SOL District Softball Preview (Final)

North Penn will do battle with Avon Grove in Thursday’s District One AAAA title game at Great Valley (3:30 p.m.).

The North Penn Maidens have gone full circle.

In the The Philadelphia Inquirer’s preseason poll ranking the top teams from Southeastern Pennsylvania, the Maidens were ranked number one, but a season of great expectations didn’t exactly go as planned for a squad that returned the nucleus of last year’s state semifinalist team.

They lost their first game of the season to Downingtown West 19-14 in a game they led 11-3. The Maidens suffered a similar fate in a 5-3 loss to Central Bucks South in their league opener that saw the Titans stage a late rally for the come-from-behind win. They rebounded to defeat archrival Souderton (10-4) and Quakertown (8-2) but then stumbled in an 8-3 loss to Central Bucks East.

North Penn was 6-3 after an 8-4 win over Archbishop Wood on April 23 but fell to 6-6 after dropping three straight games to Souderton (9-3), Bensalem (8-2) and Central Bucks South (2-0).

A whole lot has changed since that April 28 loss to South. The Maidens have reeled off 11 straight wins. In that span, they have allowed just 17 runs, holding teams to two runs or less in nine of those games and one or less in six.

Impressive numbers for a squad that is one win away from capturing its second district title in three years, and perhaps just one person is standing in the way of the Maidens’ quest for a district crown.

Maggie Balint.

Avon Grove’s sophomore star is the talk of the district and deservedly so. It’s been a long, long time since a pitcher so dominant has hit the scene. In three district playoff wins, Balint has allowed just one earned run. In those 22 innings, she has given up a total of nine hits while striking out 38 and walking five.

Those dazzling numbers have sent three SOL teams – Central Bucks South (1-0, 8 innings), Neshaminy (2-1) and Souderton (3-1) – home on the short end of the score. Balint, who has made a verbal commitment to Delaware, has been a one-woman wrecking crew for the Red Devils. She’s led her team to wins in three games that saw the Red Devils hit just .159 (11-for-68). Balint has accounted for two of those 11 hits. Teammate Alyssa Herion is the team’s hottest hitter with three hits in eight at-bats. Courtney Gall and Logan Needham each have two hits.

On Thursday, the sophomore sensation will be confronted with a North Penn squad that has talent at every position and has moved back to number four in the most recent Inquirer rankings. Avon Grove is ranked second.

Who will prevail?

It promises to be a most interesting battle.
