Michael Thomas made a statement.

He is going to be a contender at the PIAA Class AAA swim championships this season.

The Hatboro-Horsham junior had a standout performance at the 2013 Cardinal Classic, held at Upper Dublin on Saturday.

He won the 200-yard individual medley in a pool record time of 1:54.26, lowering the previous mark of 1:54.95 by Michael Jansen of Upper Dublin set on Feb. 1, 2013.

“I was really surprised by my time,” he said. “I had morning practice and I lifted, so I didn’t expect to swim that fast.

“I like swimming good competition and swimming people I don’t see all the time because that’s a good way for me to see where I am. I like talking to them and it’s nice to sort of look ahead at what I might be up against at states.

“I’m not thinking ahead too much right now but it’s nice to get in a meet like this. There’s a lot of good people in it and it’s a good mix of different teams.”

He also finished first in the 100 backstroke (49.66), touching out Hershey’s Austin Doss in one of the most interesting races of the day (50.03).

Thomas led off the 200 medley relay for Jeremy Brosius, Curtis Sumner and Tom Fisher, which finished third (1:40.53).

He also anchored the third place 400 freestyle relay for Sean Claggert, Sumner and Tim Reilly (3:20.15).

Christopher Devlin of Upper Dublin won the 200 freestyle (1:42.80) and took third in the 100 freestyle (48.77). Kevin Toner won diving for the Cardinals.

The host Cardinals were second in the 400 freestyle relay with Scott Luttmann, Devlin, Cooper Tollen and Michael Jensen clocking in at3:19.10.

Upper Dublin’s Jensen, Devlin, Stephen Williamson and Tollen took third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:29.48).

Brandon McCredie of Council Rock North won the 50 freestyle (21.20) and placed second in the 100 butterfly (51.92).

“I came in here with a positive attitude,” McCredie said. “I thought about the practices we had and everything we put into it. When it came time for the race I just blanked out and just swam and did what I had to do.

“My time was exactly what I visualized it would be so I’m very happy.

“Having teams like Hershey and State College here this year was a real positive. It shows you the kind of competition that’s out there, so it’s a benefit for me to see who I might go up against at states.

“Going into the break I’m just ecstatic. My times are better than they were last year so I’m ready to work hard over the break and go into the rest of the season.”

Teammate Jake Goroshko took third in both the 50 freestyle (22.16) and 100 backstroke (54.27).

McCredie anchored the 200 medley relay for Goroshko, Jack Donnelly and Joe Lynch, which finished second (1:40.09).

Goroshko, Allen Shmurak, Ryan Mitchell and McCredie also took second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:28.21).
