SOL District Dual Preview

By Glenn Kaiser

Here is a look at the First Round (5:30 pm) and Second Round (7 pm) match-ups for SOL teams participating in the District Duals on Thursday, Jan. 24.  The Finals will be held at Upper Dublin on Friday, Feb. 1 (starting at 6 pm) and Saturday, Feb. 2 (Final matches 4 pm).

The SOL’s top-seeded team, #6 Pennsbury, has a first round BYE at CB East and will face off against the winner of the #11 Upper Darby vs. #22 Unionville first round match.  Pennsbury has been putting together a solid dual team line-up over the past couple of weeks and are the clear favorite in this bracket to move on and potentially wrestle #3 Downingtown East on Friday night (Feb. 1).  Pennsbury already holds a win over Upper Darby early in the season at the Abington Ghost Town Duals.  #14 Neshaminy will battle #19 Upper Dublin at Wissahickon on Thursday night.  This will be a very evenly contested bout with Upper Dublin having a distinct advantage in the upper weights.  The winner goes against Downigtown East in Round 2.

#20 Pennridge also travels to Wissahickon to wrestle #13 Garnet Valley, with the winner going up against #4 Upper Perkiomen in Round 2.  The match with Pennridge/GV could see Ben Ross (Pennridge) go up and wrestle GV’s tough Michael Marino at 126 pounds.

Council Rock South, seeded #7, also receives a first round BYE and will wrestle the winner of the #10 Methacton/#23 West Chester East match-up.  Rock South will be tested by the favored Methacton squad if the Golden Hawks advance over WCE.  Methacton competes in the rugged PAC 10 and has quietly snuck up into the top ten of District One.  This bracket will be contested at Methacton, giving the Warriors the home gym advantage against the Golden Hawks.

#8 Norristown is the wild card in this District Duals, as they have not faced any high level dual teams thus far in the season.  They have primarily wrestled in some of the nation’s best individual tournaments throughout the season.  They will receive a BYE in round one at West Chester Rustin and will most likely face a fast improving #9 Downingtown West team who defeated Quakertown this past weekend.

#12 Council Rock North travels to Methacton to face #21 Ridley. Ridley is an untested team, thus CRN should advance and face #5 Boyertown, which defeated North in the first weekend of the season.  In the most intriguing match-up of the first round for SOL teams, Central Bucks East, seeded #15, will face #18 Central Bucks South.  East defeated South in week one in a Continental League dual; however, this one will be highly contested bout with both teams looking to rebound from league losses to North Penn and Quakertown respectively.

Tonight’s Continental League match-ups of CBE vs. Quakertown, Pennridge vs Souderton, H-H vs. NP, and CBS vs. CB West should intensify the quest for a league championship for all.  As for the National Conference, CR South will battle Neshaminy with league title hopes still on the line for both teams.  Norristown has all but wrapped up the American title and will wrestle Plymouth-Whitmarsh this evening.  All matches are scheduled for a 7 pm start.
