SOL District Softball Preview (Second Round)

Seven SOL teams will be in action in Wednesday’s second round of the District One AAAA Tournament on Wednesday. Check back for a complete recap.

#16 DOWNINGTOWN EAST at #1 NESHAMINY

Neshaminy

  • 18-2 overall
  • 13-1 SOL National Conference champion
  • Freshman pitcher Amber Brugger (14-2) is surrounded by a veteran cast that can get it done in the field and at the plate.
  • Regular season wins over #15 Souderton (11-5), #9 Council Rock North (7-0, 6-0), #12 Abington (9-3, 9-4), #13 Pennsbury (14-1, 10-3) and #23 William Tennent (14-4, 11-6)
  • Only regular season losses came at the hands of Council Rock South (2-1) and New Jersey powerhouse Notre Dame (5-1).

How they got here:  First round bye.

Downingtown East

  • 13-8 overall
  • 11-8 Ches-Mont National Division fourth place
  • Led by junior pitcher Paige Warfel, a University of Delaware commit
  • Regular season win over #17 Spring-Ford (6-3)
  • Split regular season series with #7 West Chester East (dropping the first 6-4 but winning the second 12-10) and #11 Downingtown West (winning the first 2-1 and dropping the second by an identical score).

How they got here:  In Monday’s opening round, Downingtown East defeated 17th-seeded Spring-Ford 6-3. Paige Warfel, who earned the win in the circle, was 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Cougars.

#14 WEST CHESTER RUSTIN at #3 NORTH PENN
North Penn

  • 18-2 overall
  • 12-2 SOL Continental Conference champions
  • Led by senior Jackie Bilotti, a four-year starter, who excels in both the circle and at the plate.
  • Regular season wins over #9 Council Rock North (2-0), #18 Hatboro-Horsham (3-1, 1-0), and #20 Great Valley (7-1)
  • Defeated District 11 powerhouse Parkland 2-1.
  • Split regular season series with #5 Souderton (losing the first 2-1 and winning the second 9-2) as well as #8 Central Bucks South (falling in the initial meeting 5-3 and winning the second 11-4).
  • Closed out regular season with 11 straight win.

How they got here:  First round bye.

West Chester Rustin

  • 13-6 Ches-Mont American Division co-champions with Great Valley
  • Led by the dangerous one-two punch of junior catcher Anna Steinmetz, a University of Delaware commit who is a two-time all-state selection, and sophomore pitcher Caela Abadie, who – as a freshman – hit .538 with 12 home runs, 10 doubles and 50 RBIs.
  • Regular season wins over #11 Downingtown West (7-6), #15 Ridley (10-2) and #16 Downingtown East (6-5).
  • Split regular season series with Great Valley (losing the first 4-3 and winning the second 1-0).
  • Dropped two of three games to close regular season.

How they got here:  Rustin needed nine innings to defeat 19th-seeded Conestoga 4-3. Lindsey Mitchell delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to knot the score 3-3. Rustin won it in the bottom of the ninth when Lexi Wright delivered a sacrifice fly to plate the game winner. Caela Abadie allowed four hits in a winning effort in the circle. She also helped her own cause with a home run.

#12 ABINGTON at #5 SOUDERTON

Souderton

  • 14-4 overall
  • 11-3 SOL Continental Conference second place
  • Entered the final week of the season with a one-game lead over second place North Penn but fell to the Maidens and Central Bucks East to finish second.
  • Regular season wins over #8 Central Bucks South (12-2, 4-0), #9 Council Rock North (6-2), #18 Hatboro-Horsham (5-3, 4-1)
  • Split regular season series with North Penn (winning the first 2-1 and falling in the second 9-2).

How they got here:  First round bye.

Abington

  • 15-6 overall
  • 9-5 SOL National Conference third place
  • Pair of regular season wins over #13 Pennsbury (4-3, 8-6)
  • Split season series with #9 Council Rock North (losing first 12-2 and winning second 3-0) and #23 William Tennent (winning initial meeting 10-0 and dropping second 10-8).

