SOL District FB Preview (Second Round)

Scott Huff previews the second round of the District One Class AAAA playoffs, which will feature five SOL squads.

Ding, ding, ding.

Round Two of the PIAA Quad-A District One Playoffs will be contested Friday night with eight teams continuing the battle for the district title.

Defending champion Coatesville is not in the field after being knocked out by North Penn last week.  Don’t look for any other Ches-Mont League teams either as Downingtown West, Unionville, and West Chester Rustin were all rudely jettisoned from the tournament.  Don’t look for any Suburban One League American Conference teams either as both Plymouth Whitemarsh and Upper Dublin were shown the exit door.  Goodbye to Upper Darby from the Central League as well.

There are those that would argue that the district title game might well be played this week when Pennsbury (10-1) hosts North Penn (8-3) in what most feel is the marquee game of the night.  The remaining games, though, are also very fascinating as Abington (9-2) travels to Delaware County to play #1 seed and unbeaten Garnet Valley (11-0);  Neshaminy (9-2) will attempt to defend its home turf against PAC-10 power Spring-Ford (9-2); and Central Bucks West (9-2) will also attempt to defend its home turf against PAC-10 power Perkiomen Valley (9-2).

And the beat goes on…

PIAA QUAD-A DISTRICT ONE
QUARTERFINAL GAMES
FRIDAY – NOVEMBER 15, 2013

[#11] North Penn Knights (8-3) @  [#3] Pennsbury Falcons (10-1)
Falcon Field – 7 pm
Winner Gets the Winner of [#15] Perkiomen Valley (9-2) @ [#7] Central Bucks West (9-2)

North Penn Head Coach Dick Beck says:  “Pennsbury is an excellent football team that plays tough.  They run the ball a lot and have four good running backs, but the quarterback can also hurt you throwing the ball.  It isn’t all about stopping the run with them.  The pressure to win this game is really on Pennsbury.  Pennsbury is the team that everyone seems to be talking about, and we are going to have to go to their place to play them.  We hope to come away with the big upset.”
Pennsbury Head Coach Galen Snyder says:  “Any time you can go on the road and beat the defending district champion 31-0 you have to be impressed with what they did – especially defensively.  North Penn can run the ball (Nyfease West and Luke Berry) behind a good offensive line, but they have also shown the play action pass with the quarterback (Austin Shearer).  And they hurt Coatesville with a trick play.  North Penn has a great tradition and excellent coaching.  We are looking forward to the challenge.”

Heartbreak Ridge – 7 pm

Winner Gets the Winner of [#8] Abington (9-2) @ [#1] Garnet Valley (11-0)

Neshaminy Head Coach Mark Schmidt says:  “The PAC-10 made quite a statement last week with how great Spring-Ford and Perk Valley both played last week against the Ches-Mont teams.  They both kicked some butt, and we have to make sure that doesn’t happen to us this week.  We got off to a slow start last week offensively, and we won’t be able to afford that this week.  Spring-Ford has a stud at tailback (Jarred Jones), but they run multiple stuff on both offense and defense.  We have to be settled down from the beginning of the game this week, and we have to manage the game better if we want to win the game.”

Abington Head Coach Tim Sorber says:  “Great Valley has an excellent quarterback (Christian Portale) that can hurt you with both the run and the pass.  One of their best running backs (Jake Irving) missed the Council Rock North game with an injury and may or may not be back against us.  Another good running back (Vincent Razzano) got hurt at the end of the Council Rock North game and may or may not be back against us.  Both could be back – both could be missing.  We have to prepare for any possibility.  (Council Rock North head coach) Adam Collachi has been very helpful in getting us ready for this game.  We have a great relationship playing in the same (SOL National) conference.  We have to do what we do best and try and make the good plays.”

Central Bucks Head Coach Brian Hensel says:  “(Perk Valley quarterback) Rasaan Stewart is a tremendous player, but he also has an excellent supporting cast.  He has generated a lot of offense, but he is not the only weapon on that football team.  Perkiomen Valley has been one of the toughest teams to score on all year (6.4 points allowed) in the state, and we are going to have a tall task to try and put points on the board.  The players are excited – the game can’t come soon enough for the coaches or the players.”
