Girls
NESHAMINY 1, COUNCIL ROCK SOUTH 0 (2 OT)
Twenty-four hours after clinching sole possession of the SOL National Conference crown with a tightly contested win over Council Rock North, the Redskins found themselves in another battle. This time with Council Rock South.
“Council Rock South played a great game,” Neshaminy coach Rachel Clemens said. “Both teams were out there today with back-to-back games.
“We had a tough matchup against Council Rock North and had to come from behind. Today they played 97 minutes of solid soccer. They just showed a lot of heart and desire to win. They didn’t want to walk away from today with a tie. I felt that showed. They had a lot of energy in the overtime period, and it paid off.”
The Redskins had the better of play in Tuesday’s contest, holding a 17-2 advantage in shots, but it wasn’t until the 92:57 mark that the ‘Skins were finally able to capitalize when Gabby Farrell (Fran Donato assist) scored to bring an end to the marathon contest.
“It was just one of those games where we had the opportunities,” Clemens said. “We just had a hard time finding the back of the net. We continued to knock on the door, and it was just a matter of time. Unfortunately, it took 93 minutes to put it away.”
The game winner was the result of a change in strategy by the Redskins.
“We had talked about switching the point of attack and switching fields, and that’s exactly what happened,” Clemens said. “One of our midfielders on the left side switched the ball over to our right midfielder, and she slotted a ball through to Gabby Farrell, and Gabby was able to finish.
“We switched fields pretty quickly and found Fran, who happened to be wide open. She drew in the defender and then slotted the ball over to Gabby, who put it away.”
The shutout was the 13th of the season for the Redskins, whose defense is anchored by senior keeper McKenna Mullin, senior captain Amy Heller, senior Jess Kelly, junior Nicole Nisivoccia and freshman Maggie Daeshe
“Council Rock South did put some pressure on us,” Clemens said. “They were looking to get an offensive attack, and I just felt my defense really held strong. They’ve held strong all year.
“They played really well. It was an all around fantastic effort.”
For the Redskins, defending a league title they owned was the first order of business this season.
“It was definitely a goal of ours from the beginning of the season to try to be league champs,” Clemens said. “We took care of that.
“I have always been someone who takes each game as it comes. We’re not looking too far ahead. We know we still have to play Pennsbury tomorrow, and then obviously, we’ll start our preparation for playoffs. Our next goal is to make a playoff run.”
The Redskins (16-0, 13-0 SOL) will travel to Neshaminy on Wednesday. The Golden Hawks (10-4-2, 9-2-2), who have clinched second place in the conference standings, will face Concil Rock North at 4 p.m.
