CENTRAL BUCKS EAST 3, ABINGTON 2
In a rematch of last year’s district title game on Monday, the Patriots exacted a degree of revenge, edging the defending district champs in a surprisingly high-scoring contest.
“It was a game that was probably more deserving of a tie,” East coach Mike Gorni said. “Abington was the better team in the first half, and we were probably a little better in the second half.
“Two teams that are usually relentless on the defensive side, and it was 3-2, and it could have been 5-5. It is what it is. It was not particularly pretty but in some ways exciting.”
The Ghosts got on the scoreboard when Juan Castillo connected five minutes into the contest. East’s Brook Weiss connected on the equalizer with 11 minutes remaining in the half when he converted a penalty kick into a goal, sending the teams into halftime deadlocked 1-1.
Midway through the second half, Kurt Howard scored to put the Ghosts on top 2-1.
“In the second half, we actually pushed play, and they got behind us,” Gorni said. “The ball popped out wide, and (Howard) finished it in the box.”
Five minutes later, Ryan Gleason answered with a goal for the Patriots from 25 yards out, scoring the tying goal on a ball served in over the keeper’s head by teammate Evan Vare.
“It was a real good shot,” Gorni said. “The goalkeeper had to come out, the ball rebounded, and he just pushed the ball in behind him.”
With nine minutes remaining, it was Vare connecting for the game winner with an assist from Brian Gilligan.
East keeper Dan Chilson recorded 12 saves in a busy afternoon.
“He played very well,” Gorni said. “He kept us in the game in the first half.”
The Ghosts held a 14-13 advantage in shots on goal.
Abington will travel to Council Rock South for Tuesday’s SOL opener while the Patriots will travel to Hatboro-Horsham.

NESHAMINY 1, CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH 0
In a classic battle between a pair of perennial SOL powers, Neshaminy’s Nick Tucci scored his fourth goal of the year in the 69th minute to break a scoreless tie, using a Kenny Herrmann assist.
“In the first half, both teams felt each other out,” Neshaminy coach Tom Foley said of an uneventful first half. “CB South controlled the midfield most of the half.
“In the second half, we did a better job marking South and had the better of play.”
Foley credited Dan Martin and Jamen Rowan for anchoring a solid defensive effort. Zach Albarran, Bobby Lutz and Hunter Jackson provided a spark off the bench for the Redskins.
Neshaminy will host Truman in Tuesday’s league opener while the Titans will travel to Pennridge.
