SOL District One FB Preview (Opening Round)

Scott Huff previews this week’s District One Tournament opening round games featuring SOL schools.

By Scott Huff

Ding, ding, ding.

The bell will be rung Friday night at 7 pm and the First Round of the PIAA Quad-A District One Playoffs will commence as the 16-team field will begin to slug it out for the title.  And after the night is over, only eight teams will be left standing for Round Two.

Coatesville is the defending champion, but the Red Raiders are going to be hard pressed to repeat as Penn State recruit DaQuan Worley is out with a torn ACL.  North Penn is the first round opponent for host Coatesville and is riding a 7-game win streak.  The Red Raiders, though, have a roster of superior athletes and will surely not roll over for the surging Knights.

Pennsbury, Neshaminy, Abington, and Central Bucks West will all host first round games, while Upper Dublin, Plymouth Whitemarsh, and Council Rock North each will begin its District One playoff journey on the road.

Let the games begin...

Upper Dublin Head Coach Bret Stover says:  “It’s funny, but (Abington head coach) Tim (Sorber) and I have talked about playing a week 11 game if we both didn’t make the playoffs.  And now we are playing each other in the playoffs.  We have always played in the summer leagues with Abington, and we know them a little.  Playing at Abington is always fun – the stadium has that small college atmosphere.  (Senior running back) Craig Reynolds is an exceptional athlete, and we are going to have our hands full trying to contain him.  Our schools border each other, and it should be a great night for the players and fans.”
Abington Head Coach Tim Sorber says:  “Playing Upper Dublin is bringing back that old Suburban One League rivalry when we used to play them every year – a trip back to the good old days.  We have a rivalry with them on the basketball court, and it will be nice to play them in football this year.  Beside Cheltenham, we don’t play the schools that border us geographically, and that alone creates excitement.  Upper Dublin has a nice quarterback in (John) Derr who can hurt you with the run and the pass, and two good running backs (John and Kylief Lee).  It should be a good football game.”

Council Rock North Head Coach Adam Collachi says:  “Garnet Valley is a team that 120 kids on the team, and nobody plays both ways for them.  They have four kids that can run the football, and they can also hurt you with the pass.  They are explosive on the offensive side of the ball, and very strong defensively.  We played in a quality conference, and even though we lost to Pennsbury, Neshaminy, and Abington, we feel that we are prepared to play a team like Garnet Valley in the playoffs.  We invite this challenge.”

Plymouth Whitemarh Head Coach Dan Chang says:  “Central Bucks West has a real game breaker in Marvin Todd, and in quarterback John Fitz, they have a player that can hurt you with his arm and legs.  They will present a real challenge to us defensively.  West is very physical on defense and will also present a challenge to our offense.  West isn’t all that far from home, and we expect a good crowd to follow us.  People in school are excited about the game – and so are our players.”
Central Bucks West Head Coach Brian Hensel says:  “Plymouth Whitemarsh is absolutely massive up front, and they have three weapons in the backfield in the two good running backs (Jose Mora-Vega and Brian Afflick) and quarterback (Connor Hanlon).  That Hanlon is a magician with the ball, and the running backs have both power and speed.  We will have our work cut out for us defensively.  And Vega is a stud on defense at linebacker – we haven’t seen any better than him this year.  It should be a physical game that could come down to the last possession.”

Neshaminy Head Coach Mark Schmidt says:  “The loss last week to Pennsbury was hard, but when all the computation was done for districts, we were still a #4 seed with a home game in the first round and, if we win, a home game in the second round.  We play well on our field (Heartbreak Ridge) and our seniors are excited about playing a meaningful game before our home fans.  Unionville is a very versatile team that has a great offensive line that allows them to run the ball, and they protect the quarterback well.  You only play good teams in districts.”