How they got here:  The Ghosts rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to defeat 21st-seeded Coatesville 4-2. Nicolette Ray tossed a five-hitter to earn the win in the circle. Sophomore Megan Burziak delivered a two-run single to knot the score, and Maddie Malfara’s two-run single gave the Ghosts the lead. Malfara and Jamie Gosselin both had a pair of hits to lead the Ghosts.

#9 OWEN J ROBERTS at #8 CENTRAL BUCKS SOUTH
Central Bucks South

  • 15-5 overall
  • 10-4 SOL Continental Conference third place
  • Won eight in a row to close out regular season after dropping four of five games after losing senior standout Maddie Decker, a University of Maine recruit, for the season to a torn ACL.
  • Regular season win over #12 Abington (10-2)
  • Split season series with #3 North Penn (winning the first 5-3 and losing the second 11-4) and also 20th-seeded Hatboro-Horsham (winning the first 7-3 and falling in the second 8-4).

How they got here:  First round bye

Owen J. Roberts

  • 17-4 overall
  • 15-3 PAC-10 second to Perkiomen Valley
  • Pair of regular season wins over #17 Spring-Ford (10-7, 7-4)
  • Fell to Spring-Ford in PAC-10 opening round 6-5
  • Averaged a league best 8.6 runs during the regular season while allowing 3.8.

#20 HATBORO-HORSHAM at #2 PERKIOMEN VALLEY
Hatboro-Horsham

  • 13-8 overall
  • 7-7 SOL Continental Conference tied for fourth place
  • Won eight of nine to close out regular season
  • Split regular season series with #8 Central Bucks South (losing the first 7-3 but winning the second 8-4).

How they got here:  In the Hatters’ 3-0 opening round win over #15 Ridley, senior Lexie Campbell tossed a complete game three-hit shutout. Junior Dee Moyer had a huge day at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.

Perkiomen Valley

  • 19-0 overall
  • 18-0 PAC-10 champions
  • Defeated Spring-Ford 7-0 to capture the PAC-10 Tournament title.
  • Led by pitcher Emily Oltman, who has surpassed the 300-strikeout mark for her career.
  • Vikings allowed a league best 2.1 runs a game during the regular season while scoring 8.5
  • Regular season wins over #9 Owen J Roberts (12-10, 2-0) and #17 Spring-Ford (7-0, 12-1, 4-1)
  • Lost to Hatboro-Horsham 16-12 in last year’s opening round of the district tournament.

#23 WILLIAM TENNENT at #7 WEST CHESTER EAST

William Tennent

  • 9-11 overall
  • 5-9 SOL National Conference tied for fifth place
  • Closed out regular season with four-game winning streak over #12 Abington (10-8), Bensalem (12-1), Council Rock South (9-4) and #13 Pennsbury (15-4)
  • Scored 46 runs in last four regular season wins combined.

How they got here:  In Monday’s opening round, the Panthers avenged a pair of regular season losses to ninth-seeded Council Rock North with a 4-0 win. Kalisi Taufalele tossed the complete game shutout while the Panthers – who managed just one hit through five innings – scored one run in the sixth (unearned) and three more in the seventh. Sara Keeny (2-for-2), Jackie Heim (1-for-3 RBI), Jocelyn Flores (2-for-3 RBI), Nikki Reh (1-for-4, RBI) and Kate Clark (RBI) all contributed to the attack.

West Chester East

  • 16-4 overall
  • 15-4 Ches-Mont National Conference second place behind Avon Grove
  • Boast a pair of wins over defending district champion Avon Gove (4-2, 2-0)
  • Led by senior pitcher Olivia Rogers (2.13 ERA, 131.2 IP, 111 hits, 49 BB, 115 K). She also carries a big bat and has hit four doubles, two triples and four home runs. Rogers boasts a .435 batting average with a team high 24 RBIs.
  • Junior Leah Ritchey is hitting .477 with a team high 25 runs scored and 16 stolen bases.
