later in the season when we start playing tougher teams.”
Not to be overlooked were the standout performances of both defensive units. For the Patriots, Jack Bauer was credited with four ground balls and one caused turnover while Will Dempster had three ground balls and one caused turnover. Dustin Buchanan had two ground balls and two caused turnovers, and Heim had three ground balls.
“Defensive-wise, there was definitely a bit of a learning curve this game,” Butler said. “We have a lot of younger guys, especially at defensive middie, and they really learned the game well from the first half and were able to adjust to Horsham’s style of play in the second half and really take it to them.”
The Hatters’ defense was anchored by Jake Cresta, Keith Cameron, Matt McPoyle, Ryan Moore, Jack Morris and Poust. Cameron was credited with four ground balls, and Poust turned away 22 of 28 shots he faced in a standout effort.
“We changed our plan,” East coach Bruce Garcia said of the second half. “We started shooting high, and I think we put in three goals all high on him.
“He’s a very good goalie, they’re a well-coached team. They’re disciplined players all the way around. It was a good event. You wish every lacrosse game was like this – very exciting.”
EXTRA SHOTS; The Hatters were able to kill a three-minute non-releasable penalty for an illegal stick with six minutes to go in the second period, limiting East to just one shot on the man-up…East’s Andrew Del Bracco won 10 of 15 face offs.

COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 17, PENNSBURY 2
The Golden Hawks found themselves staring at a 2-0 deficit early on but rallied to knot the score 2-2 by the end of the period. A 10-0 second quarter tear sent the Hawks into halftime with a commanding 12-2 lead on their way to the big win.
“The difference was we put a few goals together, which was nice,” coach John Hiron said. “We won a lot of balls on the face-offs, and we just converted. We shot the ball well for a change.
“It’s a nice win over Pennsbury who has really had the (advantage) over us for a few years. We had a couple of games early on where we could have done better, so hopefully this sets us up going forward.”

Hiron lauded the play of Justin Cole and Brendan Patterson for controlling the face-offs.
Shane Magrann led the Golden Hawks’ attack with five goals while Mark Tiryh added four. Sam Pressley had a pair of goals.
Austin Devinney was credited with 11 saves in goal for the Golden Hawks.
“He played really well,” Hiron said.

“I told the team that I credit today’s win to our defense. They came up with big stops when we needed it most. Wissahickon has some pretty big offensive threats who presented a challenge today. Our defense had great communication, and our slides were there for help, which I have to give credit to our seniors – Michelle Goodwin and Alexa Schneider – who were true leaders today on ‘D.’”
